Chapter 9: The Last Voyage
The words stayed in the air.
Who paid the doctor.
I looked at Daniel.
“No.””
He didn’t answer.
That was answer enough.
“Daniel.””
His face broke.
“I was going to tell you.””
“When?””
His silence hurt.
“After everything was over?””
“Yes.””
I laughed.
A quiet, painful laugh.
“Of course.””
Marcus watched us like we were a show.
“You see, Evelyn?””
He stepped closer.
“Your husband has always believed secrets are the same as protection.””
Daniel glared.
“You don’t know anything about me.””
“I know everything.””
Marcus looked at the documents.
“I know about the accounts.””
He looked at Judith.
“I know about your anger.””
Then at Vanessa.
“I know about your fear.””
Finally, me.
“And I know about your loyalty.””
I hated that he sounded like he was studying us.
“You manipulated everyone.””
Marcus smiled.
“No.””
He pointed at Daniel.
“He did.””
Daniel moved forward.
“Enough.””
“No.””
Marcus laughed.
“You want to be the hero?””
He looked at me.
“Ask him why the surgery was delayed.””
My heart stopped.
“Daniel?””
Daniel swallowed.
“I found out the doctor was connected to Marcus.””
Marcus smiled.
“And?””
Daniel looked away.
“I investigated.””
“What happened?””
Daniel whispered:
“The night before my surgery, someone entered my hospital room.””
I covered my mouth.
“What?””
“He told me if I exposed Marcus, my family would suffer.””
Phillip stepped forward.
“So Dad faked his death?””
Daniel nodded.
“I had no choice.””
Marcus laughed.
“No choice?””
His voice became cruel.
“You had choices.””
Daniel looked at him.
“You threatened my family.””
“And you still lost.””
The room went silent.
Because Marcus was right about one thing.
Everyone had suffered.
I looked at Daniel.
“All this time…”
My voice shook.
“You knew someone wanted you dead.””
“Yes.””
“And you let me think I lost you.””
“Yes.””
I wiped my eyes.
The anger returned.
Not because he survived.
Because he chose the pain I carried.
Then Daniel said something that stopped me.
“I didn’t know if I would come back.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
He stepped closer.
“The plan failed.””
Marcus looked away.
Daniel continued.
“The surgery almost killed me.””
My breath caught.
“I was unconscious for days.””
He looked at me.
“I heard your voice.””
Tears filled his eyes.
“You were talking to me.””
I froze.
“I told you to come home.””
“I know.””
“How?””
Daniel smiled sadly.
“Because I was there.””
The room went quiet.
“I heard you.””
For a moment, all the anger disappeared.
Because love is cruel.
Even after betrayal.
Even after pain.
It still exists.
Then Marcus moved.
Fast.
He grabbed the folder.
Sam reacted immediately.
But Marcus pulled out a small device.
Everyone stopped.
“What is that?””
Marcus smiled.
“The end.””
Daniel’s face changed.
“No.””
“What?””
Daniel looked at the device.
“He’s going to destroy the evidence.””
Marcus laughed.
“Exactly.””
He pressed the button.
Nothing happened.
He looked confused.
Pressed again.
Still nothing.
Daniel smiled.
“You really thought I would leave the real evidence where you could find it?””
Marcus’s expression changed.
“You switched it.””
Daniel nodded.
Sam smiled.
“Captain always had a backup plan.””
Marcus stepped backward.
And then sirens sounded in the distance.
Police lights flashed across the water.
Judith looked at Marcus.
“You said nobody knew.””
Marcus turned.
And for the first time…
He looked afraid.
I watched as officers boarded the Second Wind.
Marcus was taken away.
Judith stood silently.
Not fighting.
Not running.
Just tired.
Before she was escorted away, she looked at me.
“I really did hate you.””
I nodded.
“I know.””
She looked down.
“But I never expected to envy you this much.””
Then she left.
The boat became quiet.
The memorial was ruined.
The tea set was broken.
But the truth was finally standing in the open.
Daniel came beside me.
“I’m sorry.””
I looked at him.
“I don’t know if sorry is enough.””
“I know.””
A pause.
“But I love you.””
The words hurt.
Because I loved him too.
I touched his face.
“Then spend the rest of your life proving you deserve it.””
Daniel nodded.
“I will.””
Behind us, the ocean moved gently.
Like it was finally letting us breathe.
But one thing remained.
The tea set.
The broken pieces.
And Daniel’s final surprise.
Because when Sam gathered the porcelain shards…
He found something hidden inside the base of the teapot.
A message.
Written by Ruth.
May you like
Decades earlier.
And it had my name on it.
