Chapter 5: The Secret No One Expected
The next forty-eight hours changed everything.
The police increased protection around Lily.
The school was notified.
Every person near my daughter was questioned.
And I became obsessed with one thing.
Finding out who sent that message.
Because Ethan was in custody.
Which meant someone else was watching.
Someone else knew.
Detective Harris met me outside the school.
“We traced the number.””
“And?””
“It was a temporary phone.””
My stomach sank.
“But we found something else.””
He handed me a folder.
Inside was a report.
“Your brother wasn’t acting alone.””
I looked up.
“What?””
“We found financial transfers.””
“To who?””
The detective paused.
“Vanessa.””
I felt like the ground disappeared.
“No.””
“I know what it looks like.””
“You’re wrong.””
He looked at me quietly.
“You want her to be innocent.””
I didn’t answer.
Because he was right.
That evening, I confronted Vanessa.
She was sitting in Lily’s room, folding clothes.
The sight almost broke me.
She looked like a mother.
But I didn’t know if I knew the person underneath anymore.
“Why did Ethan pay you?””
Her hands stopped.
Slowly.
“What?””
“Don’t lie.””
Tears filled her eyes.
“I didn’t hurt Lily.””
“Then explain.””
She sat down.
“I took the money.””
“Why?””
“Because I was afraid.””
“Of what?””
She looked at me.
“The truth.””
I waited.
Finally, she whispered:
“Lily’s birth records were changed.””
My heart raced.
“What?””
“Ethan helped me hide something.””
“What?””
She opened a drawer and pulled out a sealed envelope.
Inside was a document.
A DNA test.
I stared at the result.
Then I read the name.
Not Ethan.
Not some stranger.
Mine.
I looked at Vanessa.
“What is this?””
She cried.
“The truth.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
“Daniel…”
“No.””
“The reason Ethan had power over me wasn’t because Lily wasn’t yours.””
I looked at her.
“Then why?””
Her voice broke.
“Because Lily was yours.””
I couldn’t understand.
“What?””
She took a deep breath.
“Before we got married, before we even met, Ethan knew you.””
The room went silent.
“He knew you had a daughter.””
I stared.
“What are you saying?””
Vanessa wiped her tears.
“Lily is your daughter.””
“I know that.””
“No.””
She shook her head.
“You don’t.””
My heart pounded.
“Explain.””
She looked toward the hallway where Lily slept.
“Eight years ago, Ethan caused the accident that separated you from Lily’s biological mother.””
I froze.
“What?””
“He knew if you found Lily, you would destroy his life.””
I couldn’t speak.
“The woman who gave birth to Lily trusted Ethan. He lied. He changed records. He made you believe Lily came into your life later.””
My mind raced through memories.
The adoption papers.
The hospital.
The timeline.
Things I never questioned.
Because I trusted people.
Then my phone rang.
Detective Harris.
I answered.
“Mr. Carter.””
“Yes?””
“We found Ethan’s hidden files.””
My grip tightened.
“What files?””
A pause.
Then:
“Everything he did for the past eight years.””
I looked at Vanessa.
“And?””
The detective’s voice became serious.
“There’s one more name in the documents.””
“Whose?””
Silence.
May you like
Then he said:
“Daniel… it’s yours.””
