Amused

Chapter 4: The Family That Already Knew

The message stayed on Ethan’s phone screen.

Nobody spoke.

Not for several seconds.

Maybe because we were all trying to understand the same impossible thing.

How did Ethan’s father know?

I looked at Ethan.

He looked as confused as the rest of us.

“That’s not possible,” he whispered.

Marcus handed the phone back to him.

“What exactly does your father know?””

Ethan stared at the message again.

“I don’t know.””

“That’s not good enough.””

“Marcus,” I said quietly.

But my husband didn’t look at me.

His focus was on Ethan.

Not because he hated him.

Because he was trying to protect Layla.

A father’s fear doesn’t always look gentle.

Sometimes it looks like anger.

Ethan put the phone into his pocket.

“I swear, I didn’t tell him.””

Layla stepped closer.

“Then how would he know?””

Ethan shook his head.

“I have no idea.””

I watched my daughter’s face.

A few minutes ago, she had been afraid her parents would find out.

Now her fear had changed.

She wasn’t worried about us anymore.

She was worried about what came next.

“Who else knows?”” I asked.

Ethan looked at Layla.

“Nobody.””

“Are you sure?””

“Yes.””

The answer came too quickly.

I noticed.

So did Marcus.

“Ethan.””

He looked at him.

“Are you sure?””

Ethan looked down.

For the first time, he seemed unsure.

“I told one person.””

Layla’s face changed.

“Who?””

“My sister.””

“Why?””

“Because I needed someone to talk to.””

“When did you tell her?””

“Last night.””

Marcus let out a slow breath.

“So your sister knew.””

“Yes.””

“And now your father knows.””

“Yes.””

“And somehow, he found out within hours.””

Nobody said anything.

Because we all understood the same thing.

Someone had told him.

Layla sat down at the kitchen table.

Her hands shook.

“I knew this would happen.””

I immediately walked toward her.

“What?””

“I knew everything would fall apart.””

“Layla—”

“No, Mom.”” She looked at me with tears in her eyes.

“This is why I didn’t want anyone to know.””

Her voice broke.

“Because the second people find out, everything changes.””

I knelt beside her.

“Sweetheart, things were already changing.””

She looked away.

“I wanted one more day.””

That sentence broke my heart.

“One more day?””

She nodded.

“One more normal day.””

I understood.

Yesterday, she was a high school graduate.

Yesterday, she was a girl packing for college.

Yesterday, she was worried about dorm decorations and meeting new people.

Today, she was sitting at a kitchen table discussing adulthood, responsibility, and a future she never planned.

No one gets enough time to prepare for something like that.

A car engine suddenly sounded outside.

Ethan looked toward the window.

His face went pale.

“No.””

Marcus turned.

“What?””

“My dad.””

The entire room froze.

“He’s here?””

Ethan nodded slowly.

“I think so.””

Marcus walked toward the window.

A black SUV was parked outside our house.

A man stepped out.

Even from a distance, I could see the confidence in the way he walked.

Not rushed.

Not uncertain.

Like he already knew he belonged there.

Ethan whispered:

“That’s him.””

Layla stood up.

“Mom…”

I took her hand.

“I’m here.””

The doorbell rang.

Once.

Twice.

Marcus opened the door.

A man in his early fifties stood outside.

Gray at his temples.

Perfectly pressed shirt.

Cold expression.

He looked past Marcus and immediately found Ethan.

“Ethan.””

Not hello.

Not good morning.

Just his son’s name.

Ethan stepped forward.

“Dad.””

The man’s eyes moved around the room.

Then landed on Layla.

I saw it.

The judgment.

Not spoken.

But there.

His expression changed slightly.

“So it’s true.””

Marcus stepped forward.

“You know who I am?””

The man looked at him.

“I know enough.””

“That’s not an answer.””

“My name is Richard Collins.””

He extended no hand.

Offered no greeting.

“I assume you’re Layla’s parents.””

Marcus nodded.

“I am her father.””

Richard looked at him.

“Then you should understand why I’m here.””

“No,” Marcus said.

“I don’t.””

Richard’s jaw tightened.

“My son made a mistake.””

The words hit the room instantly.

Layla flinched.

Ethan’s face changed.

“Dad.””

But Richard continued.

“This situation needs to be handled responsibly.””

Marcus’s voice became quieter.

“Responsible according to who?””

Richard looked at him.

“According to reality.””

I felt anger rising inside me.

Not because he was scared.

Everyone was scared.

But because he was speaking about Layla like she wasn’t standing there.

Like she was a problem to solve.

Not a person.

“Layla is not a situation,” I said.

Richard finally looked at me.

“No offense, Mrs. Bennett, but emotions won’t make this easier.””

“And coldness won’t make it better.””

The room went silent.

Marcus glanced at me.

He knew I rarely challenged strangers.

But I couldn’t stay quiet.

Not when my daughter was sitting there feeling smaller and smaller.

Ethan stepped between us.

“Dad, stop.””

Richard looked at him.

“You need to come home.””

“No.””

The answer surprised everyone.

Especially Ethan.

Richard stared.

“What did you say?””

“I said no.””

His father’s expression hardened.

“You don’t understand what you’re doing.””

“I understand exactly.””

“You’re throwing away your future.””

Ethan shook his head.

“No. I’m taking responsibility for it.””

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Because Ethan’s words didn’t sound like a scared teenager.

They sounded like someone who had made a decision.

Richard looked at Layla.

“And what about you?””

Layla slowly lifted her eyes.

“What about me?””

“What do you want?””

Everyone looked at her.

I watched my daughter take a breath.

She had spent the entire day being afraid.

Afraid of disappointing us.

Afraid of losing college.

Afraid of Ethan leaving.

Afraid of everyone’s reaction.

But something changed in that moment.

She wiped her tears.

“I want everyone to stop talking about me like I’m not here.””

Richard blinked.

“I didn’t mean—”

“Yes, you did.””

Her voice shook.

But she kept going.

“I know I made a mistake. I know this isn’t what anyone expected.””

She looked at Ethan.

Then at me.

Then at Marcus.

“But I’m still a person.””

Nobody interrupted.

“I’m still Layla.””

The silence afterward felt different.

Not uncomfortable.

Respectful.

Even Marcus looked at her differently.

Like he was seeing not just his daughter…

But the woman she was becoming.

Then Richard’s phone rang.

He looked down.

His expression changed.

He answered immediately.

“Yes?””

A pause.

Then his eyes moved toward Ethan.

“What do you mean?””

Another pause.

His face lost color.

“No. That’s impossible.””

Everyone noticed.

Marcus stepped closer.

“What happened?””

Richard ignored him.

He listened for several seconds.

Then slowly lowered the phone.

Ethan looked worried.

“Dad?””

Richard stared at his son.

Then at Layla.

And when he finally spoke, his voice was no longer cold.

It was shaken.

“Ethan…”

“What?””

Richard swallowed.

“There’s something you need to know.””

Nobody moved.

“What?””

Richard looked directly at Layla.

And the next words changed everything.

“Your mother and I already knew about the pregnancy before you did.””

Ethan froze.

Layla grabbed my hand.

Marcus frowned.

“What are you talking about?””

Richard’s face tightened.

“Because this isn’t the first secret in this family.””

He took a breath.

“And Layla needs to know the truth about what happened before she makes any decisions.””

The room went completely silent.

Because suddenly, this wasn’t just about a pregnancy.

It was about a secret that had existed long before that morning.

May you like

And somehow…

It involved Layla.
