Chapter 4: The House That Was Never Theirs

Jason barely slept.

The words on the property document stayed in his mind.

The house was not his.

It was not Monica’s.

It belonged to Evelyn.

Not just because of the deed.

Because of a trust created years earlier by his father.

A trust designed to protect his mother for the rest of her life.

His father had known something Jason had forgotten.

People change when money appears.

The next morning, Jason took Evelyn to the lawyer’s office.

Sophie came with them.

She held her grandmother’s hand the entire drive.

Inside the office, Evelyn looked nervous.

“I don’t want a fight.””

Jason looked at her.

“Mom.””

She looked out the window.

“I spent my whole life avoiding conflict.””

He smiled sadly.

“And people used that.””

She didn’t answer.

The lawyer, Mr. Bennett, opened the file.

“I’m glad you came.””

Jason frowned.

“You knew something was wrong?””

The lawyer nodded.

“Your father asked me to watch for any unusual activity.””

Evelyn looked surprised.

“Arthur never told me.””

“He wanted you to live peacefully.””

Mr. Bennett opened the document.

“The house was placed in a protected trust. Evelyn has complete authority over residence decisions.””

Jason exhaled.

“So Monica and Ryan couldn’t sell it.””

“No.””

The lawyer looked serious.

“They couldn’t force her out either.””

Evelyn closed her eyes.

A tear fell.

Not from sadness.

From relief.

But Jason wasn’t done.

“What about the assisted living papers?””

Mr. Bennett examined them.

“These are not official.””

“They aren’t?””

“No.””

He looked closer.

“They appear designed to create a false record.””

Jason felt sick.

“A false record of what?””

“That Evelyn was incapable of managing herself.””

The pieces connected.

Monica wasn’t just trying to remove Evelyn.

She was trying to make everyone believe Evelyn needed to be removed.

A story.

A carefully built story.

When they returned home, Monica was waiting.

She looked different.

Less confident.

“You went to see a lawyer.””

Jason nodded.

“Yes.””

She laughed.

“So now you’re against me.””

“No.””

Jason looked at her.

“I’m against what you did.””

Monica’s expression hardened.

“You think your mother is innocent?””

Evelyn stepped forward.

“I am not perfect.””

Everyone looked at her.

“I make mistakes. I get tired. I need help sometimes.””

She paused.

“But I never deserved this.””

Monica looked away.

For a moment, Jason thought she might apologize.

She didn’t.

Instead, she said:

“You’ll regret choosing her.””

Jason stared.

“Is that a threat?””

“No.””

She smiled faintly.

“It’s a warning.””

That night, Jason checked the security footage from the house.

He wanted to understand exactly what happened the day Monica claimed Evelyn attacked her.

The video was clear.

Too clear.

He watched Monica grab Evelyn’s arm.

He watched the push.

He watched Monica immediately change her expression.

The victim.

The helpless wife.

The injured person.

Jason saved the video.

Then he heard something outside.

A car door closing.

He looked through the window.

Ryan was standing outside.

Talking to someone.

Someone Jason couldn’t see.

Then Ryan handed that person an envelope.

Jason zoomed in on the camera.

And froze.

Because the person receiving the envelope…

Was not Monica.

It was someone else.

Someone who had visited their home many times.

Someone Evelyn trusted.

Someone who had been helping them gather information.

Jason grabbed his phone.

And before he could open the front door…

A message appeared on the screen.

Unknown number.

May you like

One sentence.

“Your mother doesn’t know the whole truth about this house.””
