Chapter 4: The Woman Daniel Feared

I stared at the photograph until my eyes burned.

Daniel.

Alive.

Impossible.

My husband had been gone for eleven days.

I had watched the doctors lower their voices.

I had held his hand when his heartbeat disappeared.

I had kissed his forehead after they told me he was gone.

So why was he standing in a photograph?

“Mom?””

Phillip’s voice sounded far away.

I handed him the phone.

His face drained.

“That’s Dad.””

“Yes.””

“When was this taken?””

I checked the message.

No date.

Only one sentence.

YOU DON’T KNOW THE WHOLE STORY.

Sam entered the wheelhouse.

One look at our faces told him everything.

“What happened?””

I showed him the phone.

Sam went completely still.

For a man who had survived storms, fires, and sinking ships, that scared me more than anything.

“You know something,” I said.

He didn’t answer.

“Sam.””

Finally, he whispered:

“Daniel wasn’t sick.””

The room went silent.

“What?””

“He was investigating.””

“Investigating what?””

Sam looked at Phillip.

Then me.

“Vanessa.””

Phillip shook his head.

“No.””

Sam’s jaw tightened.

“Your father discovered she wasn’t who she claimed to be.””

I felt dizzy.

“Who is she?””

Sam opened the wooden box again.

This time, he removed a file hidden underneath the false bottom.

Daniel had hidden it.

Inside were copies of records.

Birth certificates.

Court documents.

A photograph.

A younger Vanessa.

But beside her was another name.

Not Vanessa Whitmore.

Another name.

A name I had never seen.

“Daniel found out she changed identities,” Sam said.

Phillip grabbed the paper.

“This is impossible.””

“No,” I said quietly.

“It’s not.””

Because suddenly everything made sense.

The perfect smile.

The careful words.

The way she watched every conversation.

“She married you for access,” Sam said.

Phillip looked sick.

“No.””

“She needed Daniel’s business records. His accounts. His connections.””

I flipped through the documents.

Then I saw it.

A bank transfer.

A large one.

Sent three days before Daniel died.

Recipient:

Vanessa.

My hands shook.

“Daniel knew.””

Sam nodded.

“He knew she was planning something.””

“Then why didn’t he tell me?””

Sam looked heartbroken.

“Because she threatened someone.””

I looked up.

“Who?””

Sam didn’t answer.

The wheelhouse door suddenly opened.

Everyone turned.

Vanessa stood there.

Her hair was still damp.

Her makeup was cleaned off.

For the first time since I met her, she looked real.

And terrified.

“Because she threatened me.””

Sam stepped forward.

“Get out.””

But Vanessa looked at me.

Not Phillip.

Me.

“Evelyn, you have to listen.””

I almost laughed.

“You destroyed my husband’s memorial.””

“I know.””

“You lied to my son.””

“I know.””

“You used my family.””

Her eyes filled.

May you like

Then she said the one thing I never expected.

“I was trying to save Daniel.””
