Chapter 2: The Secret Behind the Bruises

I didn’t sleep that night.

Neither did Lily.

After I heard the recording, every sound in the house felt different.

The refrigerator humming.

The pipes creaking.

The footsteps upstairs.

A home that had always felt safe suddenly felt like a place full of locked doors.

I sat beside Lily’s bed while she held my hand.

“Dad?””

“Yeah?””

“Are you still my dad?””

The question crushed me.

I turned toward her.

“Of course I am.””

She stared at the blanket.

“Even if I messed everything up?””

“You didn’t mess anything up.””

“But Mom said—”

She stopped.

I leaned closer.

“What did Mom say?””

Lily’s eyes filled with tears.

“She said I was making things harder for everyone.””

My hands tightened.

“What things?””

She didn’t answer.

Instead, she looked at the teddy bear.

“I was scared you would believe her.””

That hurt more than the bruises.

My daughter had been afraid her own father wouldn’t believe her.

The next morning, Vanessa tried to act normal.

She made coffee.

She packed lunches.

She moved around the kitchen pretending our world hadn’t cracked open.

I stood near the doorway.

“Vanessa.””

She stopped.

“We need to talk.””

She sighed.

“Daniel, I know how this looks.””

“How does it look?””

“Like I’m some monster.””

I stared at her.

“You tried to stop me from hearing my daughter’s recording.””

“Because she misunderstood.””

“She has bruises.””

Vanessa looked away.

“She fell.””

“Where?””

“In the backyard.””

“When?””

She hesitated.

Only for a second.

But I noticed.

“Vanessa.””

“She was playing.””

“Then why did she hide it?””

Silence.

That silence answered more than words could.

Later that day, I took Lily to the doctor.

The doctor examined her carefully.

I watched every expression.

Every pause.

Every moment she looked concerned.

Finally, she pulled me aside.

“Mr. Carter, these injuries don’t look consistent with a simple fall.””

My chest tightened.

“What are you saying?””

“I’m saying someone should investigate how they happened.””

On the drive home, Lily sat quietly in the back seat.

I looked at her through the mirror.

“Sweetheart.””

“Yes?””

“Who hurt you?””

Her fingers wrapped around her backpack strap.

“I can’t tell you.””

“Why?””

“Because he said you would get hurt.””

My blood ran cold.

“He?””

Lily nodded.

The car suddenly felt silent.

“Who is he?””

She looked out the window.

“He comes when Mom isn’t happy.””

I pulled over.

“Lily, look at me.””

She slowly turned.

“Who comes?””

Her lips trembled.

Then she whispered a name.

A name I recognized immediately.

My brother.

Ethan.

I couldn’t breathe.

My younger brother had been helping Vanessa while I was away for work.

He had been in our house.

Around my daughter.

Around my family.

That evening, Ethan arrived before I could call him.

He walked through the front door carrying a bag of groceries.

“Hey, Dan.””

I looked at him.

He smiled.

Then he saw my face.

The smile disappeared.

“What happened?””

I stepped closer.

“Why was Lily scared of you?””

His expression changed.

Only slightly.

But enough.

“I don’t know what you’re talking about.””

“You were here while I was gone.””

“Yeah.””

“You were in her room.””

He laughed nervously.

“Are you seriously accusing me because of something an eight-year-old said?””

Behind me, Lily appeared in the hallway.

Her face went white.

Ethan saw her.

And whispered:

“You shouldn’t have told him.””

I felt every muscle in my body freeze.

Because Lily wasn’t the only one who heard it.

May you like

Vanessa heard it too.

And she looked terrified.
