Chapter 2: The Secret I Was Never Meant to Find
The message remained on my phone long after I left the ballroom.
I sat inside my car with the engine running, my hands frozen around the steering wheel, staring at those words until the letters blurred.
*Elena, if you want to know why Adrian chose Vanessa, you need to find out what happened eight years ago.*
Eight years ago.
The exact year Adrian and I met.
The exact year everything in my life changed.
A normal person would have called the number immediately.
A normal person would have demanded answers.
But I had learned something about Adrian Whitmore over the last eight years.
When someone wanted you to react quickly, there was usually a reason.
So I did the opposite.
I waited.
I breathed.
I thought.
Outside my windshield, the city lights reflected across the wet pavement. Rain had started falling while I was inside the ballroom, turning the streets of Whitmore Heights into a blur of gold and silver.
My cheek still hurt.
My heart hurt more.
But underneath the pain was something I hadn’t felt in years.
Clarity.
My phone vibrated again.
The same unknown number.
This time, there was an attachment.
A photograph.
My finger hovered over it.
For a moment, I was afraid.
Not because I didn’t want to see it.
Because some part of me already knew I would regret seeing it.
I opened the image.
My breath stopped.
It was a newspaper clipping.
Eight years old.
The headline was faded, but I could still read it.
*LOCAL BUSINESSMAN’S SON CLEARED AFTER MYSTERIOUS ACCIDENT.*
Below the headline was a picture of a younger Adrian.
Twenty-eight years old.
The same confident smile.
The same expensive suit.
The same eyes that had convinced me he was the safest person in the world.
Underneath his picture was another name.
A name I had never heard before.
*Lillian Vale.*
I stared at the photograph.
Who was she?
Why was Adrian connected to her?
And why had someone sent this to me tonight?
Another message appeared.
*Ask him about Lillian. Watch his face.*
I looked at the screen.
Then I laughed.
A quiet, broken laugh.
Because suddenly I understood.
Someone wasn’t just trying to hurt me.
Someone was trying to wake me up.
I didn’t go home.
Not to the mansion Adrian and I shared.
Not to the bedroom where his side of the closet was still filled with perfectly arranged suits.
Not to the kitchen where I had spent years preparing meals for someone who was secretly planning my downfall.
I drove to my best friend’s apartment.
Maya Bennett opened the door before I even knocked twice.
One look at my face, and her expression changed.
“Oh my God.””
She stepped forward.
“Elena…”
I tried to smile.
It didn’t work.
Maya’s eyes filled with anger.
“Who did this?””
I looked away.
She already knew.
She had watched the livestream.
Everyone had.
“Adrian,” I whispered.
The silence that followed was heavier than any scream.
Maya closed her eyes for a second.
“I’m going to kill him.””
Despite everything, a small laugh escaped me.
“You always say that.””
“No,” she replied, grabbing a towel from the kitchen and placing it gently against my cheek.
“Usually I’m joking.””
She looked at the bruise forming beneath my skin.
“Tonight I’m considering options.””
I sat on her couch while she moved around the apartment, gathering ice, pain medication, and everything else she thought could fix something that couldn’t be fixed.
Maya had been my friend before Adrian.
That mattered.
Because lately, I realized almost everyone in my life had become connected to him.
His friends.
His business partners.
His world.
Maya was the only person who still remembered Elena before Whitmore.
“You need to report him,” she said.
I looked down.
“I know.””
“Then why do you sound like you’re defending him?””
“I’m not.””
“You are.””
I stayed quiet.
Maya sat across from me.
“Elena, I watched that video.””
My stomach tightened.
“The whole thing?””
She nodded.
“And I heard the recording.””
I looked at her.
“The recording wasn’t fake?””
“No.””
She leaned forward.
“Which means this is bigger than Vanessa.””
I swallowed.
“I know.””
“What else happened tonight?””
I hesitated.
Maya noticed immediately.
“What?””
I pulled out my phone.
“I received this.””
I handed it to her.
She read the message.
Then she opened the photograph.
Her eyebrows pulled together.
“Lillian Vale?””
“You know her?””
“No.””
Her eyes moved back to the article.
“But I know that name.””
I froze.
“What?””
Maya looked uncomfortable.
“Where have I heard it?””
She stood up and walked toward her bookshelf.
For several seconds, she searched through old files.
Finally, she pulled out a folder.
“What is that?””
