Amused

Chapter 11: The Son Nobody Knew

For the next hour, nobody spoke.

Not because there was nothing to say.

Because there was too much.

Every answer created five new questions.

My father protected Evelyn.

My father helped her disappear.

My uncle claimed she was running from my father.

Someone was lying.

Maybe everyone was.

I sat at the kitchen table, staring at the photograph of Michael.

A stranger who shared my blood.

A brother I never knew existed.

A missing piece of my life.

“Why didn’t my father tell me?”” I asked.

Daniel looked at the picture.

“Because he thought knowing would put you in danger.””

I laughed quietly.

“That excuse again.””

“What?””

“Everyone keeps saying they lied to protect me.””

I looked around the room.

“But all those lies did was leave me blind.””

Nobody argued.

Because nobody could.

Claire sat beside me.

“I know.””

I looked at her.

“I’m sorry.””

Those words surprised me.

Not because I forgave her.

I wasn’t there yet.

But because I realized Claire finally understood.

Not the secrets.

The damage.

“I don’t know how to fix this,” she whispered.

I looked at Maya.

Neither did I.

But I knew one thing.

We couldn’t keep running.

“We find Michael.””

Daniel looked at me.

“You’re sure?””

“No.””

I looked at the photograph.

“I’m terrified.””

I took a breath.

“But I’m done letting fear decide what my family deserves to know.””

The search began with old records.

Daniel had contacts.

People who knew how to find things that others wanted buried.

Within hours, we discovered something strange.

Michael Bennett had never officially existed.

No birth certificate.

No school records.

No medical history.

Nothing.

Like he had been erased.

“How is that possible?”” Claire asked.

Daniel looked at the files.

“Because someone powerful wanted him gone.””

I stared at the empty records.

My father’s child.

Deleted.

Like he was never born.

Then we found one thing.

A hospital record.

Hidden under a different name.

A child admitted twenty years ago after a serious accident.

The patient:

Michael Carter.

Age:

Eight years old.

I looked at Daniel.

“Carter?””

He nodded.

“Robert changed his identity.””

“Why?””

Daniel looked at me.

“That’s what we need to find out.””

The hospital was abandoned now.

An old building scheduled for demolition.

We arrived before sunset.

The place looked like it had been forgotten by the world.

Broken windows.

Dust-covered floors.

Empty hallways.

“This is where Michael was treated,” Daniel said.

I looked around.

“How did you find this?””

“Your father kept a journal.””

I stopped.

“My father had a journal too?””

Daniel nodded.

“Robert never found it.””

“Where is it?””

Daniel looked at me.

“Hidden.””

I stared at him.

“You knew about my father’s journal and didn’t tell me?””

“I didn’t know where it was.””

“Then how do you know it exists?””

Daniel hesitated.

“Because Michael told me.””

I froze.

“You found him?””

Daniel nodded.

My heart started pounding.

“Where is he?””

Daniel looked away.

“He doesn’t want to be found.””

“Why?””

“Because he remembers what happened.””

The hallway suddenly felt colder.

“What happened?””

Daniel looked at me.

“He remembers the night Evelyn disappeared.””

I stepped closer.

“And?””

Daniel’s voice dropped.

“He remembers seeing your father.””

My stomach tightened.

“What did he see?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

Then a sound came from upstairs.

A door closing.

Everyone froze.

I looked toward the stairs.

“Did you bring someone?””

Daniel shook his head.

“No.””

Another sound.

Footsteps.

Slow.

Coming closer.

Claire grabbed my arm.

“Mark.””

A man appeared at the end of the hallway.

Older.

Tired.

Carrying years of pain in his face.

He looked at me.

And I knew.

Before he even spoke.

Because he had my father’s eyes.

“Are you Mark?””

I couldn’t speak.

He nodded slightly.

“My name is Michael Bennett.””

The brother I never knew.

The son my father erased.

The man everyone thought was gone.

He looked at me and said:

“I know why your father hid the truth.””

My voice barely worked.

“Why?””

Michael looked toward the empty hallway behind him.

“Because he wasn’t protecting Evelyn.””

May you like

A pause.

“He was protecting himself.””
