Amused

Chapter 8: The Night Ethan Came Home

The police moved Emily and Margaret to a safe location immediately.

But Ethan knew too much.

He knew our routines.

He knew our home.

He knew where Lily slept.

That thought alone made me sick.

I sat beside Lily’s bed that night.

She was asleep.

Finally peaceful.

Finally safe.

I watched her breathe.

And I promised myself nobody would ever make her afraid again.

At 2:17 a.m., the alarm went off.

I was already standing before I fully woke up.

The house was dark.

Too dark.

“Vanessa?””

No answer.

I grabbed my phone.

Called Detective Harris.

Then I heard it.

A sound from downstairs.

A door opening.

I walked slowly.

Every instinct screamed.

When I reached the living room, the lights turned on.

Ethan stood there.

My brother.

The person who had once held my daughter.

The person who destroyed everything.

“You always were predictable, Daniel.””

I froze.

“How did you get here?””

He smiled.

“You still ask the wrong questions.””

I stepped between him and the stairs.

“Stay away from Lily.””

His expression changed.

“You think this is about Lily?””

“Isn’t it?””

“No.””

He laughed quietly.

“This was always about you.””

I stared.

“What?””

“You had everything.””

I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.

“You’re insane.””

“No.””

His face hardened.

“You were lucky.””

I shook my head.

“You hurt a child because you were jealous?””

“Not because I was jealous.””

“Then why?””

He stepped closer.

“Because you never noticed me.””

The words were almost pathetic.

Almost.

“You were the successful one. The loved one. The one everyone trusted.””

“You were my brother.””

“And that was the problem.””

Sirens sounded in the distance.

Ethan looked toward the window.

“You called them.””

“Yes.””

He smiled.

“Good.””

Something felt wrong.

“What?””

“You’ll finally hear the rest.””

He reached into his jacket.

I moved instantly.

But he didn’t pull out a weapon.

He pulled out a recorder.

Another one.

My heart dropped.

“What is that?””

“The truth.””

I didn’t move.

The recording played.

A conversation.

My voice.

From eight years ago.

But different.

Angry.

Confused.

Then Emily’s voice.

Crying.

And Ethan.

Manipulating.

I listened.

And slowly realized something.

Ethan hadn’t just lied.

He had created situations where every person thought they were making their own choices.

Then another voice appeared.

Mine.

Saying something I never remembered.

“I can’t raise a child who isn’t mine.””

I froze.

“That’s fake.””

Ethan smiled.

“Is it?””

The recording continued.

Then Emily’s voice.

“You don’t mean that.””

My own voice answered:

“I’m sorry.””

I felt sick.

Because it sounded real.

But then I noticed something.

The background noise.

A clock.

A sound.

I recognized it.

I looked at Ethan.

“You edited it.””

His smile disappeared.

“What?””

“You combined conversations.””

For the first time, he looked nervous.

Detective Harris entered with officers.

Ethan didn’t run.

He just stared at me.

“You figured it out.””

I stepped closer.

“You thought I would believe the version of myself you created.””

The officers took him away.

But before he left, he whispered:

“This isn’t over.””

Two weeks later, the investigation revealed everything.

Ethan had forged documents.

Manipulated recordings.

Controlled people through secrets.

But there was one thing nobody understood.

Why did he do it?

The answer came from an old journal found in his apartment.

And when Detective Harris showed it to me, one sentence explained everything.

“I didn’t want Daniel’s life.””

May you like

I read the next line.

“I wanted him to lose it.””
