Chapter 5: The Truth Beneath the Ashes
Nobody moved.
The ocean outside kept moving.
The boat kept rocking.
But inside the wheelhouse, everything stopped.
I looked at Vanessa.
The woman who had shattered Ruth’s tea set.
The woman I had held responsible for every ounce of pain I felt tonight.
“You expect me to believe that?””
Her eyes lowered.
“No.””
That surprised me.
She didn’t defend herself.
She didn’t cry.
She simply accepted my hatred.
“I deserve that.””
Phillip stepped forward.
“Vanessa, what are you saying?””
She looked at him.
Pain crossed her face.
“I should have told you everything.””
“Everything like what?””
She swallowed.
“Like the fact that Daniel knew my real name.””
Phillip stared.
“What?””
Vanessa reached into her purse.
She pulled out an envelope.
And handed it to me.
Inside was a letter.
Daniel’s handwriting.
Again.
My hands shook as I opened it.
Evelyn,
If Vanessa gives you this, it means things have gone worse than I expected.
I looked up.
Vanessa closed her eyes.
Daniel continued.
Do not judge her by what she was forced to become.
Judge her by what she chooses to do now.
My heart pounded.
“What does that mean?””
Vanessa whispered:
“My father was involved with Daniel’s company years ago.””
Sam looked shocked.
“Your father?””
She nodded.
“He stole from Daniel.””
Phillip frowned.
“But you said your father was dead.””
“He is.””
A pause.
“But before he died, he left behind people who wanted what Daniel had.””
She looked at the documents.
“They threatened me. They forced me to get close to your family.””
I stared at her.
“You married Phillip because they told you to?””
“Yes.””
Phillip looked like someone had punched him.
“But…”
Vanessa’s voice broke.
“But then I actually loved him.””
Silence.
“I tried to leave,” she continued.
“They threatened Daniel.””
My fingers tightened around the letter.
“What happened?””
She looked at the floor.
“Daniel found out everything.””
“And?””
“He made a plan.””
Sam stepped closer.
“What plan?””
Vanessa looked toward the ocean.
“The plan that required everyone to believe he was vulnerable.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“What are you saying?””
Before she answered, the wheelhouse radio crackled.
Everyone turned.
Static.
Then a voice.
A voice I knew better than my own.
A voice I had dreamed of hearing.
“Evelyn?””
The world disappeared.
My hand flew to my mouth.
No.
It couldn’t be.
The radio crackled again.
“Evelyn, if you’re hearing this…”
A pause.
Then:
“I’m sorry I had to let you believe I was gone.””
My knees nearly gave out.
Phillip grabbed the table.
Sam closed his eyes.
Vanessa whispered:
“He’s alive.””
The radio hissed.
Then Daniel’s voice returned.
“But there’s something you need to know.””
The entire boat went silent.
“Vanessa didn’t break the tea set.””
I looked at the shattered porcelain outside.
“What?””
Daniel’s voice trembled.
“The person who wanted you angry…”
A pause.
A sound like someone moving closer to the microphone.
“…was the person standing beside you all along.””
May you like
The radio cut off.
And behind us, the wheelhouse door slowly opened.
