Chapter 5: The Secret Hidden Before Her First Breath
The room felt smaller after Richard said those words.
Not because anyone moved.
Because suddenly, every person standing there was carrying a question.
A question nobody wanted to ask.
Marcus was the first to speak.
“What do you mean this involves Layla?””
Richard looked at him.
For the first time since he arrived, he didn’t look confident.
He looked afraid.
“I think everyone needs to sit down.””
Nobody sat.
Not immediately.
Because sitting felt too normal.
And nothing about that moment was normal.
Layla held onto my hand.
Her fingers were cold.
“Mom,” she whispered.
“I’m here.””
She looked at Richard.
“Why would you know something about me?””
Richard looked down.
“I didn’t know how to tell you.””
My stomach tightened.
Tell her what?
What could possibly connect a man we barely knew to our daughter’s life?
Marcus stepped closer.
“You have about ten seconds to explain why you’re standing in my house saying my daughter needs to know the truth.””
Richard nodded slowly.
“You’re right.””
He took a breath.
“Twenty years ago, before Ethan was born, I knew a woman named Claire.””
Ethan frowned.
“Dad?””
Richard ignored him.
“Claire worked at the same hospital as my wife. We became friends.””
I felt confused.
“What does this have to do with Layla?””
Richard looked at me.
“Claire was pregnant.””
Silence.
“Her baby was supposed to be born around the same time as ours.””
I looked at Layla.
She looked back at me.
Neither of us understood.
Richard continued.
“Something happened during that pregnancy.””
“What?”” Marcus asked.
Richard’s voice became quieter.
“Claire was alone. She didn’t have much support. She was scared.””
Ethan shook his head.
“Dad, stop talking in riddles.””
Richard closed his eyes briefly.
“She gave birth to a baby girl.””
My heart started beating faster.
“A baby girl?””
“Yes.””
“And?””
Richard looked at Layla.
“And that baby girl was Layla.””
The words didn’t make sense.
They couldn’t.
My brain rejected them before I even understood them.
“No.””
The word came out before I could stop it.
Richard looked at me sadly.
“I know this is difficult.””
“No.””
I stepped back.
“No, you don’t get to walk into my house and say something like that.””
“Tasha—”
“No, Marcus.””
My voice shook.
“But she is my daughter.””
Nobody spoke.
Because everyone knew.
Everyone knew that wasn’t just a sentence.
That was eighteen years of memories.
Eighteen years of bedtime stories.
Doctor visits.
First steps.
First words.
The first day of school.
Every fever.
Every nightmare.
Every hug.
Every moment.
I looked at Layla.
She was staring at me.
Her face had gone completely blank.
Like her mind was trying to protect her from understanding.
“Mom?””
I immediately reached for her.
“Sweetheart, don’t listen to him like this is the whole story.””
But even as I said it, I realized something.
I didn’t know what the whole story was.
Richard spoke carefully.
“I’m not saying she isn’t your daughter.””
“Then what are you saying?””
“That there are things you don’t know.””
Marcus stepped between us.
“Start from the beginning.””
Richard nodded.
“That’s what I’m trying to do.””
He looked at Ethan.
“My son and Layla are connected in a way none of us expected.””
Ethan looked horrified.
“Connected how?””
Richard swallowed.
“Because Claire was your biological mother’s sister.””
The silence that followed was almost unbearable.
Layla looked confused.
“What?””
Richard continued.
“Claire was my wife’s sister.””
I stared at him.
“Wait.””
My thoughts were moving too quickly.
“Are you saying Layla is related to Ethan?””
Richard nodded.
“Not by blood through me. But through Claire.””
Ethan stepped back.
“No.””
Layla’s eyes filled with panic.
“What does that mean?””
Richard looked at her.
“It means you and Ethan are cousins.””
Nobody moved.
The sentence hung there.
Heavy.
Impossible.
I felt the room spin slightly.
Layla covered her mouth.
Ethan looked sick.
“No.””
His voice was barely audible.
“No, that’s not possible.””
Richard looked at him.
“I wish it wasn’t.””
Marcus looked at me.
I could see the questions in his eyes.
Questions I had no answers for.
Because I was trapped between two realities.
The reality where Layla was my little girl.
And this impossible revelation.
“Why didn’t anyone tell us?”” Marcus demanded.
Richard looked away.
“Because Claire made a decision.””
“What decision?””
“To give Layla a chance at a normal life.””
I stared at him.
“What does that mean?””
Richard sighed.
“Claire was young. She was struggling. She believed Layla would have a better future with you.””
My heart stopped.
“You knew?””
Richard nodded.
“Yes.””
“You knew my daughter existed?””
“Yes.””
“And you said nothing?””
His expression changed.
“I was told to stay away.””
“By who?””
Richard hesitated.
That hesitation told me everything.
“By Claire.””
I looked at Layla.
She was crying silently.
Not the crying from earlier.
This was different.
This was the kind of crying that came when the ground beneath you disappeared.
“I don’t understand,” she whispered.
I went to her.
“You don’t have to understand right now.””
“But Mom…”
She looked at me.
“Am I not really yours?””
My heart shattered.
I grabbed her face gently.
“Listen to me.””
She looked into my eyes.
“You are my daughter.””
“But—”
“No.””
My voice became stronger.
“You are my daughter because I raised you. Because I loved you before you could even remember being loved.””
Tears fell down her cheeks.
“But what if everything I know is a lie?””
I pulled her into my arms.
“Then we find the truth together.””
Behind us, Marcus was still focused on Richard.
“There’s something you’re not telling us.””
Richard looked uncomfortable.
“What makes you say that?””
“Because you didn’t come here today just because of the pregnancy.””
Richard said nothing.
Marcus stepped closer.
“You came here because you knew something would happen.””
Richard looked at the floor.
“I received information.””
“What information?””
“That Claire left something behind.””
I froze.
“Left what?””
“A letter.””
“To who?””
Richard looked at Layla.
“To her daughter.””
Nobody spoke.
A letter.
After eighteen years.
A message from the woman who gave birth to Layla.
The woman none of us had talked about.
The woman Layla never knew existed.
Layla wiped her tears.
“Where is it?””
Richard hesitated.
“I have it.””
“Give it to me.””
He looked at her.
“Layla, you need to understand something.””
“What?””
“The letter explains why Claire made the choice she made.””
“And?””
Richard’s face became serious.
“It also explains why she was afraid someone would find out the truth.””
A chill went through me.
“Find out what truth?””
Richard looked at all of us.
Then he reached into his jacket.
He pulled out a small, worn envelope.
The paper looked old.
Like it had been hidden for years.
On the front were three words written in faded ink.
*For My Daughter.*
Layla stared at it.
Her hands trembled as she reached out.
But before she touched it, Richard stopped her.
“There’s one more thing.””
She looked up.
“What?””
Richard’s voice dropped.
“Claire didn’t just write this letter before she disappeared.””
The room went silent.
“She wrote it because she knew someone was trying to take Layla away.””
My blood ran cold.
“Take her away from who?””
Richard looked at me.
May you like
And his answer made my entire body freeze.
“From you.””
