Chapter 5: The Secret Evelyn Kept
Jason stared at the message.
For a long time, he didn’t move.
The house was quiet.
Too quiet.
Behind him, Evelyn was asleep.
Sophie was asleep.
And somewhere outside, someone was watching.
Jason typed a reply.
“Who is this?””
The response came almost immediately.
“You need to ask your mother why she never told you about the first owner.””
Jason frowned.
The first owner?
He looked around the living room.
The old photographs.
The wooden shelves.
The fireplace.
The house had always been part of his childhood.
But suddenly, it felt like there were rooms inside it he had never entered.
The next morning, Jason showed Evelyn the message.
She went completely still.
Not confused.
Not surprised.
Afraid.
Jason noticed.
“Mom?””
She looked away.
“I hoped this day would never come.””
His heart sank.
“What day?””
Evelyn sat down.
“The day someone started fighting over this house.””
“But why?””
She looked at the old family picture above the fireplace.
“Because this house is worth more than they think.””
Jason waited.
Finally, she said:
“Your father didn’t build this house alone.””
“What does that mean?””
“Before Arthur and I moved here, someone else owned it.””
“Who?””
Evelyn hesitated.
“A woman named Clara Whitmore.””
Jason had never heard that name.
“Who was she?””
Evelyn looked at him.
“Your father’s first wife.””
The room went silent.
Jason stared.
“My father was married before?””
“Yes.””
“Why didn’t I know?””
“Because Clara disappeared from his life before you were born.””
Jason sat down slowly.
This was impossible.
“My father never mentioned her.””
“I know.””
“Why?””
Evelyn looked down.
“Because there was a reason.””
Before Jason could ask more, the front door opened.
Sophie walked in holding a folder.
“Daddy.””
Jason turned.
“What happened?””
“I found something.””
His stomach tightened.
“What?””
She placed the folder on the table.
“I found it behind Grandma’s old photo frame.””
Evelyn’s face changed.
“Sophie…”
“I’m sorry, Grandma.””
Jason opened the folder.
Inside were old documents.
Letters.
Photographs.
And one handwritten note.
The handwriting was old.
But the words were clear.
“Arthur, if anything happens to me, the house must stay protected.””
Jason looked at Evelyn.
“Mom?””
She didn’t answer.
Another document fell out.
A legal agreement.
His eyes moved across the page.
Then stopped.
The house wasn’t simply protected for Evelyn.
It was protected for someone else too.
Someone connected to Clara.
Someone Monica and Ryan had no idea existed.
Jason looked at his mother.
“Who is this person?””
Evelyn closed her eyes.
“I thought she would never come back.””
The front door suddenly opened.
Everyone turned.
A woman stood there.
Older.
Elegant.
Holding a small suitcase.
Her eyes moved toward Evelyn.
Then toward Jason.
And finally toward the house.
“I’m sorry,” the woman said softly.
“But I think it’s time you learned why this house was never really yours.””
Jason stood frozen.
“Who are you?””
The woman looked at Evelyn.
May you like
Then whispered:
“I’m Clara’s daughter.””