“Something I found months ago.””
I stared at her.
“You found something about Lillian?””
“Not exactly.””
She opened the folder.
Inside were documents.
Old documents.
The kind people kept because they mattered.
She pulled out a photocopy.
“My mother used to work at a law firm downtown,” Maya said.
“Before she retired, she kept copies of unusual cases.””
I looked at the paper.
There was a name at the top.
*Vale Foundation Investigation.*
My heart started beating faster.
“Why didn’t you show me this?””
“Because I didn’t know it had anything to do with Adrian.””
She looked at me.
“Until tonight.””
I picked up the document.
The paper was old.
Yellow around the edges.
But the words were clear.
A charity foundation.
Missing funds.
A young woman who disappeared before she could testify.
And one name mentioned repeatedly.
Whitmore Holdings.
My hands became cold.
“No.””
Maya watched me.
“Elena…”
“No.””
I shook my head.
“That doesn’t make sense.””
“Why?””
“Because Adrian would have told me.””
Maya didn’t answer.
That silence hurt more than anything.
Because she didn’t believe me.
And maybe worse…
Neither did I.
The next morning, I returned to the Whitmore mansion.
Not because I wanted to.
Because I needed answers.
The house looked exactly the same.
That was the strangest part.
The flowers were fresh.
The marble floors were polished.
The sunlight entered through the massive windows like it always did.
A perfect home.
A perfect lie.
I walked inside.
Adrian was waiting in the living room.
He had changed clothes.
Dark suit.
No tie.
A carefully controlled expression.
The man from the ballroom was gone.
Now he looked like the businessman everyone admired.
“Elena.””
I stopped.
“What?””
His jaw tightened.
“We need to talk.””
I almost smiled.
“Now you want to talk?””
He looked at my face.
For a second, something like guilt appeared.
Then it disappeared.
“You shouldn’t have played that recording.””
“You shouldn’t have hit me.””
His eyes hardened.
“You humiliated me.””
I stared at him.
There it was again.
Not an apology.
Not regret.
Only himself.
“You still don’t understand what you did.””
“I understand exactly what I did.””
“No,” I said quietly.
“You don’t.””
I stepped closer.
“Because if you did, you’d be afraid.””
Something flickered across his face.
Fear.
Just like last night.
I saw it.
“Who sent you that message?””
The question came too quickly.
I noticed.
And so did he.
I kept my expression calm.
“What message?””
A mistake.
A tiny one.
But Adrian was usually too careful to make mistakes.
His eyes narrowed.
“You received something.””
I stared at him.
“How do you know?””
Silence.
The room seemed to shrink.
For eight years, I had watched Adrian negotiate billion-dollar deals.
I had seen him lie to investors.
Charm reporters.
Control entire rooms.
But now, standing across from him, I saw something different.
Panic.
“Who is Lillian Vale?”” I asked.
The change was instant.
His face lost all color.
For the first time since I met him…
Adrian Whitmore looked terrified.
“Where did you hear that name?””
I didn’t answer.
I watched him.
The man who never showed weakness.
The man who believed he owned every situation.
The man who had just revealed everything with one reaction.
“Tell me,” I said.
He looked away.
“Elena, you don’t understand.””
“Then explain it.””
“You need to leave this alone.””
My stomach dropped.
Because that wasn’t a denial.
That was a warning.
“Who was she?””
His voice lowered.
“Someone who destroyed everything.””
I stared at him.
“Or someone you destroyed?””
His expression changed.
Anger returned.
Cold.
Sharp.
Dangerous.
“You have no idea what you’re asking.””
“Then make me understand.””
He stepped closer.
“Elena…”
The way he said my name made my skin crawl.
Not with fear.
With recognition.
Because I suddenly realized something.
Adrian wasn’t afraid I would discover his affair.
He wasn’t afraid of losing his reputation.
He was afraid I would discover the truth about who he was before he became my husband.
Before the foundation.
Before the money.
Before the perfect image.
My phone buzzed.
Both of us looked down.
A new message.
From the unknown number.
I opened it.
And this time there was no photograph.
Only four words.
*Ask Adrian about the baby.*
My hands went numb.
I looked up.
Adrian had seen the message too.
And the expression on his face told me everything.
Because he didn’t look confused.
May you like
He didn’t look surprised.
He looked like a man who had just realized the past he buried had finally come back to collect its debt.
