Amused

Chapter 5: The Voice From The Past

The phone slipped from my hand.

For a moment, I couldn’t move.

The call had ended, but the voice remained.

Echoing.

Haunting.

Impossible.

Because I knew that voice.

I had not heard it in years.

But some sounds never leave you.

Some voices are carved into your memory.

“Lisa.””

Marcus’s voice pulled me back.

I looked at him.

His face was pale.

Not confused.

Not surprised.

Terrified.

That scared me more than the call itself.

“You know who that was,” I whispered.

Marcus didn’t answer.

My heart sank.

“Marcus.””

He looked away.

“Tell me.””

The rain continued falling, but now it felt like the entire city had disappeared around us.

Only the three of us remained.

Me.

Marcus.

And the truth we had spent years running from.

The stranger stepped closer.

“Who was it?””

Marcus stared at the ground.

Then quietly said:

“Daniel.””

The name meant nothing to the stranger.

But it meant everything to me.

Daniel.

My father’s former business partner.

A man who had been part of our family gatherings for years.

A man who disappeared after a company scandal three years ago.

A man everyone believed had fled the country.

A man who was supposed to be gone.

I looked at Marcus.

“Daniel is alive?””

He nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

The word felt unreal.

“Why did everyone think he was gone?””

Marcus took a deep breath.

“Because that’s what he wanted people to believe.””

I felt anger rising.

“You knew?””

“Yes.””

“You knew he was alive, and you never told me?””

Marcus closed his eyes.

“I was trying to keep you away from him.””

I laughed.

A broken, empty sound.

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

I looked between Marcus and the stranger.

“You’re all protecting me by lying to me.””

Nobody spoke.

“Do you realize how crazy that sounds?””

Marcus stepped closer.

“I know.””

“No, you don’t.””

My voice shook.

“You don’t know what it feels like to wake up every morning wondering why the person you loved chose to leave.””

His expression changed.

“You don’t know what it feels like to tell your unborn child one day that their father didn’t stay.””

Marcus looked down.

Pain crossed his face.

Because he had never heard those words before.

I continued.

“And now I find out you weren’t gone because you didn’t care.””

I looked at him.

“You were gone because everyone around me decided I couldn’t handle the truth.””

The stranger interrupted quietly.

“She deserves to know everything.””

Marcus looked at him.

“Not like this.””

“Then when?””

The stranger pointed toward the hotel.

“When someone else finds her first?””

Marcus said nothing.

Because that was the answer.

Someone else was already searching for me.

I walked back into the hotel.

My legs felt weak.

I didn’t want to be outside anymore.

I didn’t want strangers watching.

I didn’t want rain covering tears I didn’t want anyone to see.

The hotel lobby was warm and bright.

A complete contrast to the storm outside.

Guests walked past us, unaware that my entire world had changed.

Marcus followed.

“Lisa.””

I stopped near the elevator.

“What?””

His voice became softer.

“I’m sorry.””

I stared at the elevator doors.

Three years ago, I would have waited for those words.

I would have dreamed about hearing them.

But now?

They felt too late.

“I believe you’re sorry.””

He looked surprised.

“But that doesn’t fix anything.””

The elevator doors opened.

I stepped inside.

Marcus followed.

The stranger stopped outside.

“I’ll give you both privacy.””

The doors began closing.

But before they shut completely, he said:

“Be careful who you trust.””

Then the doors closed.

Leaving Marcus and me alone.

The silence was uncomfortable.

Heavy.

Finally, Marcus spoke.

“Daniel was the reason I left.””

I looked at him.

“Start from the beginning.””

He nodded.

The elevator moved upward.

“After my promotion, I discovered that Daniel was working with someone inside the company.””

“Your company?””

“Yes.””

“To steal money?””

“Yes.””

“And you found proof?””

“I did.””

He looked at his hands.

“I copied files. Documents. Records.””

“Why?””

“Because I wanted to expose him.””

I almost smiled.

“That sounds like the Marcus I knew.””

