Chapter 8: Daniel’s Secret

Nobody spoke.

The folder sat between us like a loaded weapon.

I looked at Daniel.

“Open it.””

He didn’t move.

“Daniel.””

His eyes closed.

For a moment, he wasn’t a captain.

He wasn’t the man who survived storms.

He was just my husband.

A man who had hidden something.

Again.

Judith watched him.

“You never told her, did you?””

My heart sank.

“Told me what?””

Daniel reached for the folder.

“Evelyn…”

“No.””

My voice was calm.

Too calm.

“Not another secret.””

He opened it.

Inside were old documents.

Newspaper clippings.

A photograph.

A young man.

Judith’s father.

And beside him…

Daniel.

“You knew him,” I whispered.

Daniel nodded.

“Years ago.””

Judith laughed.

“Tell her the rest.””

Daniel looked at me.

“Her father worked with me.””

“Worked?””

“He was my business partner.””

I stared.

“Why didn’t I know?””

“Because it ended badly.””

Judith stepped forward.

“Because he destroyed everything.””

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

“That’s not what happened.””

“No?””

Judith’s voice rose.

“You ruined him.””

Daniel looked at her.

“I stopped him from ruining other people.””

I looked between them.

“What did he do?””

Silence.

Then Daniel answered.

“He was stealing from investors.””

Judith shook her head.

“You always tell yourself you’re the hero.””

“No.””

Daniel’s voice was firm.

“I’m telling the truth.””

Judith laughed.

“Your truth.””

She looked at me.

“Your husband exposed my father.””

I felt the weight of her words.

“And?””

“And my father lost everything.””

Daniel lowered his eyes.

“He made choices.””

Judith’s face hardened.

“And my family paid for them.””

A strange sadness moved through me.

Because suddenly I understood.

Judith wasn’t a monster born from nothing.

She was a person who had let pain become poison.

But poison was still poison.

“You could have come to me,” I said.

She looked at me.

“Would you have listened?””

I didn’t answer.

Because I didn’t know.

Maybe years ago, I wouldn’t have.

Maybe I would have defended Daniel.

Maybe that was part of the tragedy.

Judith saw my hesitation.

“Exactly.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“But revenge wasn’t justice.””

Judith smiled.

“No.””

She looked around.

“Revenge was the only thing I had left.””

Then the lights went out.

The entire boat dropped into darkness.

Someone screamed outside.

The emergency lights flickered red.

Daniel immediately moved.

“Everyone stay where you are.””

A sound came from the deck.

Footsteps.

Fast.

Running.

Sam grabbed a flashlight.

“Someone’s aboard.””

Daniel looked at Judith.

“You weren’t alone.””

She smiled.

And that terrified me.

“No.””

The red emergency light illuminated her face.

“I wasn’t.””

A man appeared at the wheelhouse entrance.

Tall.

Dark jacket.

Unknown.

Phillip stepped back.

“Who is that?””

Judith didn’t answer.

The man did.

“My name is Marcus Vale.””

Daniel’s face changed.

Not surprise.

Recognition.

Fear.

“You.””

The man smiled.

“Hello, Daniel.””

I looked at my husband.

“Who is he?””

Daniel’s voice was barely above a whisper.

“The person who started this.””

Marcus walked inside.

“After all these years, you still blame everyone else.””

Sam moved forward.

“You stay away from her.””

Marcus laughed.

“Still playing the loyal soldier?””

Daniel stepped between us.

“Why are you here?””

Marcus looked at me.

“Because Evelyn deserves the truth.””

I felt cold.

“What truth?””

Marcus smiled.

“The truth that Daniel’s death wasn’t fake.””

Everyone froze.

Daniel looked at him.

“What?””

Marcus continued.

“Your husband was supposed to die.””

Silence.

“What are you talking about?””

Marcus looked at Daniel.

“You weren’t supposed to survive the surgery.””

Daniel’s face changed.

And suddenly, I knew.

There was another secret.

A bigger one.

Marcus leaned closer.

“Tell her, Daniel.””

My husband said nothing.

May you like

Marcus smiled.

“Tell her who paid the doctor.””
