Chapter 4: The Truth Buried for Eight Years

The police station smelled like old coffee and cold floors.

I sat across from Detective Harris while he placed a small evidence bag on the table.

Inside was another voice recorder.

Different from Lily’s.

Older.

Damaged.

“How did you find this?”” I asked.

Detective Harris folded his hands.

“Your daughter told us there was another one.””

I looked up.

“She knew?””

“She said she saw your brother hide it.””

My stomach twisted.

“Why didn’t she tell me?””

The detective looked at me carefully.

“Because children often protect people they love, even when those people hurt them.””

I looked down.

That sentence stayed with me.

When I returned home, Lily was sitting on the couch.

I sat beside her.

“Why didn’t you tell me about the second recorder?””

She cried immediately.

“I thought you would leave.””

“Leave?””

She nodded.

“Everyone leaves when things get bad.””

I pulled her close.

“I’m not leaving.””

She whispered:

“Promise?””

“I promise.””

That evening, we listened to the second recording.

This one was older.

Much older.

Eight years old.

The sound was unclear.

Then Ethan’s voice.

“You can’t tell him.””

A woman answered.

Vanessa.

“I know.””

I froze.

The recording continued.

“She’ll grow up and ask questions.””

“She won’t remember.””

My hands went cold.

They were talking about Lily.

Then a baby cried.

My daughter.

A newborn.

Vanessa’s voice trembled.

“I can’t do this.””

Ethan answered:

“You already did.””

I stopped the recording.

I couldn’t hear anymore.

I looked at Vanessa.

“What happened eight years ago?””

She was crying.

“Daniel…”

“What happened?””

She whispered:

“Lily isn’t Ethan’s problem.””

The room went silent.

“She’s mine.””

I stared.

“What does that mean?””

Vanessa looked at Lily.

Then at me.

“She wasn’t supposed to be born.””

The words felt impossible.

“What?””

“When I found out I was pregnant, I was terrified.””

“Why?””

“Because I had made a mistake.””

I waited.

“I was with someone else.””

My heart shattered.

But before I could speak, Vanessa continued.

“Ethan knew.””

I looked toward the floor.

“He used that against you?””

She nodded.

“He threatened to tell you.””

“And the bruises?””

“He went too far.””

“No.””

She cried.

“I know.””

The next morning, I filed for emergency custody.

Ethan was arrested that afternoon.

But before he was taken away, he looked at me.

“You think you know everything.””

I didn’t respond.

He smiled sadly.

“You don’t.””

The words bothered me.

Because people who are caught usually beg.

They don’t warn.

That night, I found Lily sitting by the window.

“What are you thinking about?””

She shrugged.

“I’m thinking about when I can stop being scared.””

I sat beside her.

“You already started.””

She looked at me.

“How?””

“Because you told the truth.””

She smiled faintly.

Then my phone buzzed.

A message from an unknown number.

One sentence.

One picture.

My blood turned cold.

The picture showed Lily at school.

Taken that same day.

May you like

The message said:

“You arrested the wrong person.””