His eyes lifted.

For a second, there was warmth.

Then it disappeared.

“Daniel found out.””

The elevator stopped on our floor.

We stepped out.

The hallway was empty.

“Then what happened?””

Marcus looked toward my hotel room.

“Someone broke into our apartment.””

I froze.

I remembered.

That night.

The night he left.

I had thought he was acting strange because of work.

But there was more.

“What did they do?””

“They searched everything.””

I looked at him.

“Our apartment?””

He nodded.

“They were looking for the files.””

My breathing slowed.

“Did they find them?””

“No.””

“Then why leave?””

Marcus stopped walking.

“Because they found something else.””

“What?””

He looked at me.

“You.””

The answer made my stomach tighten.

“What does that mean?””

“That night, Daniel sent me a message.””

Marcus pulled out his phone.

His fingers moved through old files.

Then he showed me a screenshot.

A message from three years ago.

One sentence.

We know where your wife sleeps.

I stared at the screen.

The hallway suddenly felt colder.

“You never told me.””

“I couldn’t.””

“You could have warned me.””

“I did.””

“When?””

“I told you we needed to leave.””

I shook my head.

“No. You told me nothing.””

His eyes filled with regret.

“I was scared.””

The honesty surprised me.

Marcus had always been the person who looked strong.

Even when things were falling apart.

Even when he was afraid.

He pretended not to be.

“I thought if I told you the truth, you would panic.””

“I was your wife.””

“I know.””

“You were supposed to trust me.””

He looked down.

“I did.””

“Then why?””

“Because I couldn’t risk losing you.””

I stared at him.

“But you lost me anyway.””

The words hit harder than anything else.

Marcus closed his eyes.

“Yes.””

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then I asked:

“What does Daniel want now?””

Marcus looked at me.

“I don’t know.””

“You’re lying.””

He hesitated.

That hesitation told me everything.

“What?””

Marcus looked toward the hallway camera.

Then lowered his voice.

“He wants the evidence.””

“What evidence?””

“The evidence I hid before I disappeared.””

I frowned.

“You still have it?””

He nodded.

“Yes.””

“Where?””

His expression changed.

And I knew immediately.

He wasn’t going to tell me.

“Marcus.””

He looked away.

“Where?””

Finally, he whispered:

“With someone I trusted.””

I waited.

“And who is that?””

His face became serious.

“Your sister.””

My heart sank.

Again.

“Amelia has the evidence?””

“Yes.””

I stepped back.

“No.””

“Lisa—”

“No.””

I shook my head.

“She has been hiding everything.””

“I know.””

“How can you know she didn’t destroy it?””

“Because she contacted me two months ago.””

I froze.

“What?””

Marcus looked at me.

“She said she made a mistake.””

The hallway suddenly felt too narrow.

“What mistake?””

Marcus didn’t answer.

“Marcus.””

He took a breath.

“She said she was the reason Daniel found out about you.””

My eyes widened.

“But she said she was protecting me.””

“She thought she was.””

“How?””

Marcus looked at me.

“Because Amelia made a deal.””

My heart started racing.

“A deal with who?””

He didn’t speak.

I already knew.

“Daniel?””

Marcus nodded.

I felt sick.

My own sister.

The person who raised me after our mother died.

The person who held my baby pictures.

The person who knew my fears.

A deal.

With the man who destroyed my marriage.

Then my phone buzzed.

A message appeared.

From Amelia.

One sentence.

Lisa, please don’t believe everything Marcus tells you.

I stared at the screen.

Another message arrived.

I need to tell you the truth before he does.

My hands trembled.

Then a third message appeared.

This one changed everything.

Because Amelia didn’t send words.

She sent a picture.

A picture taken three years ago.

On the night Marcus left.

And in the background of the image…

I saw myself.

Standing outside our apartment.

Holding a suitcase.

Not Marcus’s suitcase.

Mine.

And beside me was someone I never expected.

May you like

Someone who had been missing for three years.

Daniel.
