Chapter 2: What Maya Found

For ten years, I believed I knew Claire Bennett better than anyone.

I knew the way she drank coffee every morning but never finished the cup.

I knew she hated thunderstorms because her childhood home had been struck by lightning.

I knew she cried during animated movies but pretended she had something in her eye.

I knew her habits.

Her fears.

Her dreams.

But standing in that hospital room, watching her stare at a plastic envelope like it was a loaded weapon, I realized I didn’t know the most important thing about my own wife.

What was she hiding?

Nia closed the door.

“Everyone needs to calm down.””

Claire laughed nervously.

“I think this is being misunderstood.””

“Maya is afraid of you taking her backpack,” Nia replied.

“She’s a child. Children misunderstand things.””

I looked at Claire.

“Then explain.””

She looked at me.

“Mark.””

“No.””

My voice surprised even me.

“No more avoiding this.””

Claire’s face hardened.

“You’re doing this in front of strangers?””

“You made our daughter afraid to tell me something.””

“That’s ridiculous.””

Maya flinched.

I saw it.

And Claire saw it too.

For the first time, she looked guilty.

Only for a second.

Then it disappeared.

Nia picked up the envelope.

“Maya, can you tell us what’s inside?””

Maya nodded.

“It’s not mine.””

My eyebrows pulled together.

“What do you mean?””

“I found it.””

“Where?””

She looked at Claire.

Claire immediately stepped forward.

“Maya, don’t.””

Nia raised her hand.

“Let her speak.””

Maya took a shaky breath.

“Last week, Mom asked me to clean the hallway closet.””

Claire looked away.

“She said I could throw away old papers.””

“And?””

“I found the envelope behind some boxes.””

My stomach turned.

“What kind of papers?””

Maya’s eyes filled with tears.

“Pictures.””

Claire whispered.

“Maya.””

But Maya continued.

“There were pictures of Mom with another man.””

The room stopped.

I stared at my daughter.

Then at my wife.

The words didn’t make sense.

Not because I couldn’t believe Claire could cheat.

Because I couldn’t understand why Maya had been carrying that secret.

“Pictures?”” I asked.

Maya nodded.

“Mom told me not to tell you.””

Claire shook her head.

“That’s not what happened.””

“Then what happened?”” I asked.

She looked at me.

“I was going to explain.””

“When?””

No answer.

That was the problem.

Claire always had an answer.

A defense.

A reason.

But not this time.

Nia carefully opened the envelope.

Inside were several printed photographs.

She looked at them briefly.

Then her expression changed.

Not surprise.

Concern.

“Mr. Bennett.””

I reached out.

She hesitated.

Then handed them to me.

The first picture was Claire.

Standing outside a restaurant.

Smiling.

Beside a man I didn’t recognize.

The second picture showed them holding hands.

The third showed them entering a hotel.

My hands started shaking.

“Mark,” Claire whispered.

I looked up.

“How long?””

“It’s not what you think.””

“That sentence always means it’s exactly what I think.””

She stepped closer.

“Please listen.””

“No.””

My voice cracked.

“No, you listen.””

Maya covered her ears.

And that broke something inside me.

Because whatever was happening between Claire and me, our daughter should never have been standing in the middle of it.

I lowered the pictures.

“Maya, sweetheart, go with Nia for a minute.””

She looked scared.

“Dad?””

“I’m okay.””

She didn’t believe me.

But she nodded.

Nia guided her toward the small waiting area outside.

When the door closed, I faced Claire.

“Tell me the truth.””

Claire sat down.

For the first time that night, she looked tired.

“I didn’t cheat.””

I almost smiled.

“You expect me to believe that?””

“Yes.””

“After the pictures?””

She wiped her eyes.

“The man in those pictures is Daniel.””

“Who is Daniel?””

Claire looked at the floor.

“My brother.””

I froze.

“What?””

“My half-brother.””

I stared at her.

“I don’t have a brother.””

“I know.””

The silence that followed felt heavier than anger.

“What are you saying?””

Claire took a deep breath.

“Daniel found me three months ago.””

“Found you?””

“He contacted me online.””

“Why?””

She looked toward the door where Maya had disappeared.

“Because he wanted something from me.””

My confusion turned into frustration.

“Claire, you’re giving me pieces of a story.””

“Because I was scared.””

“Of what?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Of losing my family.””

I shook my head.

“You let our daughter carry this secret for a week.””

“I didn’t know she found it.””

“She said you told her not to tell me.””

Claire looked away.

“I told her not to get involved.””

“That’s not better.””

“No.””

Her voice broke.

“No, it isn’t.””

For a moment, I saw the woman I married.

The woman who sang badly while cooking dinner.

The woman who held my hand during my father’s funeral.

But then I remembered Maya’s face.

The fear.

The backpack.

The scream.

“Why didn’t you tell me about Daniel?””

Claire was quiet.

Then she said something that made my blood run cold.

“Because Daniel isn’t the only thing in that envelope.””

I looked at her.

“What else is inside?””

She didn’t answer.

She just stared at the backpack sitting on the chair.

And then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

“Hello?””

A man’s voice came through.

“Is this Mark Bennett?””

“Yes.””

A pause.

Then:

“Your wife has been lying to you.””

My grip tightened around the phone.

“Who is this?””

The man breathed slowly.

“Someone who knows what Claire did before she met you.””

I looked at Claire.

Her face had gone completely white.

The man continued.

May you like

“And if you open that envelope, you’ll find out your daughter isn’t the only person Claire kept in the dark.””

Then the call ended.
