Chapter 9: The Friend Who Held the Truth
I didn’t answer Maya’s call.
I watched her name disappear from my screen.
Then appear again.
Then disappear.
Again.
Again.
Five missed calls.
Five times I almost picked up.
Five times I remembered the handwriting on the page.
*The person who betrayed me is the last person you would suspect.*
*Maya Bennett.*
My best friend.
The person who sat beside me while I cried after Adrian’s betrayal.
The person who told me she believed me.
The person who said she would help me find the truth.
The person who apparently knew more than she ever admitted.
I looked around my mother’s old bedroom.
The walls felt different now.
The memories felt different.
Because suddenly, every person in my life had become a question.
My phone buzzed again.
This time, a message.
From Maya.
*Please let me explain. Don’t make a decision before you hear me.*
I stared at the words.
The worst part was that I wanted to believe her.
Because anger was easy.
Betrayal was easy.
But losing Maya?
That was harder.
She had been there when nobody else was.
She was the person I called when Adrian worked late.
The person who knew my fears.
The person who knew my dreams.
And now I had to ask myself the one question I hated most.
What if she had never been my friend?
What if she had only been watching?
I went back to the apartment.
Not Maya’s.
A hotel.
A place where nobody knew I was.
A place where nobody could find me unless I wanted them to.
I placed the journal on the table.
Then I read every page.
Slowly.
Carefully.
The woman who wrote those words wasn’t the woman I had become.
She was braver.
She was sharper.
She saw things I didn’t.
And she left clues for me.
Like she knew someday I would need them.
One entry stopped me.
*March 14.*
*I finally understand why Adrian is afraid. He isn’t protecting his reputation. He’s protecting Sophie. But I don’t know if I can forgive him for what he did.*
I read it again.
Adrian protected Sophie.
But what did he do?
Another entry.
*March 22.*
*Maya knows. I told her everything because I thought she was the only person I could trust.*
My heart stopped.
I turned the page.
The next sentence was underlined.
*I was wrong to trust too easily.*
I closed the journal.
Because suddenly I understood.
Maya wasn’t the person who discovered the truth.
She was the person I told.
That was different.
A horrible possibility formed in my mind.
Maybe Maya didn’t betray me.
Maybe someone used her.
I called Adrian.
He answered immediately.
“Where are you?””
Not hello.
Not are you okay.
Where are you?
“I found the journal.””
Silence.
Then:
“What did you read?””
“You tell me.””
“Elena.””
“Did Maya know?””
A long pause.
That was all I needed.
“She knew.””
My chest tightened.
“How much?””
“Everything.””
I closed my eyes.
“Everything?””
“She knew about Sophie.””
I felt sick.
“She knew I had a daughter?””
“Yes.””
“And she never told me.””
Adrian’s voice became quiet.
“She was trying to protect you.””
I laughed.
Everyone’s favorite excuse.
Protect you.
Protect you.
Protect you.
Everyone had protected me so much that they destroyed my life.
“How?””
“I don’t know.””
“Adrian.””
“I’m telling the truth.””
“You expect me to believe that?””
“No.””
His answer surprised me.
“I expect you to investigate.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“You’re finally doing what you should have done eight years ago.””
The words hurt.
Because they were true.
“What happened eight years ago?””
Silence.
Then:
“Maya found out who Sophie’s father was.””
My breath caught.
“What?””
“I don’t know if she told you.””
“Who was he?””
Adrian didn’t answer.
“Adrian.””
His voice became lower.
“Elena, that’s the one truth you need to hear from Maya.””
I hated that he was right.
Maya came to the hotel the next morning.
I didn’t invite her.
She came anyway.
When I opened the door, she looked exhausted.
Like she hadn’t slept.
Good.
Neither had I.
“Elena.””
I stepped aside.
“Come in.””
She walked inside slowly.
Her eyes moved to the journal on the table.
Then she closed them.
“You found it.””
“Yes.””
She nodded.
“I knew this day would come.””
I stared at her.
“How long?””
She swallowed.
“How long what?””
“How long have you known?””
Maya looked down.
“Eight years.””
The answer hurt more than I expected.
Eight years.
The same amount of time Adrian lied.
The same amount of time my life was built on missing pieces.
