Chapter 6: The Woman Who Came Back
Jason couldn’t move.
The woman standing in the doorway looked nothing like the villain he had imagined.
She wasn’t angry.
She wasn’t threatening.
She looked tired.
Like someone who had carried a secret for decades.
Evelyn slowly stood.
“Clara…”
The woman’s eyes filled with emotion.
“No one has called me that in this house for a very long time.””
Jason looked between them.
“Mom, what is happening?””
Evelyn opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
The woman stepped inside and placed the suitcase on the floor.
“My name is Laura Whitmore.””
She looked at Jason.
“I’m Arthur’s daughter.””
The room became silent.
Jason felt like the walls were moving.
“My father had a daughter?””
Laura nodded.
“Yes.””
“And nobody told me?””
Her expression softened.
“Because your father was afraid.””
Jason laughed once.
Not because it was funny.
Because nothing made sense anymore.
“My entire life, I thought I knew my family.””
Evelyn lowered her eyes.
“I’m sorry.””
Those two words hurt more than any explanation.
Jason looked at his mother.
“How long have you known?””
“Since before you were born.””
His chest tightened.
“You knew?””
Evelyn nodded.
“Arthur told me everything.””
“Then why hide it?””
Evelyn looked toward the old fireplace.
“Because Laura’s mother was hurt. There was anger. There were things that happened before I entered Arthur’s life.””
Laura interrupted gently.
“My mother and Arthur divorced. They were young. They made mistakes.””
Jason looked at her.
“Then why was the house protected?””
Laura walked toward the table and touched the old documents.
“Because this house belonged to my mother’s family first.””
Jason stared.
“What?””
“Arthur bought it after Clara left. But he always believed it should remain connected to the women who built it.””
She opened another document.
“My grandmother purchased this land decades ago.””
Jason read the paper.
The names.
The dates.
The history.
Everything he thought he knew about his childhood home had been incomplete.
“But why come now?””
Laura looked toward the window.
“Because I heard someone was trying to force Evelyn out.””
Jason immediately thought of Monica.
“She contacted you?””
Laura shook her head.
“No.””
“Then how did you know?””
Laura hesitated.
“That’s the part you need to understand.””
Before she could continue, the door opened.
Monica walked in.
She stopped when she saw Laura.
Her face drained.
“You.””
Jason noticed.
“You know her?””
Monica said nothing.
Laura stared at her.
“Yes.””
Jason looked at his wife.
“What is going on?””
Monica recovered quickly.
“I can explain.””
Jason almost smiled.
Those words had become meaningless.
“Everyone seems to have explanations.””
Monica stepped forward.
“Jason, don’t listen to her.””
“Why?””
“Because she’s trying to take this house.””
Laura shook her head.
“No.””
She looked directly at Monica.
“I’m trying to stop you from taking it.””
Monica’s expression changed.
Jason noticed.
“You knew about the house.””
Monica stayed quiet.
Then she whispered:
“I knew there were complications.””
“Complications?””
Jason pointed toward the documents.
“You created fake evidence that my mother couldn’t live here.””
“I was trying to protect our future.””
“No.””
His voice hardened.
“You were trying to own something that was never yours.””
Monica looked at Evelyn.
“You were always going to choose her over me.””
Evelyn looked hurt.
“This was never about choosing.””
“Of course it was.””
Monica grabbed her purse.
“You’ll all regret this.””
She walked toward the door.
Then stopped.
“You think you’ve won?””
Jason stared.
“Yes.””
Monica smiled coldly.
“No.””
She looked at Laura.
“Ask her what happened twenty-five years ago.””
Then she left.
Jason turned.
“What happened?””
Laura didn’t answer.
Evelyn looked terrified.
And Jason realized something.
Monica hadn’t been guessing.
May you like
She knew a secret.
A secret Evelyn had hidden.
