Chapter 3: The Secret He Buried for Eight Years
I left the ballroom twenty minutes later.
Not because I was afraid.
Because I needed space to think.
The city lights blurred through the windows of my car as I sat in silence.
My brothers followed.
For years, they had respected my choices.
Even when they hated them.
Even when they saw Adrian changing.
Marcus had once told me, “A person’s character appears when they think nobody important is watching.””
I had defended Adrian.
I had said he was stressed.
I had said success changed him temporarily.
I had said marriage required patience.
I had made excuses for a man who stopped making excuses for me.
Julian sat across from me in my private office.
His anger was obvious.
“Elena, tell me why I shouldn’t ruin him tonight.””
“Because that would make him a victim,” I answered.
Julian frowned.
“He hurt you.””
“Yes.””
“He humiliated you.””
“Yes.””
“Then why are you protecting him?””
I looked out the window.
“I’m not protecting him.””
I turned back.
“I’m making sure he has nowhere to hide.””
Marcus nodded slowly.
“That’s the answer I expected.””
Caleb leaned against the wall.
“We need to know what the caller meant.””
I looked at my phone.
The unknown number was gone.
No record.
No message.
Nothing.
But I knew one thing.
Someone had information.
The next morning, my attorney arrived with a folder.
Her name was Rachel Monroe.
She had worked with my family for years and was one of the few people who knew the truth about my marriage.
She placed the folder on my desk.
“Elena, I found something.””
I opened it.
Inside were financial records.
My stomach tightened.
“What is this?””
Rachel looked serious.
“Adrian has been transferring company assets.””
“To where?””
She hesitated.
“A private investment account.””
I looked closer.
The account holder name made my hands go cold.
Vanessa Hart.
For a moment, I said nothing.
Then I laughed.
Not because it was funny.
Because it hurt.
Eight years.
Eight years of building a life with someone who had been quietly preparing to betray me.
“He planned this,” Caleb said.
Rachel nodded.
“Yes.””
“How long?””
She opened another document.
“Almost a year.””
A year.
While he kissed me goodbye every morning.
While he told me he loved me.
While he introduced Vanessa as a charity consultant.
He had been preparing my downfall.
I closed the folder.
“Why?””
Marcus looked at me.
“People like Adrian don’t destroy someone because they hate them.””
“Then why?””
“Because they need to believe they are bigger than they are.””
That evening, Adrian came to my house.
Not our house.
My house.
The one I bought before we married.
The one he had always called “our first home.””
He entered without waiting.
“Elena.””
I looked up from my desk.
“You’re trespassing.””
He laughed bitterly.
“This is unbelievable.””
“What is?””
“You embarrassed me.””
I stared at him.
“You hit me.””
“And you destroyed my reputation.””
I almost smiled.
“You still think this is about reputation.””
He walked closer.
“You owe me.””
Those three words told me everything.
Not “I’m sorry.””
Not “I lost control.””
Not “I hurt you.””
You owe me.
I stood.
“Leave.””
His expression hardened.
“You think your brothers can scare me?””
“No.””
I walked closer.
“I think your own actions will.””
He lowered his voice.
“You have no idea what I can do.””
I studied him.
“Actually, Adrian, I think I’m finally beginning to understand.””
He reached into his coat and placed a document on the table.
“Sign this.””
I looked down.
Divorce papers.
With a settlement agreement.
A settlement that removed my rights to several companies.
I looked at him.
“You want me to sign away my own assets?””
“You should be grateful.””
I laughed.
“Grateful?””
He leaned forward.
“You were nothing before me.””
The room became completely still.
Because those words were the final proof.
Not the slap.
Not the affair.
Not the stolen money.
Those words.
He truly believed them.
I picked up the papers.
Then I tore them in half.
Adrian’s face darkened.
“You’ll regret that.””
“No.””
I looked him in the eye.
“You will.””
His phone rang.
He answered.
“What?””
The color slowly disappeared from his face.
I watched.
Listened.
And realized whoever was calling had delivered news he never expected.
“What do you mean the investors are pulling out?””
My heart stopped.
Because I knew then.
May you like
Someone had started the collapse.
And Adrian had no idea who was behind it.
