Chapter 9: The Evidence That Ended Everything

The police report was waiting the next morning.

Jason sat in the station with Evelyn beside him.

Sophie sat between them.

The officer placed a folder on the table.

“We recovered deleted files from Monica’s computer.””

Jason opened it.

Inside were messages.

Plans.

Emails.

Everything.

Monica had not simply wanted Evelyn gone.

She had built an entire fake narrative.

The messages showed conversations with Ryan.

With a private care consultant.

With neighbors.

She had planned every step.

“She was trying to convince everyone your mother was incapable,” the officer explained.

Jason nodded.

“But why?””

The officer looked at the file.

“Because once she was declared unable to manage her affairs, someone else could request control.””

Jason felt cold.

“They wanted guardianship.””

“Yes.””

Not just the house.

Control of everything.

Evelyn looked down.

“I trusted her.””

Jason took her hand.

“She fooled us.””

But the officer wasn’t finished.

“There’s more.””

He placed another document down.

“This was found in Monica’s files.””

Jason read it.

His face changed.

A property transfer agreement.

But it wasn’t signed.

Because Monica had planned to transfer the house after removing Evelyn.

She had even prepared a buyer.

Someone connected to Ryan.

The entire thing was ready.

Except for one thing.

They had failed.

Because Sophie had seen the truth.

When they returned home, Monica was waiting outside.

Jason stepped out of the car.

“It’s over.””

She stared.

“You went to the police?””

“Yes.””

Her face changed.

“You would do that to me?””

Jason looked at her.

“No.””

He shook his head.

“You did this to yourself.””

She began crying.

Real tears.

But Jason no longer reacted.

“Jason, I was scared.””

“Scared of what?””

“Of losing everything.””

He looked at the house.

“You almost made my mother lose everything.””

Monica whispered:

“I thought I deserved more.””

Jason answered quietly:

“You thought everyone else deserved less.””

She had no response.

Later that evening, Evelyn sat on the porch.

The same porch where she had watched Jason grow up.

Laura joined her.

“I’m sorry.””

Evelyn looked surprised.

“For what?””

“For leaving you alone with this.””

Evelyn smiled.

“You were a child.””

Laura looked at the house.

“I missed so much.””

“Yes.””

Evelyn reached for her hand.

“But we can’t change yesterday.””

Inside, Sophie hung a new picture on the wall.

It was a drawing of the family.

Not perfect.

Not complete.

But together.

Jason watched from the doorway.

For the first time in weeks, the house felt peaceful.

Then Laura walked in holding one final letter.

“There’s something else.””

Jason sighed.

“Of course there is.””

She smiled.

“This one is from Arthur.””

He opened it.

Only a few words were written.

“Protect the person who protects others.””

Jason looked at Sophie.

Then Evelyn.

And finally the house.

The answer was obvious.

The next morning, Jason made one final decision.

A decision that would change the future of the home forever.
