Chapter 7: The Man Behind the Mask
Nobody spoke.
Not even the reporters.
Not even my brothers.
The only sound was the distant traffic moving through the city.
My father was alive.
Those four words changed everything.
I looked at Adrian.
“You knew?””
He didn’t answer.
That was enough.
“You knew my father was alive?””
His silence became his confession.
I walked toward him.
“Eight years.””
My voice was quiet.
“You spent eight years watching me mourn people who were still alive.””
Adrian looked away.
“Elena…”
“No.””
I shook my head.
“You don’t get to say my name like you’re the victim.””
My mother touched my arm.
“Your father disappeared because he discovered Adrian’s plan.””
I looked at her.
“My father knew about him?””
She nodded.
“He discovered Adrian was using your foundation as a way to move illegal money.””
Adrian immediately snapped.
“That’s a lie.””
Marcus looked at him.
“Interesting.””
Adrian frowned.
“What?””
“You deny the accusation before knowing exactly what we know.””
The silence that followed was devastating.
Adrian realized his mistake too late.
Caleb stepped forward.
“People who are innocent usually ask questions.””
Adrian looked furious.
“You’re all against me.””
“No,” I said.
“We are finally seeing you.””
That night, my family gathered in my office.
For years, I had avoided family discussions about Adrian.
Now every secret was on the table.
My father’s disappearance.
My mother’s silence.
Adrian’s betrayal.
The missing money.
Everything.
My mother opened another folder.
“This is what your father found.””
Inside were documents connected to Vale Corporation.
Names.
Transactions.
Hidden accounts.
And one signature.
Adrian Vale.
“He started small,” my mother explained.
“He used company funds.””
Julian studied the documents.
“Then moved into foundation money.””
I nodded.
“That explains why he wanted control.””
Marcus looked at me.
“He didn’t want your foundation.””
He paused.
“He wanted your reputation.””
I understood.
If Hope Foundation collapsed, thousands of women would suffer.
And Adrian would blame me.
He would walk away looking innocent.
While I carried the damage.
The next morning, Adrian appeared on television.
His interview played across every screen.
“I have always supported my wife,” he said.
I almost laughed.
He was still doing it.
Still performing.
Still pretending.
The interviewer asked:
“Mr. Vale, are you denying financial misconduct?””
“Absolutely.””
“And allegations that you abused your wife?””
Adrian looked directly into the camera.
“Elena and I had a difficult moment.””
A difficult moment.
That was what he called violence.
My hands tightened.
Then he continued.
“I believe she is being influenced by people who want revenge against me.””
Marcus turned off the television.
“He’s trying to change the story.””
Julian nodded.
“Classic strategy.””
Caleb looked at me.
“What do you want to do?””
I looked at the screen.
At Adrian’s confident face.
At the man who believed he could rewrite reality.
“I want him to tell the truth.””
Caleb raised an eyebrow.
“How?””
I smiled.
“By giving him exactly what he wants.””
That afternoon, I contacted Adrian.
I asked to meet.
Alone.
My brothers disagreed.
“No,” Marcus said immediately.
“You don’t meet him without protection.””
“I need him comfortable.””
Julian looked at me.
“You’re setting a trap.””
“Yes.””
Caleb smiled slightly.
“Now you sound like us.””
The meeting took place at a private restaurant.
Adrian arrived wearing an expensive suit.
Still trying to look powerful.
He sat across from me.
“I knew you would come around.””
I looked at him.
“Did you?””
He smiled.
“You’re angry now. But you’re practical.””
I said nothing.
He leaned closer.
“You know we built something together.””
“No.””
I corrected him.
“I built something. You stood beside it.””
His smile faded.
“I can fix this.””
“How?””
“We release a statement. We blame misunderstandings.””
I stared.
“You still don’t understand.””
“What?””
“This isn’t about saving your image.””
He looked confused.
“Then what is it about?””
I leaned forward.
“Making sure everyone knows who you really are.””
His eyes narrowed.
“You think you’ve won?””
“No.””
I stood.
“I think you’re about to lose.””
As I walked away, his voice followed.
“Elena.””
I stopped.
“You should ask your father what happened the night he disappeared.””
I turned.
“What does that mean?””
Adrian smiled.
A cold, familiar smile.
“The truth you’re looking for…”
He paused.
“…is not the truth you want.””
That night, my father finally called.
The number was hidden.
My hands shook as I answered.
“Hello?””
A man’s voice whispered:
“Elena?””
I closed my eyes.
“Dad?””
A long silence.
Then:
“I’m sorry.””
My heart broke.
“Why did you leave?””
His answer came quietly.
“Because I was trying to keep you alive.””
I froze.
“What?””
Then he said:
“Adrian knows I’m calling you.””
The line went silent.
May you like
And before it disconnected, my father whispered:
“Run.””
