Amused

Chapter 8: The Girl Behind the Locked Door

I stared at the photograph until my vision blurred.

A little girl.

A stuffed rabbit.

A window.

And those words.

*She has been waiting for you.*

My hands shook so badly I almost dropped my phone.

Eight years.

Eight years of my life missing.

Eight years of a child growing up somewhere without me.

Eight years of people making decisions about my daughter while I lived a lie.

I zoomed in on the picture.

Her face.

Her eyes.

There was something familiar.

Not because I remembered her.

Because some part of me knew her.

A mother’s instinct.

Even buried beneath years of missing memories, something inside me recognized her.

“Maya.””

She answered on the first ring.

“Elena?””

“I found her.””

Silence.

Then:

“What?””

I sent the picture.

A few seconds passed.

“Oh my God.””

“I need to find her.””

“Elena, wait.””

“No.””

My voice cracked.

“I waited eight years.””

Maya went quiet.

Then she asked:

“Do you know where she is?””

“No.””

“Who sent the photo?””

“I don’t know.””

“Then we need to be careful.””

I closed my eyes.

Everyone kept saying that.

Be careful.

Wait.

Think.

But nobody understood.

I had already waited eight years.

My daughter had waited eight years.

I couldn’t wait anymore.

The next morning, I went back to the Whitmore mansion.

Not because I trusted Adrian.

Because I needed information.

The front door opened before I knocked.

Adrian stood there.

He looked like he hadn’t slept.

Good.

Neither had I.

“You saw the picture.””

Not a question.

I stepped inside.

“Where is she?””

His expression changed.

“You know?””

“Where is my daughter?””

The words hit him harder than I expected.

For a moment, he looked like a father.

Not a businessman.

Not a liar.

A father.

“She’s safe.””

“That’s not an answer.””

“It’s the only answer I can give right now.””

I stared at him.

“Eight years ago, you took my daughter away.””

“No.””

The answer came immediately.

“I didn’t.””

“Then explain.””

He looked toward the windows.

“After your accident, you were in the hospital for weeks.””

“I know.””

“You had memory problems.””

“I know.””

“And when you woke up, you didn’t remember Sophie.””

My chest tightened.

“What happened to her?””

Adrian swallowed.

“I arranged for her to stay somewhere safe.””

“Without telling me?””

“Yes.””

The honesty was almost worse.

“Why?””

“Because people were looking for her.””

“Who?””

He didn’t answer.

“Adrian.””

His voice became quiet.

“The same people who made Lillian disappear.””

The room went cold.

“You’re saying Sophie is in danger.””

“Yes.””

“Then why didn’t you tell me?””

His eyes met mine.

“Because you were already a target.””

I laughed bitterly.

“So you decided to steal my daughter to protect me?””

“I decided to keep her alive.””

The anger inside me burned.

“You don’t get to make that decision.””

“I know.””

The words surprised me.

Adrian looked exhausted.

“I know now.””

He led me into his office.

A room I had entered hundreds of times.

But today, everything looked different.

The shelves.

The documents.

The locked drawers.

Every object felt like evidence.

Adrian opened a hidden compartment beneath his desk.

Inside was a folder.

A small bracelet.

And a photograph.

The photograph showed Sophie.

Older than the first picture.

Maybe five years old.

Smiling.

My breath caught.

“She’s beautiful.””

Adrian looked at the photo.

“Yes.””

“You raised her?””

He hesitated.

“No.””

That surprised me.

“Then who did?””

He looked at the bracelet.

“Someone you trusted.””

I frowned.

“Who?””

Before he could answer, my phone rang.

Lillian.

I answered immediately.

“Where are you?””

“Elena.””

Her voice sounded frightened.

“Do not trust Adrian.””

I looked at him.

“Why?””

“Because he’s not telling you everything.””

My anger rose.

“Neither are you.””

Silence.

Then Lillian whispered:

“I know.””

The honesty surprised me.

