Chapter 3: The Son I Lost
I stared at Phillip.
The words didn’t make sense.
“What do you mean she wasn’t supposed to?””
He looked away.
That was the answer before he ever spoke.
“Phillip.””
His shoulders dropped.
“Mom, please.””
“No.””
My voice surprised even me.
“Not please. Not now.””
The ocean crashed against the side of the boat.
A slow, heavy rhythm.
Like a warning.
Phillip stepped inside.
“She was angry.””
“Angry?””
I laughed once.
It wasn’t a happy sound.
“She destroyed something that belonged to your grandmother.””
“I know.””
“You know?””
His silence hurt worse than shouting.
I walked toward him.
“You knew about the tea set?””
“Yes.””
“And you let her do it?””
His eyes filled.
“I didn’t know she would actually do it.””
I felt something inside me crack.
Not the tea set.
Something worse.
My trust.
“Why?””
Phillip rubbed his face.
“Because she said you were going to cut us out.””
I froze.
“What?””
“She thought Dad changed his will.””
The cabin became too small.
“Daniel was dead.””
“I know.””
“Then why would she care about his will?””
Phillip didn’t answer.
He didn’t need to.
The truth was standing between us.
Outside, someone shouted.
A glass broke.
The memorial continued without us.
But inside that wheelhouse, my marriage, my family, my entire life shifted.
“Did you know she was after money?””
Phillip looked ashamed.
“No.””
I waited.
He looked down.
“Not at first.””
The sentence landed like a stone.
“Phillip.””
“I thought she loved me.””
My anger softened for half a second.
Because he looked like a child.
Like Daniel’s little boy.
Then I remembered the tea set.
The cruelty.
The smile.
“Your father knew.””
Phillip looked up.
“What?””
“Your father knew something.””
I showed him the notebook.
His face changed.
“Where did you get this?””
“From the safe.””
His expression turned pale.
“Mom…”
“What?””
He stepped back.
“Vanessa told me that safe was empty.””
My blood ran cold.
“When?””
“Yesterday.””
I stared at him.
Yesterday.
Daniel’s safe.
The one only he and Sam knew about.
“How would she know?””
Neither of us spoke.
Then my phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
A woman’s voice whispered.
“Evelyn?””
My hand tightened around the phone.
“Who is this?””
A pause.
Then:
“Someone who knew Daniel was trying to protect you.””
The line went silent.
“Hello?””
Nothing.
Then a message appeared.
One photograph.
My breath stopped.
It was Daniel.
Alive.
Standing outside a hospital.
May you like
And next to him…
Was Vanessa.
