Chapter 6: The Mother He Tried to Erase
The woman standing at my gate looked exactly like the photographs I kept hidden in my childhood room.
Silver hair.
Gentle eyes.
The same small scar above her eyebrow.
A scar I remembered touching when I was five years old and asking if it hurt.
She smiled through tears.
“Hello, Elena.””
My world stopped.
For eight years, I had believed my mother was gone.
Not because I wanted to.
Because Adrian told me.
He told me the accident had taken her life.
He told me there was no point searching.
He told me the past would only hurt me.
And I believed him.
Because I loved him.
Because I trusted him.
Because I had no reason to believe my husband was lying about the woman who gave me life.
I stepped outside slowly.
My brothers followed.
Marcus looked at the woman in disbelief.
“Margaret?””
My mother’s eyes filled with tears.
“Yes, Marcus.””
The strongest man I knew suddenly looked like a little boy again.
“Mom?””
That one word broke everyone.
Julian covered his mouth.
Caleb turned away.
And I…
I couldn’t move.
I couldn’t breathe.
My mother reached for me.
But I stepped back.
Not because I didn’t love her.
Because I had too many questions.
“Why?””
My voice cracked.
“Why did you let me believe you were dead?””
Her face fell.
“I didn’t.””
I stared at her.
“What?””
She looked at Adrian.
And the hatred in her eyes shocked me.
“He made sure you never found me.””
Adrian immediately shook his head.
“This is insane.””
My mother ignored him.
“He told me if I contacted you, he would destroy everything you built.””
My hands trembled.
“Why would he do that?””
My mother looked at me sadly.
“Because he knew the truth.””
“What truth?””
She reached into her bag and pulled out an old folder.
“I was the one who warned you about him.””
I froze.
My mother opened the folder.
Inside were documents.
Emails.
Photos.
Financial records.
And one picture that made my stomach turn.
Adrian.
Standing beside Vanessa.
Three years before I ever knew Vanessa existed.
“No,” I whispered.
My mother nodded.
“He had been planning this from the beginning.””
Adrian stepped forward.
“You’re lying.””
Marcus immediately moved between them.
“Choose your next words carefully.””
Adrian stopped.
My mother looked at him.
“You met Elena because of her inheritance.””
The air disappeared from my lungs.
“What inheritance?””
My mother looked at me.
“The Whitmore family trust.””
I frowned.
“What are you talking about?””
She looked at my brothers.
“You never told her?””
Nobody answered.
And suddenly, I felt like I was standing in the middle of a room full of secrets.
“What don’t I know?””
Marcus sighed.
“Elena…”
“No.””
I looked at all of them.
“No more protecting me.””
My mother stepped closer.
“You were always protected.””
“I didn’t ask to be protected.””
My voice became louder.
“I asked to be trusted.””
Nobody spoke.
Finally, Julian said quietly:
“Mom is right.””
I looked at him.
“The Whitmore family trust was created by our grandfather. You were always the largest beneficiary.””
I stared.
“But I never touched it.””
“We know.””
Marcus nodded.
“Because you refused.””
I remembered.
When my grandfather died, lawyers came to me.
They told me I could access the family resources.
I refused.
I wanted to build something myself.
I wanted my success to belong to me.
Not my last name.
Adrian knew that.
Or at least, he thought he did.
My mother looked at Adrian.
“He believed Elena was pretending to be ordinary.””
Adrian’s face hardened.
“I loved her.””
My mother laughed bitterly.
“No.””
The word cut through the night.
“You loved what you thought she could give you.””
The reporters outside the gate started shouting questions.
“Mrs. Whitmore!””
“Is Adrian Vale being investigated?””
“Is your husband’s company collapsing?””
The cameras flashed.
Adrian looked around.
For the first time, he understood.
The world was watching.
The same world he had spent years trying to impress.
My mother handed me the folder.
“There is one more thing.””
I looked down.
“What?””
She hesitated.
“Adrian didn’t just hide me.””
My fingers tightened around the papers.
“What else?””
She looked directly into my eyes.
“He tried to have me declared mentally unstable so nobody would believe me.””
A cold wave passed through me.
“He tried to destroy your own mother?””
My mother nodded.
“And he almost succeeded.””
Adrian’s face changed.
For the first time, there was fear.
Not embarrassment.
Not anger.
Fear.
Because he knew what was coming.
I looked at him.
“Why?””
He said nothing.
“Why did you do this?””
His jaw tightened.
Then he whispered:
“Because you were never supposed to find out.””
My heart sank.
“Find out what?””
Adrian looked at my mother.
Then at me.
May you like
And said the one thing I never expected.
“That your father was alive too.””
