Chapter 8: The Mother I Never Knew

I spent my entire life grieving a mother who was supposed to have never existed.

That was the cruelest part.

Not knowing.

Not remembering.

How do you miss someone you never had?

How do you mourn a person whose face you never saw?

I sat at the kitchen table for hours after Thomas left.

The DNA report was still there.

A single piece of paper that destroyed everything I thought I knew.

Maya sat beside me.

She didn’t ask questions anymore.

She just held my hand.

And somehow, that hurt more.

Because she was ten years old.

She should have been worrying about homework.

Friends.

Cartoons.

Not whether her father’s entire identity was a lie.

Claire stood by the window.

Silent.

Finally, she spoke.

“My mother kept a journal.””

I looked up.

“What?””

She turned around.

“I found it years ago.””

My jaw tightened.

“Another thing you didn’t tell me?””

She closed her eyes.

“Yes.””

I looked away.

“I don’t know how to trust you right now.””

“I know.””

Her voice broke.

“I know I don’t deserve it.””

That surprised me.

Claire wasn’t defending herself.

She wasn’t explaining.

She was accepting the damage.

And somehow that made it harder to stay angry.

“Where is the journal?””

“At my mother’s old house.””

“Does Daniel know about it?””

“No.””

“Thomas?””

“No.””

I looked at her.

“Then why tell me now?””

“Because I think it’s time someone stopped hiding.””

That sentence felt different.

Because for once, she wasn’t asking me to protect her.

She was asking me to find the truth.

We drove there that afternoon.

Maya came with us.

I almost told her to stay home.

Almost.

But I stopped myself.

She had already spent too long being left outside conversations about her own life.

The old Carter house sat at the edge of town.

Weathered.

Quiet.

Forgotten.

The kind of place people drove past without looking twice.

But inside those walls was the answer to everything.

Claire unlocked the door.

The smell hit me immediately.

Dust.

Old wood.

Time.

“My mother lived here until she disappeared,” Claire said.

I looked around.

“You were six?””

“Yes.””

“Do you remember anything?””

She shook her head.

“Only pieces.””

“What pieces?””

She looked toward the hallway.

“My mother crying.””

I stopped.

“She cried often?””

“No.””

Claire swallowed.

“That’s why I remember.””

We searched for nearly an hour.

Nothing.

Then Maya called from upstairs.

“Dad?””

I ran.

She stood in a small bedroom.

Holding a wooden box.

“Where did you find that?””

“Behind the wall.””

I looked at Claire.

She went pale.

“How?””

Maya pointed.

“There was a loose piece.””

I opened the box.

Inside were letters.

Photographs.

Documents.

And one object that made Claire gasp.

A necklace.

“My mother’s.””

She picked it up.

Her hands shook.

Inside the pendant was a tiny folded piece of paper.

I carefully opened it.

Only three words were written.

*Find Mark Bennett.*

My heart stopped.

Claire looked at me.

“She knew.””

“She knew I existed.””

Claire nodded.

Then we found the journal.

It was hidden beneath the bottom of the box.

The first page had a date.

Three months before I was born.

I opened it.

The handwriting was elegant.

Evelyn’s.

*I don’t know if my child will ever read this.*

My breath caught.

Child.

Not son.

Not daughter.

Child.

*If you are reading this, then they failed to keep us apart forever.*

I continued.

*Your father believes he can protect you. He believes hiding the truth will keep you safe. But secrets have a way of hurting the innocent.*

I turned the page.

My hands shook.

*Thomas knows the truth. Claire knows only what she was told. And Mark… my son… I need you to understand one thing.*

I stopped.

My eyes burned.

Because for the first time, someone had written directly to me.

Someone who was supposed to be my mother.

*I never abandoned you.*

I closed my eyes.

That sentence broke something inside me.

Because somewhere deep down, a child version of me had always wondered.

Why didn’t she want me?

Why didn’t she stay?

Why wasn’t I enough?

And now, decades later, the answer was finally there.

She did want me.

She just couldn’t reach me.

I kept reading.

*Your father made a choice. A choice he believed was necessary. But the person who threatened us is still out there.*

My fingers tightened.

*If anything happens to me, do not trust the person who claims they are protecting you.*

The room became cold.

Claire noticed.

“What?””

I looked at the next line.

And felt my blood freeze.

Because Evelyn had written a name.

A name I recognized.

A name I never expected.

*The person who destroyed our family was not a stranger.*

*It was someone inside it.*

Below that was one final sentence.

*Mark, your father was not the man who betrayed me.*

I turned the page.

The next words were written larger.

May you like

Like she had wanted to make sure they were impossible to miss.

*Your father was the man who saved me.*