“I know I haven’t told you everything.””

“Then start.””

She breathed in.

“The night of your accident…”

I waited.

“You didn’t lose your memory because of the crash.””

I froze.

“What?””

Adrian looked at me.

He heard.

“What did you say?””

Lillian continued.

“Someone gave you something.””

My stomach dropped.

“What?””

“I don’t know.””

“Who?””

“I saw Adrian there.””

The room became silent.

I looked at him.

He looked away.

“Adrian was at the accident?””

Lillian’s voice softened.

“Yes.””

My heart pounded.

“Why didn’t he tell me?””

“Because he was trying to protect you.””

I frowned.

That wasn’t what I expected.

“But he also knew the truth.””

“Yes.””

“So he lied.””

“Yes.””

I closed my eyes.

Everyone had a piece of the truth.

Nobody had all of it.

“Where is Sophie?”” I asked.

Lillian went quiet.

Too quiet.

“Lillian.””

“Elena…”

“What?””

“I need you to understand something.””

Her voice broke.

“Sophie was never hidden from you.””

I frowned.

“What does that mean?””

“She was with you.””

My breathing stopped.

“No.””

“Yes.””

“That’s impossible.””

“You were there.””

I looked at Adrian.

He looked like he already knew where this was going.

“Where?””

Lillian whispered:

“Your mother’s house.””

I felt the world shift.

“My mother?””

“Yes.””

“My mother died before I married Adrian.””

“I know.””

“Then how?””

Lillian didn’t answer.

Because she didn’t have to.

A memory surfaced.

A small house.

A garden.

A woman holding a baby.

My mother.

But she wasn’t holding a stranger’s child.

She was holding mine.

I stumbled backward.

“No.””

Adrian stepped forward.

“Elena.””

I pushed him away.

“Don’t.””

My voice broke.

“You knew.””

He closed his eyes.

“Yes.””

“You knew my mother had Sophie.””

“Yes.””

“And you let me believe she was gone?””

“I thought it was safer.””

“For who?””

He had no answer.

I drove to my mother’s old house alone.

Maya wanted to come.

I told her no.

This wasn’t because I didn’t need help.

It was because I needed to face whatever waited there.

The house had been empty for years.

But when I opened the door, something felt familiar.

Like walking into a dream.

The smell.

The hallway.

The old wooden stairs.

My childhood home.

Except now it held a secret.

I searched every room.

Nothing.

Then I noticed something strange.

A loose floorboard beneath my old bedroom window.

My heart started racing.

I pulled it up.

Inside was a small wooden box.

My hands shook as I opened it.

Photographs.

Letters.

A journal.

And one envelope with my name.

*Elena.*

I opened it.

The handwriting was mine.

Again.

*If you are reading this, it means I forgot.*

My throat tightened.

I continued.

*I need you to know Sophie is safe. I need you to know Adrian didn’t take her from me. I made the choice.*

I stopped.

The words made no sense.

I read the next line.

*I asked Adrian to protect her because someone close to us was trying to find her.*

Someone close.

My heart raced.

Then came the final sentence.

*The person who betrayed me is the last person you would suspect.*

I turned the page.

There was only one name.

One name.

A name that made my blood run cold.

Because it wasn’t Adrian.

It wasn’t Vanessa.

It wasn’t Lillian.

It was someone I trusted.

Someone who had stood beside me through everything.

Someone who had comforted me after the gala.

Someone who claimed to be protecting me.

The name written on the page was:

*Maya Bennett.*

My phone rang.

I froze.

The screen showed Maya’s name.

I stared at it.

Unable to move.

Then a message appeared before I answered.

From Maya.

*Elena, please don’t believe everything you find. I can explain.*

The room suddenly felt smaller.

The secret buried beneath my childhood home was no longer about Adrian.

It was about the person who had been standing beside me the entire time.

May you like

And for the first time since this nightmare began…

I didn’t know who I could trust.
