Chapter 4: The Enemy Inside His Empire
Adrian left my house without another word.
That scared me more than his anger.
Because Adrian Vale was a man who always had something to say.
A cruel comment.
A threat.
A manipulation.
Silence meant something had gone wrong.
The next morning, every business newspaper carried the same headline.
*VALE CORPORATION FACES INTERNAL INVESTIGATION.*
The articles described missing funds.
False reports.
Hidden accounts.
Contracts signed without proper authorization.
The world that Adrian built around himself started falling apart.
But I knew something.
Someone had helped expose it.
And I needed to know who.
Rachel found the answer first.
She walked into my office holding a tablet.
“Elena.””
Her voice was different.
“What happened?””
She placed the tablet down.
“There was another investor behind Adrian’s company.””
I looked at the screen.
A name appeared.
Daniel Cross.
My heart stopped.
“No.””
Rachel looked at me.
“You know him?””
I nodded slowly.
“Everyone does.””
Daniel Cross had been Adrian’s closest friend since college.
The man who stood beside us at our wedding.
The man Adrian called his brother.
Rachel continued.
“He provided evidence against Adrian.””
“Why?””
She looked uncertain.
“That’s what we need to find out.””
That afternoon, Daniel came to meet me.
He looked older than I remembered.
Tired.
Like someone carrying years of regret.
“I’m sorry,” he said.
I remained standing.
“For what?””
“For knowing.””
The words hit me.
“You knew about Vanessa?””
He looked down.
“Yes.””
My hands curled into fists.
“And you said nothing?””
“I tried.””
“When?””
“Six months ago.””
I remembered.
Six months ago, Adrian had suddenly become distant.
He started locking his phone.
Working late.
Traveling more.
I thought he was overwhelmed.
Daniel sat down.
“Adrian was planning to remove you from everything.””
“Why?””
“Because he believed your family would never interfere.””
I stared at him.
“He knew about my brothers?””
Daniel nodded.
“He knew their identities.””
The room went cold.
“What?””
“He knew who you were before you married him.””
That sentence broke something inside me.
For years, I believed Adrian didn’t know.
I believed he loved the simple version of me.
But he knew.
He always knew.
“Why would he stay?””
Daniel looked away.
“Because he thought marrying you would give him access.””
My stomach twisted.
Access.
Not love.
Not partnership.
A strategy.
I sat down slowly.
Everything I remembered changed.
Our first date.
Our wedding.
Our anniversary.
Were any of them real?
Daniel spoke quietly.
“I found out too late what he was doing.””
“Then why help me now?””
He looked at me.
“Because I finally realized I was protecting the wrong person.””
That evening, I returned home.
But Adrian was waiting outside.
His face looked different.
Not angry.
Desperate.
“Elena.””
I kept walking.
“Move.””
“I need to talk.””
“No.””
He stepped in front of me.
“I made mistakes.””
I stared at him.
“That’s what you call it?””
His eyes filled with frustration.
“You don’t understand what happened.””
“I understand perfectly.””
“No, you don’t.””
He lowered his voice.
“Someone betrayed me.””
I almost laughed.
“Someone?””
He looked at me.
Then whispered:
“It was Daniel.””
I said nothing.
Because I wanted to see what he would do.
Adrian grabbed my arm.
“Tell me you didn’t know.””
I pulled away.
“Don’t touch me.””
His face changed.
For a second, I saw the same man from the ballroom.
The man who believed he could control me.
Then he saw my brothers standing behind me.
And he stopped.
Because for the first time, he understood.
He was no longer facing the woman he thought he owned.
He was facing the family he never knew he had.
Marcus stepped forward.
“Adrian.””
His voice was calm.
Dangerously calm.
“You have one chance.””
Adrian swallowed.
“One chance for what?””
Marcus looked at him.
“To tell the truth.””
Adrian stared at us.
Then smiled.
A small, cold smile.
“You want the truth?””
He looked directly at me.
“Fine.””
He pulled out his phone.
“I have proof Elena wasn’t innocent either.””
My heart tightened.
“What?””
He pressed a button.
A video appeared on the screen.
And when I saw the person in the recording, I forgot how to breathe.
Because it was someone I trusted.
May you like
Someone close.
Someone who had been standing beside me all along.
