Amused

Chapter 3: The Secret My Sister Hid

The photograph slipped from the stranger’s fingers and landed on the wet pavement between us.

For a few seconds, nobody moved.

Not Marcus.

Not me.

Not even the man who had clearly come here to destroy whatever fragile peace remained between us.

Rain fell onto the photograph, blurring the image slowly.

But I had already seen enough.

I knew the face.

I knew the smile.

I knew the woman standing beside Marcus.

My sister.

Amelia.

The person I trusted more than anyone in the world.

The person who held my hand when Marcus left.

The person who sat beside me while I cried.

The person who told me, “You deserve better than someone who walks away.””

My stomach tightened.

“No,” I whispered.

Marcus looked at me.

“Lisa…”

I raised my hand.

I didn’t want him to say my name.

Not then.

Not when the person standing beside him was someone who shared my blood.

The stranger picked up the photograph and wiped the rain from it with his sleeve.

“Three years ago,” he said calmly, “your husband disappeared because he was trying to protect you from something you never knew existed.””

I looked at Marcus.

“My husband?””

The word sounded strange.

Because technically, he had been my husband.

But emotionally?

He had become a stranger long before tonight.

The man in the suit looked at Marcus.

“Tell her.””

Marcus’s jaw tightened.

“Leave.””

The stranger laughed quietly.

“You still think you can control the situation?””

Marcus stepped forward.

“I said leave.””

For the first time, I saw something I had never seen before.

Not anger.

Not sadness.

Fear.

Real fear.

I turned toward him.

“What is going on?””

He didn’t answer.

That hurt more than anything.

Because silence was what destroyed us the first time.

And now he was doing it again.

“Marcus.””

My voice cracked slightly.

“Look at me.””

He did.

I saw regret in his eyes.

“I wanted to tell you.””

“When?””

He looked away.

“After I fixed everything.””

I shook my head.

“That was your plan?””

The rain soaked through my jacket.

“You were going to come back after three years and just explain everything?””

“I thought I could handle it.””

“You thought?””

My voice became louder.

“You thought you could decide when I deserved the truth?””

Marcus flinched.

The stranger watched quietly.

Almost like he wanted this reaction.

And maybe he did.

Because he knew exactly where to hurt us.

I pointed at the photograph.

“Why is my sister with you?””

Marcus closed his eyes.

For a moment, he looked exhausted.

Like he had been carrying something too heavy for too long.

Then he finally spoke.

“Because Amelia knew everything.””

My heart stopped.

“Everything about what?””

He looked at me.

“About the threats.””

I stared at him.

“What threats?””

Marcus took a breath.

Three years of silence were finally breaking.

But the truth was not coming out gently.

It was tearing its way through.

“When I was promoted, I discovered something wrong inside the company.””

I listened.

The rain became background noise.

“My boss was hiding financial information. Millions of dollars were being moved through accounts that weren’t supposed to exist.””

The stranger crossed his arms.

“Marcus found evidence.””

Marcus continued.

“And someone found out I had it.””

I remembered those nights.

The late phone calls.

The locked office door.

The way he checked outside our apartment before leaving.

The way he stopped sleeping.

“You never told me,” I said.

“I tried.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You didn’t.””

His eyes filled with pain.

“I was going to.””

“When?””

“Before everything happened.””

I laughed bitterly.

“Everything happened because you kept me in the dark.””

He looked down.

I wanted to hate him.

It would have been easier.

But seeing him standing there, broken and afraid, only made everything more complicated.

The stranger looked at me.

“Your sister was the one who convinced him to disappear.””

I turned toward him.

“What?””

Marcus immediately looked angry.

“Don’t.””

But it was too late.

The words were already spoken.

The stranger continued.

“She told him that if he stayed, you would become a target.””

My hands became cold.

I looked at Marcus.

“Is that true?””

He didn’t answer immediately.

That was enough.

“Marcus.””

His shoulders lowered.

“Yes.””

The world seemed to become strangely quiet.

“My sister told you to leave me?””

“She was trying to protect you.””

I stared at him.

“Protect me?””

My voice trembled.

“She took my husband away from me and called that protection?””

Marcus stepped closer.

“Lisa, listen.””

“No.””

I stepped back.

“I spent three years believing you stopped loving me.””

His expression broke.

“I never stopped.””

“I thought I wasn’t enough.””

“You were everything.””

“Then why did you leave?””

The question hung in the air.

The one question that had followed me every day.

Marcus opened his mouth.

But before he could answer, the stranger’s phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

His face changed.

Then he looked at Marcus.

“They know you’re here.””

Marcus immediately turned toward me.

“We need to go.””

I frowned.

“Who is ‘they’?””

No answer.

Again.

Always no answer.

I grabbed his arm.

“No. You don’t get to do that anymore.””

Marcus looked at my hand holding him.

Then at my face.

“You need to understand something.””

“What?””

“If they know you’re pregnant…”

He stopped.

My blood ran cold.

The stranger looked between us.

“You didn’t tell him?””

Marcus stared at me.

The question in his eyes was immediate.

“Lisa?””

I said nothing.

Because suddenly, the thing I had hidden for three years was standing in front of me.

The father of my child.

The man who had missed every appointment.

Every heartbeat.

Every moment.

“You’re pregnant,” Marcus whispered.

I looked away.

“Yes.””

His face changed completely.

Not happiness.

Not anger.

Pain.

Like someone had shown him all the years he lost in one second.

“How far along?””

“That doesn’t matter.””

“It matters to me.””

I laughed softly.

“Does it?””

He looked hurt.

“Lisa…”

“No.””

I stepped away.

“You don’t get to come back and act like you missed something you chose to miss.””

The words hit him.

Because they were true.

The stranger watched us silently.

Then he said something that made both of us freeze.

“The baby is exactly why you were never supposed to find her.””

Marcus looked at him.

“What did you say?””

The stranger’s expression remained cold.

“The people who wanted you silent three years ago didn’t just want your evidence.””

A pause.

“They wanted your family.””

My heart started racing.

“What does that mean?””

The stranger looked directly at me.

“It means your pregnancy wasn’t a coincidence.””

The world stopped.

Marcus immediately moved closer.

“Explain.””

The man pulled another document from his folder.

A medical report.

My name was printed at the top.

I recognized it.

It was from the hospital where I discovered I was pregnant.

But something was different.

A note had been added.

A handwritten note.

Marcus saw it too.

His face turned pale.

“No…”

I looked between them.

“What?””

Marcus took the paper.

His hands were shaking.

Then he whispered the words that made my entire body freeze.

“Someone knew about the baby before I did.””

I stared at him.

Impossible.

Only a few people knew.

The doctor.

Me.

And Amelia.

My sister.

The stranger looked at me.

“Lisa, there is something else you need to know.””

My chest tightened.

“What?””

He lowered his voice.

“Your sister didn’t just help Marcus disappear.””

A pause.

“She was the person who told them where to find you.””

The rain continued falling.

But I couldn’t feel it anymore.

May you like

Because suddenly, the person I thought had saved me…

might have been the person who destroyed my life.
