Amused

Chapter 1: The Charity Gala

“The first thing everyone heard was not the orchestra.””

It was the sound of my husband’s hand hitting my face.

The music stopped one second later, but the damage was already done.

I stood beneath the crystal chandelier of the Whitmore Grand Ballroom, surrounded by two hundred guests wearing designer gowns, tailored tuxedos, and expressions of pure disbelief. My cheek burned. My ears rang. The taste of blood spread across my tongue where my teeth had cut my lip.

And in front of everyone, Adrian Whitmore looked at me like I was the embarrassment.

Not the man who had just assaulted his wife.

Not the man standing beside another woman at the charity gala for the foundation we built together.

Him.

Adrian adjusted his cufflink as if nothing unusual had happened. Then he placed his arm around Vanessa Carlisle’s waist and pulled her closer.

Vanessa Carlisle.

His mistress.

The woman wearing the red silk dress I had helped choose for a charity auction three months ago because I thought she was one of the foundation’s donors.

The irony almost made me laugh.

Almost.

Behind us, the giant stage banner stretched across the ballroom.

THE WHITMORE HOPE FOUNDATION — SUPPORTING SURVIVORS OF ABUSE.

I stared at those words while the room stared at me.

Eight years of marriage.

Eight years of standing beside Adrian while he built his public image as a generous businessman with a heart for protecting vulnerable women.

And tonight, at the very event celebrating abused women, he had slapped his wife in front of everyone.

“Apologize to her,” Adrian said.

His voice was low, but the ballroom was so quiet that every person heard him.

I slowly turned my eyes toward him.

“Excuse me?””

Vanessa gave a small, wounded sigh and pressed her hand against her chest.

“Elena, please don’t make this worse,” she said.

“You already ruined my speech.””

Her voice was soft.

Too soft.

The kind of voice people used when they wanted the world to think they were innocent.

I looked at the microphone still sitting on the podium.

Twenty minutes earlier, Vanessa had stepped onto that stage and delivered a speech about compassion. She had spoken about kindness, dignity, and giving victims of abuse a second chance.

Everyone had applauded.

Everyone had admired her.

Especially Adrian.

He had watched her like she was the only person in the room.

I had noticed.

I had noticed everything.

The way his hand rested on her lower back when he guided her toward the stage.

The way she smiled at him before every photograph.

The way they looked at each other with the confidence of two people who believed they had already won.

But I had ignored it.

Because Adrian was my husband.

Because eight years meant something.

Because I had built a life with him from nothing.

I met Adrian when he was sleeping in his office three nights a week, chasing contracts nobody thought he could win. He had a dream and a broken old laptop. I had a degree in nonprofit management and a stubborn belief that people could become better versions of themselves.

We became a team.

When his company grew, I helped him create the foundation.

When newspapers wrote about his generosity, I was the one organizing the programs behind the scenes.

When people called him a hero, I smiled beside him.

I never cared about the attention.

I cared about the work.

But standing there with my cheek burning, I realized something painful.

I had spent years protecting a man who had never protected me.

“Adrian,” I whispered, “you actually expect me to apologize?””

His expression hardened.

That was the face the public never saw.

The face behind closed doors.

“You embarrassed Vanessa in front of the board,” he replied.

I stared at him.

“The board?””

A strange laugh escaped my throat.

“Your wife is standing here with a split lip, and you’re worried about the board?””

Several guests looked away.

Some looked uncomfortable.

A few looked ashamed.

But nobody moved.

Nobody stepped between us.

That was the cruelest part.

A room full of powerful people.

A room full of executives, politicians, celebrities, and donors.

And everyone was waiting to see what happened next.

Vanessa stepped closer.

“Elena, this isn’t helping.””

I looked at her red dress.

The same dress I had chosen.

The same dress I had complimented when she tried it on at the boutique.

“You’re right,” I said quietly.

Her eyes flickered.

For the first time that night, she looked uncertain.

I wiped the blood from my lip with my fingers.

“This isn’t helping.””

Adrian narrowed his eyes.

“What exactly is that supposed to mean?””

I looked around the ballroom.

At the guests.

At the cameras.

At the giant banner behind us celebrating survivors of abuse.

Then I looked back at the man who had built an empire by convincing the world he was kind.

“It means,” I said, “I’m done helping you.””

A murmur moved through the crowd.

Adrian’s jaw tightened.

“Careful, Elena.””

There it was.

The warning.

The same tone he used when we were alone.

The tone that meant I was supposed to remember who had money.

Who had power.

Who had the reputation to destroy the other person.

But tonight, something inside me had finally broken.

Not my heart.

Not my pride.

Something else.

Fear.

I had been afraid of losing Adrian.

Afraid of losing our marriage.

Afraid of becoming the woman people whispered about.

The abandoned wife.

The failure.

But as I stood beneath that chandelier, surrounded by strangers watching my humiliation, I realized I had already lost everything worth saving.

The only thing left was myself.

“Security,” Adrian called.

The word sent a wave through the room.

A few people gasped.

I looked at him carefully.

“Are you having me removed?””

His face showed no regret.

“No,” he said.

“I’m asking you to leave before you create more damage.””

More damage.

I almost smiled.

The man who hit me was worried about damage.

I reached into my purse and pulled out my phone.

Adrian watched me.

“What are you doing?””

I unlocked the screen.

“Making sure the truth has somewhere to go.””

For the first time, his confidence slipped.

Only for a second.

But I saw it.

Vanessa saw it too.

Her fingers tightened around his arm.

“Elena,” she said quietly, “you don’t want to do this.””

I turned toward her.

“No?””

She looked at me with fake sadness.

“You’ll regret destroying your own family.””

My family.

That word almost hurt more than the slap.

Because I suddenly understood.

Vanessa wasn’t afraid of losing Adrian.

She was afraid of losing the life she thought she had stolen.

I lifted my phone.

“Interesting choice of words.””

Adrian stepped forward.

“Give me the phone.””

I didn’t move.

“Why?””

“Because you don’t understand what you’re doing.””

I looked directly into his eyes.

“No, Adrian. I understand exactly what I’m doing.””

I pressed one button.

The screen lit up.

A recording.

The conversation I had captured twenty minutes before the speech.

The conversation Adrian thought nobody heard.

The ballroom went silent again.

And then, from my phone, Vanessa’s voice echoed through the speakers.

“I can’t keep pretending to be patient, Adrian. You promised me she would be gone before tonight.””

A wave of shock moved through the crowd.

Adrian’s face changed.

Vanessa froze.

The recording continued.

“She has no idea, does she?”” Vanessa’s voice said.

“She still thinks this foundation belongs to her.””

Then Adrian answered.

“She won’t have anything left when we’re finished.””

A cold feeling moved through my body.

I had expected betrayal.

I had expected the affair.

But not this.

Not a plan.

Not a trap.

Not a carefully designed ending to my life.

The recording stopped.

Nobody spoke.

Then Adrian whispered my name.

“Elena…”

For the first time that night, he sounded afraid.

I looked at the man I had loved for eight years.

The man I defended.

The man I trusted.

And I realized the slap wasn’t the moment my marriage ended.

It was the moment I finally saw the truth.

I turned away from him.

But before I reached the ballroom doors, my phone vibrated.

A new message appeared from an unknown number.

One sentence.

One name.

May you like

And it made my blood run cold.

*Elena, if you want to know why Adrian chose Vanessa, you need to find out what happened eight years ago.*
