Amused

Chapter 7: The Mother Nobody Remembered

The next morning, I drove to the old address Detective Harris found in Ethan’s files.

I didn’t tell Vanessa.

I didn’t tell anyone.

I needed answers without another person shaping the truth.

The house was small.

Old.

The kind of place where someone could disappear without anyone noticing.

An elderly woman answered the door.

When she saw me, her expression changed.

Not surprise.

Recognition.

“Daniel?””

My heart stopped.

“You know me?””

She looked behind me.

Then whispered:

“You shouldn’t be here.””

I stepped forward.

“Who are you?””

Her eyes filled with sadness.

“My name is Margaret.””

The name meant nothing.

Until she said:

“I was your daughter’s grandmother.””

I froze.

“What?””

She opened the door wider.

“Come inside.””

The living room smelled like old books and cinnamon.

On the wall were photographs.

One photograph made me stop.

A young woman holding a baby.

My daughter.

I walked closer.

“Who is she?””

Margaret touched the frame.

“My daughter.””

My voice became quiet.

“Lily’s mother?””

She nodded.

“Emily.””

I stared at the picture.

All these years.

I had never seen her face.

“How did she die?””

Margaret looked away.

“She didn’t.””

The room went silent.

I turned.

“What?””

“She’s alive.””

My entire body went numb.

“No.””

Margaret nodded.

“Yes.””

“That’s impossible.””

“Ethan made sure you believed it.””

I stepped back.

“Where is she?””

Margaret looked at me.

“That’s why you’re here.””

“What does that mean?””

She walked to a drawer and pulled out an envelope.

“She left this for you.””

My hands shook as I opened it.

Inside was a letter.

Daniel,

If you’re reading this, Ethan failed to keep the truth buried.

I stopped.

My vision blurred.

Emily’s handwriting.

A stranger’s handwriting.

But the words felt like they were reaching through eight years.

I kept reading.

I never abandoned Lily.

I never wanted to leave.

Ethan told me you wanted nothing to do with us.

He told me you chose a different life.

I covered my mouth.

“He lied to both of us.””

Margaret nodded.

“Emily tried to find you.””

“When?””

“Many times.””

“Why didn’t she?””

“Because Ethan threatened her.””

The anger inside me became something darker.

“What did he threaten her with?””

Margaret looked down.

“Lily.””

I closed my eyes.

Again.

Lily was the weapon.

Everyone loved her.

And everyone who wanted control used that love.

“Where is Emily now?””

Margaret hesitated.

“She’s been afraid.””

“Afraid of Ethan?””

“Yes.””

I stood.

“I need to see her.””

Margaret looked at me carefully.

“Daniel, there is something you should know.””

“What?””

“Emily doesn’t know Lily is safe.””

The words hit me.

“She thinks Lily is still with Ethan?””

“She thinks Ethan took her away.””

I left immediately.

Detective Harris helped locate Emily.

She was living two hours away under a different name.

When I saw her, I forgot every speech I had prepared.

Because she looked familiar.

Not because I knew her.

Because Lily looked like her.

The same eyes.

The same expression.

Emily opened the door.

And froze.

Neither of us spoke.

Then she whispered:

“Daniel?””

I nodded.

Her hand covered her mouth.

“Oh my God.””

For a moment, we were just two people standing in the doorway of the life we lost.

Then she cried.

Not loudly.

Not dramatically.

Just quietly.

Like someone who had been holding eight years of pain alone.

“I thought you hated me.””

“I thought you left.””

We both spoke at the same time.

And that was when we realized.

Neither of us had chosen to leave.

Someone had stolen those years.

Inside her home, she showed me a box.

Letters.

Hundreds.

All addressed to me.

Never delivered.

“He intercepted them,” she said.

I looked at the pile.

“You tried to contact me?””

“Every month.””

I felt sick.

Then she pulled out one final envelope.

“This one came back.””

I opened it.

Inside was a photograph.

Not of Emily.

Not of Lily.

Of Ethan.

Standing outside my house.

Watching.

On the back was a message.

“He knows I found out.””

I looked at Emily.

“When?””

She whispered:

“Three days ago.””

My phone rang.

Detective Harris.

I answered.

“Daniel.””

“What happened?””

His voice was urgent.

“Ethan escaped custody.””

My blood turned cold.

“How?””

A pause.

Then:

“He had help.””

I looked at Emily.

And suddenly understood.

May you like

Ethan wasn’t running away.

He was coming back.