“Why?””
She looked at me.
And for the first time, I saw something I had never seen before.
Shame.
“Because you asked me to.””
I froze.
“What?””
“You asked me to keep the secret.””
“No.””
“Yes.””
“That’s impossible.””
Maya reached into her bag.
Pulled out an envelope.
She placed it on the table.
“This is from you.””
I stared.
Another letter.
Another piece of a life I didn’t remember.
I opened it.
My handwriting.
*Maya, if I forget, don’t tell me unless Sophie is in danger.*
My hands trembled.
The next line destroyed me.
*I need to make the choice again when I’m myself.*
I looked at Maya.
“What does this mean?””
She wiped tears from her eyes.
“It means after your accident, you woke up afraid.””
“Afraid of what?””
“Of making the wrong choice.””
I shook my head.
“I don’t understand.””
Maya sat down.
“I was there the night everything happened.””
My heart pounded.
“You were?””
“Yes.””
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because you made me promise.””
“No.””
“Yes.””
Her voice broke.
“You looked me in the eyes and told me if you ever forgot, I had to let you find the truth yourself.””
I stared at her.
“Why?””
“Because you knew you would hate yourself.””
The room went silent.
“For what?””
Maya looked at me.
“For choosing survival over your daughter.””
I felt my stomach drop.
“I abandoned Sophie?””
“No.””
The answer came immediately.
“No, Elena.””
She reached across the table.
“You saved her.””
I looked away.
“Then why hide her?””
“Because someone was hunting her.””
“Who?””
Maya hesitated.
That hesitation terrified me.
“Tell me.””
She looked at the floor.
“Your father.””
I froze.
“My father is dead.””
“I know.””
“Then how?””
Maya took a deep breath.
“Because he wasn’t acting alone.””
My blood ran cold.
“Who?””
She looked at me.
“The person who financed everything.””
“No.””
“Elena.””
“No.””
I stood.
“Don’t say it.””
Maya’s eyes filled with tears.
“I’m sorry.””
“Don’t.””
But she said it anyway.
“The person behind the entire operation was…”
The door suddenly opened.
Both of us turned.
Adrian stood there.
His face was pale.
“How did you get here?””
He ignored the question.
He looked at Maya.
“You told her.””
Maya stood.
“She deserved the truth.””
Adrian’s jaw tightened.
“No. Not yet.””
I stared at both of them.
“What aren’t you telling me?””
Neither answered.
And that was when I understood.
There was still another secret.
Another layer.
Another person.
“You both knew.””
Adrian looked at me.
“Elena…”
“You both knew everything about my life.””
“No.””
“Yes.””
My voice shook.
“You decided what I could handle.””
Neither denied it.
I laughed quietly.
A painful laugh.
“All these years, I thought Adrian was the only person who controlled my life.””
I looked at Maya.
“I was wrong.””
Maya stepped forward.
“Elena, please.””
I moved away.
“Who was behind it?””
Silence.
Then Adrian spoke.
And the fear in his voice told me the answer before he said it.
“The person who wanted Sophie gone…”
He paused.
“The person who caused your accident…”
Another pause.
“The person who has been watching you this entire time…”
I waited.
Adrian looked at Maya.
Then back at me.
“It was Vanessa.””
My heart stopped.
“No.””
Maya whispered:
“Yes.””
I shook my head.
“That doesn’t make sense.””
“It does,” Adrian said.
“Why?””
His eyes filled with regret.
“Because Vanessa Carlisle isn’t Adrian Whitmore’s mistress.””
The room went silent.
“She’s Lillian Vale’s sister.””
I couldn’t move.
I couldn’t speak.
And then my phone rang.
A video message.
From Vanessa.
I opened it.
Her face appeared on the screen.
She smiled.
Not kindly.
Not sadly.
Like someone who had been waiting years for this moment.
“Hello, Elena.””
My blood turned cold.
“I think it’s time you finally met the real reason everything happened.””
The video changed.
A little girl appeared.
Sophie.
Older now.
Terrified.
Standing beside Vanessa.
And Vanessa whispered:
“Your daughter has something to tell you.””
Sophie looked into the camera.
May you like
And said:
“Mom… I remember what happened that night.””
