Chapter 3: The Hidden Partner
Jason kept staring at the signature.
He didn’t want to believe it.
But the handwriting was unmistakable.
The person who had helped Monica create the plan wasn’t a stranger.
It was his own brother.
Ryan.
For years, Ryan had complained about money.
About not getting enough.
About how “everything always went to Jason.””
But Jason never thought he would go this far.
When Monica came home that evening, she found Jason sitting at the kitchen table.
The papers were spread in front of him.
Her face changed instantly.
“You went through my office.””
Jason looked up.
“You lied to me.””
“I did not.””
“You created a story that my mother was losing her mind.””
Monica crossed her arms.
“Because she is getting older.””
“That isn’t what I asked.””
She looked at the documents.
Then she looked away.
Jason stood.
“Why is Ryan’s name here?””
For the first time, Monica looked genuinely nervous.
“Jason…”
“No.””
His voice was firm.
“Answer me.””
She stayed silent.
And silence was an answer.
Evelyn entered the room slowly.
She had heard enough.
“I knew something was wrong.””
Jason turned.
“Mom?””
She sat down.
“I didn’t know what. But things kept disappearing.””
“What things?””
“My jewelry.””
Jason frowned.
“What jewelry?””
“The necklace your father gave me.””
Monica immediately spoke.
“You misplaced it.””
Evelyn looked at her.
“No.””
The room became quiet.
“I remember where I put it.””
Jason looked at Monica.
“Where is it?””
She didn’t answer.
Sophie appeared in the doorway.
“I know.””
Everyone looked at her.
Jason sighed.
“Sophie…”
“It’s in Monica’s closet.””
Monica’s face turned red.
“Enough.””
But Sophie kept going.
“I saw it when I was looking for Grandma’s medicine.””
Jason walked upstairs.
Monica followed.
“Jason, don’t do this.””
He opened the closet.
Inside a small box behind some clothes sat the necklace.
Evelyn covered her mouth.
Jason picked it up.
“Why?””
Monica’s eyes filled with tears.
Not fake tears this time.
Real frustration.
“Because I was tired!””
Nobody moved.
She continued.
“I was tired of everything revolving around your mother.””
Evelyn looked hurt.
“I never asked you to love me.””
Monica laughed bitterly.
“You didn’t have to.””
Jason stared at his wife.
“You tried to make her look incapable.””
“I tried to solve a problem.””
“No.””
He shook his head.
“You tried to create one.””
The next morning, Jason called Ryan.
His brother arrived two hours later.
He walked into the house smiling.
“What’s going on?””
Jason placed the papers on the table.
Ryan’s smile disappeared.
“Where did you get these?””
Jason laughed quietly.
“That’s your first question?””
Ryan looked at Monica.
Then back at Jason.
“Listen…”
“No.””
Jason pointed toward the papers.
“You planned this.””
Ryan sighed.
“Jason, be realistic.””
“Realistic?””
“Yes. Mom won’t live forever.””
Evelyn stood nearby.
Her face changed.
Jason stepped forward.
“You’re talking about her like she’s an obstacle.””
Ryan shrugged.
“The house is worth a lot.””
There it was.
The truth.
Not hidden.
Not disguised.
Just spoken.
Sophie moved closer to her grandmother.
Jason felt something break inside him.
All these years, he thought family meant protection.
But some people saw family as opportunity.
That night, Jason reviewed every document.
Then he found the biggest mistake Monica and Ryan had made.
A property record.
A deed.
Something they apparently never bothered checking.
He read the name listed as owner.
And his eyes widened.
Because the house they planned to sell…
The house they planned to take from Evelyn…
May you like
Was protected by a legal agreement neither of them knew existed.
And the person who created it had left one final instruction.
