Chapter 7: The Truth Behind The Betrayal
Amelia stood in the doorway, soaked from the rain, her face pale and exhausted.
For a moment, nobody spoke.
The three of us simply stared at each other.
The sister who knew my secrets.
The husband who lost three years of my life.
And me.
The woman who had spent years believing she understood both of them.
The hotel room felt smaller than it had before.
Amelia slowly stepped inside.
“Lisa…”
I lifted my hand.
“No.””
She stopped.
The pain in her eyes was obvious.
But I had learned something tonight.
Pain did not always mean innocence.
“Don’t say my name like nothing happened.””
Her lips trembled.
“I know.””
“No, you don’t.””
My voice was quiet.
Almost calm.
And somehow that made everything worse.
“You don’t know what it feels like to look at someone you trusted and realize you never really knew them.””
Amelia looked down.
“I deserve that.””
Marcus stood between us.
“Why are you here?””
Amelia looked at him.
“Because you finally told her.””
Marcus’s expression hardened.
“Not everything.””
“Then tell her.””
The room went silent.
I looked between them.
“What does that mean?””
Neither answered.
My patience disappeared.
“No more.””
I stepped forward.
“No more conversations where two people exchange looks and I’m the only one who doesn’t understand.””
Amelia wiped a tear from her cheek.
“You’re right.””
She took a breath.
“I owe you the truth.””
I crossed my arms.
“Then start.””
Amelia looked at Marcus.
Then back at me.
“The night Marcus left, he didn’t come to say goodbye.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“He came to save you.””
I looked at Marcus.
He didn’t deny it.
Amelia continued.
“He had already arranged everything. A place for you to stay. Money transferred into an account. Documents prepared.””
My heart tightened.
“What documents?””
“Emergency documents. A new phone number. A way for you to disappear if you needed to.””
I stared at Marcus.
“You planned for me to leave?””
“Yes.””
“Without telling me?””
His eyes lowered.
“Yes.””
The anger returned.
“Why?””
“Because Daniel was watching you.””
Amelia stepped closer.
“Lisa, you have to understand something. Daniel wasn’t just threatening Marcus.””
She paused.
“He was obsessed with controlling him.””
I felt uncomfortable.
“Why?””
“Because Marcus had something Daniel wanted.””
“The evidence.””
Amelia nodded.
“But it wasn’t just about money.””
“What else?””
She looked at Marcus.
Marcus answered.
“Daniel was afraid the evidence would reveal what he had done years earlier.””
I waited.
Then he said the words I never expected.
“Your father’s death.””
Everything stopped.
My father.
The man who raised us.
The man whose death had always been called an accident.
I stared at Marcus.
“What does my father have to do with this?””
Amelia’s face changed.
She looked like she had been carrying this moment for years.
“Lisa…”
“No.””
I shook my head.
“Don’t hesitate.””
She swallowed.
“Your father didn’t die because of a random accident.””
My hands became cold.
“What are you saying?””
Marcus moved closer.
“Daniel was involved.””
The room was silent.
I laughed softly.
Not because it was funny.
Because my mind couldn’t accept it.
“My father died seven years ago.””
“I know.””
“And you’re telling me Daniel caused it?””
Marcus nodded.
“Yes.””
I looked at Amelia.
“You knew?””
She started crying.
“Yes.””
The answer hurt more than I expected.
“You knew?””
“I found out after Marcus did.””
“And you never told me?””
“I was trying to protect you.””
I closed my eyes.
There it was again.
The same excuse.
The same words.
Always protection.
Always secrets.
“You all decided I was too weak for the truth.””
Amelia shook her head.
“No.””
“Then what?””
“You were the strongest person I knew.””
Her voice broke.
“That was why I was scared.””
I looked at her.
“Scared of what?””
“That you would go after the truth.””
A bitter smile crossed my face.
“And?””
“And Daniel would come after you.””
I looked away.
Because a small part of me understood.
Not accepted.
Not forgiven.
But understood.
Marcus sat down.
His exhaustion finally visible.
