Chapter 6: The Night Everything Changed
I stared at the picture until my eyes burned.
I wanted to look away.
I wanted to believe it was fake.
A trick.
A carefully edited image designed to destroy whatever trust I had left.
But deep down, I knew.
The woman in the picture was me.
The apartment entrance behind me was mine.
The blue coat I wore belonged to me.
And the man standing beside me…
Was Daniel.
The same Daniel who everyone said disappeared.
The same Daniel who had just called me after three years of silence.
The same Daniel who claimed he knew what happened the night Marcus left.
My fingers tightened around my phone.
“What is this?””
Marcus looked at the screen.
The second he saw the picture, his entire expression changed.
Not confusion.
Not surprise.
Recognition.
“You’ve seen this before.””
It wasn’t a question.
I looked at him.
“You knew.””
His silence answered for him.
My chest tightened.
“How many secrets are there, Marcus?””
“Lisa…”
“No.””
I stepped away.
“I’m done hearing half-truths.””
He reached toward me.
I moved back.
The pain on his face was real.
But I couldn’t let that distract me anymore.
Because for three years, I trusted my own memories.
And now I wasn’t even sure those were mine.
My phone rang.
Amelia.
Again.
I stared at the name.
Then answered.
“Why did you send me that picture?””
Silence.
Then her voice.
“Because you deserve to know.””
My laugh was quiet.
“You had three years to tell me.””
“I know.””
“You knew everything.””
“I know.””
“You watched me cry over him.””
Her breathing became shaky.
“I know.””
My eyes filled.
“Why?””
A long pause.
Then Amelia said something I never expected.
“Because I was afraid.””
I frowned.
“Afraid of what?””
“Of Daniel.””
Marcus immediately looked at me.
I noticed.
He knew that name still carried fear.
“Then why were you working with him?””
Amelia’s voice cracked.
“I wasn’t.””
I looked at the picture.
“You were standing beside him.””
“That wasn’t what it looked like.””
I closed my eyes.
Everyone had an explanation.
Everyone had a reason.
But somehow, I was always the last person to know.
“Amelia, tell me the truth.””
“I am.””
“Then start with that night.””
Silence.
The kind of silence that comes before someone admits something they have buried for years.
Finally, she spoke.
“Marcus came to me three days before he left.””
I looked at Marcus.
He lowered his eyes.
“He asked me to help him.””
“Help him do what?””
“Disappear.””
The word hit me.
Disappear.
Like he had vanished from my life.
Like I was nothing but a chapter he closed.
“Why would you help him?””
“Because Daniel threatened you.””
I gripped the phone tighter.
“What?””
Amelia continued.
“Daniel knew Marcus had the evidence. He knew Marcus was planning to expose him.””
“Then why didn’t Marcus tell me?””
Her voice softened.
“Because Daniel didn’t threaten Marcus.””
A pause.
“He threatened you.””
I looked at Marcus.
He looked away.
My heart sank.
“What did he say?””
Amelia’s voice became quieter.
“He said if Marcus stayed with you, the baby wouldn’t be safe.””
The hallway disappeared.
The word baby echoed.
Three years ago, nobody knew.
Nobody except Amelia.
Except the people I trusted.
I swallowed.
“How did Daniel know I was pregnant?””
No answer.
“Amelia.””
Her voice broke.
“Because I told him.””
The phone nearly slipped from my hand.
Marcus immediately stepped forward.
I didn’t even realize I had stopped breathing.
“You what?””
“I didn’t know what he would do.””
“You told him?””
“I thought I could control the situation.””
My anger rose.
“You thought?””
“I was trying to protect you.””
“Everyone keeps saying that!””
My voice echoed through the hallway.
Guests at the end of the corridor turned briefly before continuing walking.
I didn’t care.
“You all keep hurting me and calling it protection.””
Amelia cried softly.
“I’m sorry.””
That word.
Sorry.
It was everywhere.
But sorry did not return years.
Sorry did not erase nights spent alone.
Sorry did not bring back the moments Marcus missed.
I ended the call.
I couldn’t hear more.
Not yet.
Marcus stood quietly.
Then he said:
“She told you.””
I looked at him.
“You knew she told him.””
“Yes.””
“And you still let me believe she was protecting me?””
“I thought she was.””
I stared at him.
“You thought?””
He looked ashamed.
“I didn’t know the whole story.””
“That’s your excuse?””
“No.””
His voice became softer.
“It’s my failure.””
The honesty surprised me.
But it didn’t fix the pain.
I walked into my hotel room and placed my phone on the table.
Marcus followed slowly.
Not too close.
Like he was afraid I would disappear.
The irony almost made me laugh.
Three years ago, he disappeared.
Now he was afraid I would.
“Tell me everything,” I said.
He nodded.
And for the first time that night, he stopped trying to protect me from the truth.
“The night I left, Daniel sent me a video.””
“A video?””
“Yes.””
“Of what?””
Marcus looked toward the window.
His reflection stared back at him.
“Of him watching our apartment.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“He was watching us?””
“Yes.””
“How long?””
“Weeks.””
I covered my mouth.
“He knew your routine.””
My voice became quiet.
“He knew when I left for work.””
“Yes.””
“When I came home.””
“Yes.””
“When I was alone.””
Marcus nodded.
My stomach twisted.
“What happened after that?””
“He told me to choose.””
“Choose?””
“Leave you and disappear, or stay and watch everything happen.””
I stared at him.
“Why didn’t you tell the police?””
His face changed.
“Because Daniel had people inside.””
“Inside where?””
“The police department.””
The room became silent.
I looked at him.
“Is that true?””
“I don’t know how many people were involved. But every time I tried to get help, Daniel knew before I could act.””
I sat down.
Suddenly, three years of confusion started forming a different picture.
The late nights.
The fear.
The distance.
The goodbye that never made sense.
Marcus sat across from me.
“I planned to come back.””
I looked at him.
“When?””
“When it was safe.””
“And was it?””
He looked at my stomach.
“No.””
I followed his eyes.
The baby.
The child he never knew.
The child he had missed.
“What happened to the evidence?””
Marcus hesitated.
“Amelia hid it.””
“Where?””
“She won’t tell me.””
“Why?””
“Because she’s afraid.””
I shook my head.
“Everyone is afraid.””
Marcus looked at me.
“You should be too.””
I stared at him.
“Are you saying I’m in danger?””
Before he could answer, the lights in the room suddenly went out.
Darkness swallowed everything.
My breath caught.
The hotel hallway outside went silent.
Then came a sound.
A soft click.
The sound of the door lock.
My eyes moved toward the entrance.
Someone had opened the door.
Marcus immediately stood.
“Stay behind me.””
A shadow appeared beneath the door.
Someone was standing outside.
Waiting.
Marcus whispered:
“Lisa…”
I looked at him.
His face had lost all color.
Because he recognized the person outside.
The door handle slowly began to turn.
Then a voice came through the door.
A voice I knew.
A voice I never expected to hear here.
“Marcus.””
My blood froze.
“Open the door.””
A pause.
Then:
“We need to talk about the child.””
May you like
The door opened.
And standing there was Amelia.
