Amused

Chapter 6: The Letter That Changed Who She Believed She Was

The envelope sat in Layla’s hands.

She didn’t open it.

She couldn’t.

For the first time since Richard walked through our door, nobody was arguing.

Nobody was demanding answers.

We were all just staring at that small piece of paper that somehow carried eighteen years of secrets.

I watched my daughter’s fingers tremble.

The same hands that used to reach for mine when she was afraid of thunderstorms.

The same hands that held my finger when she took her first steps.

Now they were holding a letter from a woman she had never known.

A woman who was apparently connected to the biggest questions of her life.

“Layla,” I whispered.

She looked at me.

“Did you know?””

The question was quiet.

But it hurt more than if she had screamed.

I swallowed.

“No.””

She looked back at the envelope.

“Are you sure?””

“Yes.””

“Mom…”

Her voice cracked.

“Everyone keeps saying things about my life that I didn’t know.””

I stepped closer.

“I know.””

“How can I trust anything?””

That question broke me.

Because she wasn’t accusing me.

She was scared.

Scared that the one thing she had always been certain about — who she was and where she belonged — was suddenly uncertain.

I reached for her hand.

“You trust me because I’m your mother.””

She looked at me.

“Even if I’m not your daughter?””

My chest tightened.

“Don’t say that.””

“But what if—”

“No.””

I held her hand tighter.

“You are my daughter.””

She looked away.

“But what am I?””

Before I could answer, Marcus spoke.

“You’re Layla Bennett.””

Everyone looked at him.

His voice was steady.

“You’re the girl who used to hide cookies under her pillow. You’re the girl who broke her arm trying to prove she could ride a bike without help. You’re the girl who called me crying at two in the morning because you saw a spider in your room.””

A small, broken smile appeared on Layla’s face.

Marcus continued.

“You’re the girl I walked into kindergarten with because you were too scared to go inside alone.””

His eyes became emotional.

“You’re my daughter.””

Layla looked down.

For a moment, she let herself believe him.

Then Richard cleared his throat.

“There’s something else you should know.””

Marcus immediately turned.

“What?””

Richard looked at the envelope.

“The letter wasn’t supposed to be found today.””

“Then why was it?””

Richard hesitated.

“Because someone gave it to me.””

“Who?””

Richard looked uncomfortable.

“Your husband.””

My eyes widened.

“What?””

Marcus looked just as confused.

“What are you talking about?””

Richard looked between us.

“Your husband knew about the letter.””

The room changed instantly.

I looked at Marcus.

He looked shocked.

“No.””

Richard frowned.

“No?””

“I have never met you before today.””

“Then why did someone claiming to be you contact me last week?””

Nobody spoke.

My stomach dropped.

“What?””

Richard reached into his phone.

He opened something.

An email.

“I received this message from an address connected to your family.””

Marcus stepped closer.

“Show me.””

Richard handed him the phone.

Marcus read the screen.

His face changed.

Not guilt.

Confusion.

Then anger.

“This isn’t from me.””

Richard stared at him.

“What?””

“This isn’t my email.””

He looked at me.

“I swear.””

I believed him.

Because I knew Marcus.

I knew his anger.

I knew his frustration.

But I also knew when he was hiding something.

And he wasn’t.

Someone had used his name.

Someone had contacted Richard.

Someone had brought this secret back into our lives.

“Who would do that?”” I whispered.

Nobody answered.

Then Layla spoke.

“Maybe Claire.””

Everyone looked at her.

She stared at the envelope.

“Maybe she knew someone would try to hide this.””

Richard’s expression changed.

“You’re smarter than you think.””

Layla looked at him.

“I’m not trying to be smart.””

Her voice was exhausted.

“I’m trying to understand why my whole life suddenly feels like a story someone else wrote.””

Nobody had an answer.

Finally, she opened the envelope.

Slowly.

Carefully.

Like she was afraid the words inside could hurt her.

The paper unfolded.

Her eyes moved across the first line.

Then stopped.

A tear fell.

“What does it say?”” I asked.

She didn’t answer.

“Layla?””

She looked up.

Her face was filled with something I couldn’t identify.

Pain.

Shock.

Maybe even anger.

“She knew my name.””

Richard nodded.

“Of course she did.””

“No.””

Layla shook her head.

“She knew my middle name too.””

I froze.

Because nobody outside our family knew that.

Not many people even knew why we chose it.

She looked down at the page.

“She wrote…”

Her voice became unsteady.

“She wrote, ‘My sweet Layla Rose…’”

The room went quiet.

Marcus looked at me.

Because suddenly, we all remembered.

The day we named her.

The day we brought her home.

The day we promised to love her forever.

I sat beside Layla.

“What else?””

She kept reading.

Then she stopped again.

“What?””

She looked at Richard.

“Why did she write your name?””

Richard went pale.

“What?””

“She wrote that you promised to protect me.””

Richard didn’t move.

“She said you were the only person she trusted.””

His face changed.

A memory.

A painful one.

“I didn’t know she wrote that.””

“Why would she say that?””

Richard looked away.

“Because Claire was afraid.””

“Of what?””

Richard was silent.

Marcus stepped forward.

“Answer her.””

Richard took a deep breath.

“She was afraid of Layla’s biological father.””

The words hit the room.

Layla stopped breathing.

“Biological father?””

I felt Marcus tense.

“You said Claire chose us.””

“She did.””

“Then why are you bringing up her father?””

Richard looked at Layla.

“Because he was the reason she gave you away.””

The room became painfully quiet.

Layla stared at him.

“Who is he?””

Richard didn’t answer immediately.

That scared me.

Because hesitation always meant there was something worse coming.

Finally, he said:

“Someone who never wanted her to be born.””

Layla’s face went white.

“What?””

Richard looked at the floor.

“Claire found out she was pregnant, and he wanted her to get rid of the baby.””

My hand covered my mouth.

“But she didn’t.””

“No.””

“Why?””

Richard looked at Layla.

“Because she loved you.””

Tears filled Layla’s eyes.

“But why didn’t she keep me?””

Richard’s voice softened.

“Because she knew he would come after you.””

Nobody spoke.

“She believed the safest place for you was with someone who could protect you.””

Layla looked at me.

“And she chose you.””

I nodded through tears.

“She did.””

For the first time since this nightmare began, Layla reached for me.

I held her.

But then her eyes moved back to the letter.

There was more.

She continued reading.

And suddenly her expression changed.

“What?””

I wiped my face.

“What is it?””

She looked at the bottom of the page.

“There’s a name.””

Richard stepped closer.

“What name?””

Layla’s voice shook.

“The name of my biological father.””

Nobody moved.

“Who is it?”” Marcus asked.

Layla looked up.

And when she spoke, the entire room froze.

“Marcus.””

My husband’s face changed.

“What?””

Layla looked back at the letter.

“He’s someone you know.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“Who?””

Layla swallowed.

Then she read the final line aloud.

“‘If he ever finds out where you are, do not let him near you.’”

She looked at us.

Then whispered the name written beneath it.

A name that made Marcus step backward.

Because he recognized it.

“It says…”

Layla’s voice broke.

“‘Your father is Daniel Bennett.’”

The room went silent.

Because Daniel Bennett wasn’t a stranger.

He was Marcus’s older brother.

And suddenly, the secret hidden for eighteen years had a face.

May you like

A family name.

And a reason someone had tried so hard to keep the truth buried.
