Chapter 7: The DNA Test My Father Hid
The message stayed on my phone screen for almost a minute.
I didn’t move.
I didn’t blink.
I just stared at those words until they stopped looking like words and started looking like a threat.
*Ask Thomas why your father kept the DNA test hidden.*
A DNA test.
My father.
My birth.
Three things that should have never been connected.
But somehow, they were.
“Mark?””
Claire’s voice sounded distant.
I looked up.
Everyone was watching me.
Maya.
Claire.
Thomas.
All of them waiting for me to say something that would make this nightmare make sense.
But I couldn’t.
Because for the first time in my life, I wondered if I actually knew my own name.
“What DNA test?”” I asked.
Thomas didn’t answer.
That was enough.
My anger rose instantly.
“No.””
I stood up.
“No more silence.””
Thomas looked away.
“I was hoping you wouldn’t find out this way.””
“You knew?””
“Yes.””
“You knew my father had a DNA test?””
“Yes.””
“And you said nothing?””
Thomas’s expression hardened.
“Because your father made me promise.””
I laughed once.
A bitter, empty sound.
“My father is dead.””
“Yes.””
“So his promises don’t matter anymore.””
Thomas looked at me.
“You don’t know what he was protecting you from.””
I stepped closer.
“Then tell me.””
He stayed silent.
“Tell me!””
Maya jumped slightly.
I immediately lowered my voice.
“Sorry.””
I turned away.
I hated that.
I hated that my anger was spilling into a house where my daughter already felt unsafe.
Thomas noticed.
“You’re exactly like him.””
I froze.
“Like who?””
“Your father.””
The words hit harder than I expected.
“Don’t compare me to him.””
“Why?””
“Because I’m not him.””
Thomas nodded slowly.
“That’s what I used to think too.””
Claire stepped between us.
“Thomas, enough.””
He looked at her.
“You deserve the truth too.””
Her face changed.
“Why?””
“Because your mother was part of it.””
Claire went still.
“What does my mother have to do with Mark’s DNA?””
Thomas looked at the table.
“Everything.””
No one spoke.
Then he finally began.
“Twenty-six years ago, before Mark was born, his father discovered something about Evelyn Carter.””
Claire whispered:
“My mother.””
Thomas nodded.
“Evelyn was hiding a relationship.””
I frowned.
“With who?””
Thomas looked at me.
“Your father.””
The room went silent.
“No.””
The word came out before I could stop it.
Thomas continued.
“Your father and Evelyn were involved before he married Mark’s mother.””
I shook my head.
“That’s impossible.””
“Why?””
“Because my father loved my mother.””
“Maybe he did.””
The answer hurt.
“People can love someone and still make terrible choices.””
I looked away.
My entire childhood was rearranging itself.
Every memory.
Every conversation.
Every time my father went quiet when I asked about my family.
I remembered one night when I was sixteen.
I had asked him why we never visited certain relatives.
He had looked at me and said:
“Some doors stay closed for a reason, son.””
At the time, I thought he meant old arguments.
Now I wondered what door he had been afraid I would open.
“What does this have to do with DNA?”” I asked.
Thomas reached into his jacket.
He pulled out a small envelope.
My hands went cold.
Not because I recognized it.
Because I recognized the look on Claire’s face.
She knew what it was.
“What?”” I asked.
She looked away.
“Claire.””
She swallowed.
“I saw one before.””
I stared at her.
“You knew about this?””
“No.””
“Then why did you look like that?””
“Because Daniel showed me something.””
I turned toward her.
“Daniel?””
She nodded.
“He found records connected to my mother.””
Thomas interrupted.
“Daniel didn’t know the whole story.””
“Apparently nobody does.””
Thomas placed the envelope on the table.
“This was hidden in your father’s office after he died.””
I stared at it.
“Why didn’t anyone give it to me?””
“Because he specifically instructed us not to.””
“Us?””
Thomas looked at Claire.
“My mother.””
Claire looked shocked.
“My mother had it?””
“Yes.””
My stomach turned.
“How long have you known?””
Claire shook her head.
“I didn’t.””
“Stop saying that.””
My voice cracked.
“I don’t know what to believe anymore.””
She looked like I had slapped her.
And maybe I had.
Not physically.
But emotionally.
Because trust doesn’t break loudly.
Sometimes it breaks in a whisper.
I picked up the envelope.
Inside was a single page.
A laboratory report.
I looked at the names.
Then froze.
The first name:
Mark Bennett.
The second:
Evelyn Carter.
I couldn’t breathe.
“No.””
Thomas watched me.
I looked at the result.
Then looked again.
The words blurred.
*Biological relationship probability: 99.98%*
My knees almost gave out.
“No.””
Claire covered her mouth.
Maya looked between us.
“Dad?””
I couldn’t answer.
Because the impossible was sitting in my hand.
Evelyn Carter.
Claire’s mother.
Was my biological mother.
The woman I had spent my entire life never knowing.
The woman everyone said disappeared.
The woman my father hid from me.
I looked at Claire.
She was crying.
Not because she was guilty.
Because she was just as destroyed.
“You’re my…”
I couldn’t finish.
Thomas did.
“She was your mother.””
The room disappeared.
The walls.
The furniture.
Everything.
All I could hear was my own heartbeat.
Then Maya walked toward me.
She wrapped her arms around my waist.
“Dad?””
I looked down.
Her eyes were full of fear.
Not about the secret.
About me.
Because she thought I was falling apart.
I hugged her.
“I’m okay.””
But I wasn’t.
Not even close.
Then Thomas said something that made me let go of my daughter.
“Mark.””
I looked at him.
“There’s something else.””
Of course there was.
There was always something else.
“What?””
He hesitated.
Then said:
“Evelyn didn’t disappear because she wanted to leave you.””
My chest tightened.
“Then why?””
May you like
Thomas looked at Claire.
“Because someone tried to erase her.””
