Chapter 10: The Man Who Buried the Truth
I read the note three times.
Not because I didn’t understand the words.
Because I did.
And that made them worse.
*Stop searching.*
*Or your daughter will learn what happened to Evelyn.*
The paper trembled between my fingers.
Maya noticed immediately.
“Dad?””
I folded the note before she could see.
“Go sit with Claire.””
She looked at me.
“No.””
“Maya.””
“No.””
Her voice was soft.
But firm.
“I’m tired of people telling me to leave when something scary happens.””
The truth was painful because it came from a child.
I looked at her.
Ten years old.
Brave enough to face things grown adults had spent decades running from.
“You’re right,” I whispered.
I crouched down.
“But I need you to understand something. Being brave doesn’t mean you have to carry everything.””
She nodded slowly.
“Okay.””
She still didn’t leave.
So I stood and turned toward Daniel.
“Did you know this would happen?””
He shook his head.
“No.””
“You’re sure?””
“Yes.””
I looked at the package.
“Someone knows we found the journal.””
Daniel’s expression changed.
“They’ve been watching.””
Claire wrapped her arms around herself.
“Who?””
Nobody answered.
Because we all knew.
The answer was somewhere inside my family.
And that was the part that terrified me.
A stranger hurting you was frightening.
A stranger was easy to hate.
But family?
Family was where you lowered your guard.
Family was where you believed you were safe.
I looked at the document again.
My uncle Robert’s signature stared back at me.
Robert Bennett.
My father’s older brother.
The man who taught me how to ride a bike.
The man who gave speeches at my wedding.
The man who called Maya “his little princess.””
I remembered every holiday dinner.
Every handshake.
Every smile.
And now I wondered if every single one was fake.
“Why would Robert do this?”” I asked.
Daniel sat down.
“Because your father knew something.””
“What?””
“That Evelyn wasn’t just connected to you.””
He looked at Claire.
“She was connected to a business your family built.””
I frowned.
“My family?””
Daniel nodded.
“Your grandfather started a company with Evelyn’s father.””
Claire looked confused.
“My grandfather?””
“Yes.””
Daniel opened another file.
“The company was worth millions.””
I stared at the papers.
“I never knew about any of this.””
“Because your father walked away from it.””
“Why?””
Daniel looked at me.
“Because of what they were doing.””
The room became quiet.
“What were they doing?””
Daniel hesitated.
“Your grandfather and Robert were moving money.””
Claire frowned.
“Illegal money?””
“Yes.””
I looked at the documents.
My family.
My name.
A history I had never known.
“How does Evelyn fit into this?””
Daniel leaned forward.
“She found out.””
The answer was simple.
Terrifyingly simple.
“She discovered what they were hiding.””
“And my father?””
“Your father wanted to expose them.””
I swallowed.
“But he didn’t.””
“No.””
“Why?””
Daniel looked toward Maya.
“Because Robert threatened him.””
The room went cold.
“What did he threaten?””
Daniel’s voice lowered.
“Your mother.””
I froze.
“My mother?””
“Your father had two choices. He could expose Robert and risk losing everyone he loved.””
“Or?””
“Help Evelyn disappear.””
Claire looked shocked.
“Disappear?””
Daniel nodded.
“Your father created a plan.””
I stared at him.
“A plan to fake her disappearance.””
“Yes.””
“Then why didn’t he tell me?””
Daniel looked away.
“Because Robert wasn’t the only person watching.””
I felt my chest tighten.
“Who else?””
Daniel didn’t answer.
Instead, he reached into the folder.
He pulled out another photograph.
“This.””
I took it.
And my hands went numb.
It showed my father.
Evelyn.
And a young man standing beside them.
A young man I didn’t recognize.
Until I looked closer.
The resemblance was obvious.
The eyes.
The jawline.
The expression.
My stomach dropped.
“Who is that?””
Daniel said quietly:
“That’s the reason your father kept everything hidden.””
Claire stepped closer.
“Who?””
Daniel looked at me.
“That’s your father’s other son.””
I stared.
“What?””
Daniel nodded.
“There was another child.””
My mind struggled to keep up.
“My father had three children?””
“Yes.””
“No.””
I looked at the photograph.
“Who is he?””
Daniel’s expression darkened.
“His name is Michael.””
“Where is he now?””
Nobody answered.
That scared me.
“Daniel.””
He looked at me.
“Michael disappeared.””
“When?””
“Twenty years ago.””
The same time Evelyn disappeared.
The same time Thomas supposedly died.
A horrible thought formed in my mind.
“Are you saying…”
Daniel nodded.
“Yes.””
My voice became quiet.
“My family didn’t just hide a secret.””
Daniel looked at me.
“They buried people.””
At that moment, my phone rang.
Unknown number.
Again.
I answered immediately.
“Who is this?””
Silence.
Then a voice.
An older man.
Calm.
Cold.
“Mark.””
My body froze.
Because I knew that voice.
I had heard it my entire life.
“Uncle Robert?””
A pause.
Then:
“You should have listened to your father.””
I gripped the phone.
“Where are you?””
“You don’t want to find out.””
“You threatened my daughter.””
“No.””
His voice hardened.
“I warned you.””
“Where is Michael?””
Silence.
Then Robert said:
“Ask yourself why your father protected Evelyn.””
I frowned.
“What does that mean?””
The line went quiet.
Then one final sentence came through.
“The woman you call your mother wasn’t running from me.””
A pause.
May you like
“She was running from your father.””
The call ended.
