Chapter 5: The Memory I Was Never Allowed to Keep
My fingers went numb around my phone.
*Ask your husband what happened the night I disappeared.*
I stared at the name above the message.
*Lillian Vale.*
Not unknown.
Not hidden.
Not a random number.
Her name.
The woman Adrian had spent eight years pretending was nothing.
The woman whose daughter existed only in a photograph.
The woman who supposedly vanished.
A woman who was somehow messaging me.
Alive.
Or at least alive enough to send a message.
“Lillian?””
I whispered the name.
Adrian’s face changed.
Not confusion.
Not surprise.
Fear.
Pure fear.
“You need to leave,” he said.
I looked up.
“What?””
“Leave this house.””
I almost laughed.
“You’re serious?””
“Elena, listen to me.””
“No.””
My voice cut through the room.
“You listen to me.””
For the first time tonight, Adrian stopped talking.
I held up my phone.
“She’s alive.””
His silence confirmed everything.
My heartbeat became louder.
“You knew.””
“Elena—”
“You knew she was alive.””
He looked away.
That was enough.
Eight years of marriage.
Eight years of believing I knew every part of him.
And somehow, there was an entire person he had erased from my life.
A person who knew me.
A person who had been there before him.
“Tell me what happened.””
Adrian ran a hand through his hair.
“I can’t.””
The answer was so calm that it made me angry.
“You can’t?””
“No.””
“Or you won’t?””
His eyes met mine.
“Both.””
I stepped closer.
“You don’t get to decide what I know anymore.””
“Elena.””
“No.””
I pointed at the file on the desk.
“At some point, you decided you had the right to choose my memories, my choices, my entire life.””
“That’s not what happened.””
“Then explain.””
He opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
Because he couldn’t.
Because every explanation led back to the same thing.
A lie.
I left the mansion with the file.
Adrian didn’t stop me.
That scared me.
A man like Adrian always fought to control the situation.
But tonight, he let me walk away.
Almost like he knew there was nothing left he could do.
Maya was waiting downstairs in her apartment when I arrived.
She opened the door and immediately looked behind me.
“Where’s Adrian?””
“Not coming.””
She noticed the file in my hand.
“What happened?””
I walked inside.
“He knew.””
Maya closed the door.
“Knew what?””
“That Lillian was alive.””
Her expression changed.
“No.””
“Yes.””
“How?””
“I don’t know.””
I placed the file on the table.
“But I know something else.””
I opened it.
The photograph was still there.
Me.
Lillian.
Eight years ago.
Maya stared.
“Elena…”
“I don’t remember this.””
She looked at me.
“What do you mean?””
“I mean I was there.””
I touched the photograph.
“But I don’t remember meeting her.””
Maya slowly sat down.
“That’s impossible.””
“I know.””
I turned the photograph over.
The note was still there.
*She knows Elena. She always has.*
Maya read it again.
“Adrian wrote this?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“I don’t know.””
For several seconds, we sat in silence.
Then Maya asked the question neither of us wanted to say.
“Elena… what if he’s right?””
I looked at her.
“About what?””
“What if you do know her?””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“No.””
“You were there.””
“I would remember.””
“Would you?””
I hated the question.
Because it was reasonable.
And because I didn’t know the answer.
That night, I barely slept.
Every time I closed my eyes, pieces of memories appeared.
A coffee shop.
A woman crying.
A baby wrapped in white.
A man’s voice saying my name.
But every time I reached for the memory, it disappeared.
Like a dream after waking.
At 3:17 in the morning, I gave up.
I went to the kitchen.
Maya was already there.
“You weren’t sleeping either.””
She looked up from her laptop.
“No.””
“What are you doing?””
“Searching.””
“For what?””
She turned the screen toward me.
“Your past.””
I frowned.
“Maya.””
“Before you met Adrian.””
My stomach tightened.
“I know everything about that time.””
“Do you?””
She clicked something.
A news article appeared.
An old one.
The headline made my blood run cold.
*Local Woman Survives Downtown Accident.*
I looked at the date.
Eight years ago.
Three weeks before I met Adrian.
“That’s me.””
Maya nodded.
“Yes.””
I read the article.
A car accident.
A head injury.
A hospital stay.
My hands became cold.
“I never told you about this.””
“You didn’t remember.””
I looked at her.
“What?””
Maya lowered her voice.
“You told me you had gaps in your memory after the accident.””
I stared at her.
No.
That wasn’t possible.
I remembered that year.
I remembered graduating.
I remembered moving apartments.
I remembered everything.
Or I thought I did.
“Why don’t I remember telling you?””
“Because you forgot.””
The room went silent.
A terrible thought entered my mind.
“What happened the night of the accident?””
Maya hesitated.
“I don’t know.””
“Find out.””
She looked at me.
“Elena.””
“Please.””
Something in my voice made her stop arguing.
She nodded.
“I’ll look.””
By morning, we had more questions than answers.
The accident report was incomplete.
The hospital records were sealed.
And the strangest part?
The person who paid my medical bills was anonymous.
Not insurance.
Not family.
Someone else.
“Who would do that?”” Maya asked.
I stared at the document.
“I don’t know.””
But deep down…
I did.
A knock interrupted us.
Both of us froze.
Nobody knew we were here except—
Maya grabbed her phone.
“I didn’t tell anyone.””
The knock came again.
Harder.
I stood.
“Stay here.””
“Absolutely not.””
We walked toward the door together.
Maya looked through the peephole.
Her face changed.
“Elena.””
“What?””
She stepped away.
“It’s Adrian.””
My first instinct was anger.
My second was fear.
But before I could decide what to do, Adrian spoke from the other side.
“Elena, I know you’re inside.””
I didn’t answer.
“I need to explain.””
Maya mouthed:
“Don’t.””
I stared at the door.
“Why should I believe anything you say?””
Silence.
Then Adrian answered.
“Because Lillian isn’t the person you think she is.””
My hand tightened.
“What does that mean?””
“It means she didn’t disappear.””
I opened the door slightly.
Adrian stood there alone.
No security.
No assistant.
No mask.
“Then where was she?””
He looked at me.
“She was hiding.””
“From who?””
His expression changed.
“From me.””
The words shocked me.
“You’re saying she was afraid of you?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Adrian looked past me.
At the apartment.
At Maya.
Then back at me.
“Because eight years ago, she found out something about your family.””
I froze.
“My family?””
He nodded.
“And she was going to tell you.””
I stared at him.
“What?””
His voice became quieter.
“The night she disappeared…”
He paused.
“The night of your accident…”
My breath caught.
I felt the room tilt.
“No.””
“Elena.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“That’s not possible.””
Adrian looked devastated.
“I wish it wasn’t.””
I stepped back.
“You’re lying.””
“I’m not.””
“Then say it.””
He looked at me.
And for the first time, I saw genuine sadness in his eyes.
“You weren’t an innocent stranger who walked into my life.””
My heartbeat stopped.
“What are you saying?””
Adrian whispered:
“You were the reason Lillian disappeared.””
The hallway went silent.
Maya looked at me.
I looked at Adrian.
And somewhere deep inside my mind, behind the wall of missing memories, something cracked open.
A sound.
A voice.
A scream.
And then a single image flashed through my mind.
Lillian standing in the rain.
Holding a baby.
Looking directly at me.
May you like
And saying:
*“You promised you would protect her.””*
