Chapter 7: The Uncle Who Was Never Supposed to Know

“Daniel Bennett.””

The name echoed through the room.

Nobody moved.

Nobody breathed.

For a moment, I wondered if I had heard Layla wrong.

Because the man she had just named wasn’t some stranger from the past.

He wasn’t someone we could easily remove from our lives.

He was family.

Marcus’s older brother.

The man who had stood beside him at our wedding.

The man who had held baby Layla when she was only a few months old.

The man who used to joke that she had his stubborn personality.

My stomach turned.

“Marcus,” I whispered.

But he didn’t answer.

He was staring at the letter like it had personally betrayed him.

“No.””

His voice was quiet.

“No, that’s impossible.””

Layla looked at him.

“Dad…”

He shook his head.

“Daniel couldn’t…”

He stopped.

Because whatever he was about to say, he couldn’t finish.

I knew why.

Because suddenly, every memory had a second meaning.

Every family gathering.

Every conversation.

Every moment Daniel had spent around Layla.

“What are you thinking?”” I asked Marcus.

He didn’t respond.

Instead, he looked at Richard.

“Did you know?””

Richard looked down.

“Yes.””

Marcus’s expression changed instantly.

“You knew my brother was her biological father?””

“I suspected.””

“You suspected?””

Marcus stepped forward.

“You brought this into my house. You told my daughter something that could destroy everything she knows. And now you’re saying you only suspected?””

Richard remained calm.

“I needed proof.””

“Proof?””

“Yes.””

Richard looked at Layla.

“Claire never wanted anyone to know Daniel’s identity unless she was certain Layla was safe.””

Layla’s eyes filled with anger.

“Safe?””

Everyone looked at her.

She stood up.

“My whole life, people have been deciding what was safe for me.””

Her voice shook.

“But nobody asked me.””

I immediately reached for her.

She stepped back.

Not from me.

From everyone.

“I’m eighteen years old.””

She wiped her tears.

“I’m old enough to know who I am.””

Nobody spoke.

Because she was right.

For the first time all day, Layla wasn’t just reacting.

She was demanding answers.

Richard nodded slowly.

“You deserve them.””

“Then tell me everything.””

He looked at the letter.

“Your mother, Claire, was seventeen when she met Daniel.””

Marcus closed his eyes.

He already knew where this was going.

“Don’t,” he whispered.

But Richard continued.

“She believed he loved her.””

Layla looked at Marcus.

“Did you know?””

Marcus looked away.

“No.””

“You’re sure?””

“Yes.””

His voice cracked.

“I knew my brother was reckless. I knew he made bad choices.””

He swallowed.

“But I never knew this.””

Richard nodded.

“Daniel found out Claire was pregnant.””

“What happened?”” Layla asked.

Richard looked at her.

“He panicked.””

“Because of me?””

“No.””

His voice softened.

“Because of himself.””

He explained that Daniel had been afraid of losing his reputation.

His career.

His image.

Everything he had built.

“He told Claire that a baby would ruin his life.””

Layla’s face hardened.

“And what did she say?””

Richard looked at the floor.

“She said you were her life.””

Silence.

I watched my daughter absorb those words.

Words from a mother she never knew.

Words she had spent eighteen years wondering if she would ever hear.

“She wanted to keep me,” Layla whispered.

“Yes.””

“Then why did she leave me?””

Richard looked at me.

Then at Marcus.

“Because she thought Daniel would never stop.””

Marcus finally spoke.

“Why didn’t she come to me?””

Richard looked at him.

“Because she didn’t know you well enough.””

That hurt him.

I saw it.

Because Marcus had always been the kind of person who wanted to fix things.

To protect people.

And knowing someone needed help while he was unaware was painful.

“What happened to Claire?”” Layla asked.

Richard hesitated.

That hesitation made everyone tense.

“She disappeared.””

My blood ran cold.

“Disappeared?””

“Yes.””

“When?””

“Six months after Layla was born.””

Nobody spoke.

Layla looked at the floor.

“She abandoned me.””

“No.””

The word came from me immediately.

She looked at me.

“No, sweetheart.””

“But she left.””

“She left because she was trying to protect you.””

“How do we know that?””

Nobody answered.

Because that was the hardest question.

How do you trust someone’s love when they weren’t there?

Richard slowly pointed to the letter.

“Because she wrote everything down.””

Layla looked at the paper.

“What else does it say?””

Richard looked at the letter.

“She wrote that Daniel threatened her.””

Marcus’s face changed.

“What?””

“She said if she ever tried to expose him, he would make sure nobody believed her.””

I felt sick.

Daniel.

The same man who had smiled at our family.

The same man who had brought gifts for Layla.

The same man who had called her “his little princess.””

My hands started shaking.

“He knew?””

Richard nodded.

“He knew you had her.””

I looked at Marcus.

“What?””

Richard continued.

“Daniel knew Claire gave Layla to another family.””

Marcus’s voice was low.

“How?””

“Because Claire told him.””

“Why would she do that?””

Richard looked at Layla.

“To make him believe she was gone.””

The room went quiet.

“She wanted Daniel to stop searching.””

Marcus looked horrified.

“Wait.””

He turned toward Richard.

“You’re saying Daniel knew about Layla?””

“Yes.””

“And he let us raise her?””

Richard’s face darkened.

“No.””

A cold silence followed.

“He tried to find her.””

My heart stopped.

“When?””

Richard looked at Layla.

“Several times.””

Layla went pale.

“What?””

“Your mother spent years moving, changing jobs, staying away from places connected to Daniel.””

“But she disappeared.””

“Yes.””

“Where did she go?””

Richard looked at the floor.

“We never found out.””

Nobody spoke.

Then Marcus asked the question everyone was thinking.

“Why is this happening now?””

Richard looked at him.

“Because Daniel found out.””

The room froze.

“Found out what?”” I asked.

Richard’s eyes moved toward Layla.

“That she exists.””

A terrible feeling settled over me.

“Why now?””

Richard looked at Ethan.

“Because Ethan’s sister accidentally discovered an old family record.””

Ethan looked shocked.

“My sister?””

“She found Claire’s name.””

Richard took a breath.

“And she started asking questions.””

Layla hugged herself.

“And Daniel?””

Richard’s voice became quiet.

“He’s coming.””

The words felt like ice.

“When?””

Richard looked at his phone.

“He knows where we are.””

Marcus immediately moved closer to Layla.

“No.””

Richard nodded.

“He has been trying to contact me all morning.””

“Why?””

Richard looked at the envelope.

“Because he wants that letter.””

“Why?””

Richard’s eyes hardened.

“Because the letter contains something that could destroy him.””

Nobody spoke.

Then Layla noticed something.

Something I hadn’t seen.

A small folded piece of paper inside the envelope.

“Wait.””

She reached into the letter.

“There’s something else.””

Everyone turned.

She unfolded it.

Her eyes moved across the page.

Then her face changed.

“Mom…”

I stepped closer.

“What?””

She looked at me.

“This isn’t from Claire.””

My heart sank.

“Then who is it from?””

Layla’s hands trembled as she read the final line.

“It says…”

She looked at Marcus.

“It’s from Daniel.””

The room went silent.

And the first sentence of the note was enough to make Marcus turn completely pale.

May you like

Because Daniel had written:

*“If Layla ever discovers the truth, she must know that Tasha and Marcus are the reason Claire disappeared.””*