“Daniel didn’t just destroy companies. He destroyed people.””
I listened.
“Your father discovered his illegal activities years ago.””
“My father knew?””
“Yes.””
“He was going to expose him.””
“Yes.””
“And Daniel stopped him.””
Marcus nodded.
The room felt colder.
“Why did nobody tell me?””
Amelia answered softly.
“Because your father wanted us to hide it.””
I looked at her.
“What?””
“He knew Daniel was dangerous. Before he died, he told me and Marcus that if anything happened to him, we had to protect you.””
I stared.
“You and Marcus were working together?””
“Not at first.””
Amelia looked at Marcus.
“But after your father died, Marcus started investigating.””
“And you helped him.””
“Yes.””
The truth kept getting bigger.
Every answer created another question.
“So why did you let me hate him?””
Amelia closed her eyes.
“Because Daniel knew you loved Marcus.””
I didn’t understand.
“So?””
“So Daniel knew hurting Marcus meant hurting you.””
My breath slowed.
“He wanted me to leave Marcus?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because he believed you were Marcus’s weakness.””
The word hurt.
Weakness.
But Marcus immediately spoke.
“You were never my weakness.””
I looked at him.
“You were the reason I survived.””
For a moment, I forgot to be angry.
Because I believed him.
That was the problem.
I still believed him.
Amelia reached into her coat pocket.
She pulled out a small flash drive.
My eyes moved to it.
“What is that?””
“The evidence.””
Marcus stood immediately.
“Amelia.””
“I can’t hide it anymore.””
She looked at me.
“I should have given this to you years ago.””
Marcus stepped forward.
“If Daniel gets this—”
“He already knows I have it.””
Marcus froze.
“What?””
Amelia looked terrified.
“He found me.””
My stomach tightened.
“When?””
“Yesterday.””
Silence.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because I was trying to figure out what to do.””
Marcus’s face changed.
“You should have come to me.””
“I was afraid.””
“And you came here?””
She looked at me.
“Because I realized something.””
“What?””
“You were never safe because of Marcus.””
A chill moved through me.
“Then why?””
Amelia looked at the flash drive.
“Because Daniel doesn’t want the evidence anymore.””
Marcus frowned.
“What does he want?””
Amelia looked at my stomach.
My heart stopped.
“No.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“He wants the child.””
The room went silent.
My hand immediately moved over my stomach.
Marcus’s face changed completely.
“Why?””
Amelia whispered:
“Because the baby is connected to something Daniel never knew existed.””
I stared at her.
“What are you talking about?””
She looked at Marcus.
Then at me.
“Your father left something behind.””
My heartbeat increased.
“Something that Daniel has been searching for for seven years.””
“What?””
Amelia’s voice became barely audible.
“Something hidden in the hospital records from the day you were born.””
I frowned.
“What does that have to do with my baby?””
She took a deep breath.
“Because Daniel believes the information was passed down to your child.””
“That’s impossible.””
“I thought so too.””
Marcus stepped closer.
“Amelia, tell us the whole truth.””
She looked at him.
“I don’t know the whole truth.””
The answer shocked us.
“Then who does?””
Amelia looked toward the window.
Her face drained of color.
“Daniel.””
At that exact moment, every phone in the room buzzed.
Mine.
Marcus’s.
Amelia’s.
Three screens.
Three identical messages.
From an unknown number.
I opened mine.
Only one sentence appeared.
I know you found the evidence.
A second message arrived.
Then another.
This one made Marcus step back.
You have until midnight to bring me my daughter’s information.
I stared at the screen.
My daughter?
My breathing stopped.
Because I had never told Daniel about my baby.
Nobody had.
Nobody except…
Amelia.
Marcus looked at my phone.
Then at Amelia.
The question on his face was clear.
But before he could ask it, another message appeared.
This time, it wasn’t a threat.
It was a name.
A name that changed everything.
Because Daniel wasn’t asking for information about my baby.
He was claiming something.
May you like
The message read:
*Bring me my granddaughter.*
