Chapter 5: The Person Who Knew Everything

The video played.

A woman’s voice filled the silence.

“I can make sure Elena never finds out.””

My blood ran cold.

Because I knew that voice.

Rachel.

My attorney.

My friend.

The woman who had sat beside me while I cried.

The woman who had helped me uncover Adrian’s betrayal.

Adrian watched my reaction carefully.

“There it is.””

His voice was almost satisfied.

“You finally understand.””

I looked at Rachel.

She wasn’t there.

She had left an hour earlier.

But the video was real.

The voice was real.

My mind raced.

“No.””

Adrian smiled.

“You trusted the wrong person.””

Marcus took the phone from him.

“Where did you get this?””

Adrian laughed.

“Does it matter?””

“Yes,” Marcus said.

“Because edited evidence is not proof.””

For the first time, Adrian looked uncertain.

Julian examined the video.

Then looked at me.

“Give me five minutes.””

Adrian scoffed.

“You think you can hack everything?””

Julian looked up.

“No.””

A pause.

“I think I can find the truth.””

Five minutes later, Julian’s expression changed.

Not confusion.

Not anger.

Disappointment.

“I found the original file.””

Everyone looked at him.

“The video was cut.””

Adrian’s face tightened.

“What?””

Julian turned the phone around.

“The missing section changes everything.””

He pressed play.

The recording continued.

Rachel’s voice returned.

“I can make sure Elena never finds out.””

A man answered.

Adrian’s voice.

“How long?””

Rachel replied:

“Until she signs everything over.””

Silence.

Then Adrian’s voice again.

“And after that?””

Rachel hesitated.

“She will know eventually.””

Adrian laughed.

“By then she’ll have nothing.””

I felt something inside me go completely still.

Not anger.

Not sadness.

Something colder.

Understanding.

Adrian had created the trap.

He had manipulated everyone.

Even Vanessa.

Even Rachel.

Everyone was just a piece on his board.

Marcus looked at Adrian.

“You forged evidence against your own wife.””

Adrian’s confidence disappeared.

“You don’t understand.””

“No,” I said quietly.

“I understand now.””

He looked at me.

I stepped closer.

“For eight years, I wondered when I lost my husband.””

My voice shook.

“But now I know.””

I looked at the man standing in front of me.

“I never lost him.””

A pause.

“I never had him.””

For once, Adrian had no answer.

Then his phone rang.

He ignored it.

It rang again.

And again.

Finally, he answered.

“What?””

The color drained from his face.

“No.””

Everyone watched.

“What do you mean the account is frozen?””

A long silence.

Then:

“Who authorized that?””

I looked at Julian.

He didn’t move.

Adrian slowly lowered the phone.

His eyes found mine.

“You.””

I tilted my head.

“What?””

“You did this.””

I smiled faintly.

“No, Adrian.””

I walked toward the door.

“You did.””

He followed.

“Where are you going?””

I stopped.

“To finish what you started.””

He laughed nervously.

“You think this is over?””

I looked back.

“No.””

I opened the door.

“It’s just the first time you’re finally losing.””

Outside, reporters gathered near the gate.

Cameras flashed.

Questions exploded.

And among the crowd stood someone I had never expected to see.

An elderly woman holding a folder.

A woman Adrian had claimed died years ago.

A woman whose name appeared on the first page of the documents inside.

My mother.

And she looked at Adrian with tears in her eyes.

“Hello, Adrian.””

He froze.

Because he had spent eight years believing I had no family left.

But he was wrong.

May you like

The biggest secret of all was not who my brothers were.

It was who I was never allowed to know was still alive.
