Chapter 8: The Letter That Revealed The Final Betrayal

The darkness swallowed Blackwood Manor.

For the first time in my life, the enormous estate felt vulnerable.

The walls that had always seemed unbreakable suddenly felt like they were hiding something far more dangerous than ghosts.

People.

Secrets.

Enemies.

I stood in the dark library with the envelope still in my hand.

The paper felt strangely warm against my fingers.

As if it carried the weight of every year I had spent wondering who I was.

Outside, footsteps moved across the stone floors.

Many footsteps.

Someone had surrounded the manor.

Adrian stood beside me, his hand still holding mine.

I noticed something strange.

The man who had faced business rivals, angry investors, and powerful enemies without fear was now looking at me with concern.

Not himself.

Me.

“Stay close,” he whispered.

I nodded.

Elena stood on my other side.

My mother.

The word still felt impossible.

She looked toward Victor.

“You brought them here.””

Victor did not deny it.

“I brought the truth here.””

“You brought danger.””

His expression remained calm.

“Sometimes those are the same thing.””

Adrian looked at him.

“If anything happens to her—”

Victor interrupted.

“You still think I am the enemy.””

Adrian’s eyes narrowed.

“Are you not?””

Victor looked at the envelope in my hand.

“That depends on what she discovers.””

Before anyone could answer, a loud crash came from the entrance hall.

The sound echoed through the manor.

Someone had forced their way inside.

Adrian immediately moved.

“Thomas.””

The old butler appeared from the hallway.

“Yes, my lord.””

“Get everyone out through the east passage.””

Thomas hesitated.

“What about you?””

Adrian looked at me.

“I’m staying.””

Thomas understood.

He nodded.

“I expected nothing less.””

Elena looked at Adrian.

“You cannot fight this alone.””

He gave a small, humorless smile.

“I spent twenty years doing exactly that.””

Her expression softened.

“Not anymore.””

The words affected him.

Because for the first time in decades, he was no longer alone.

He had found his sister.

He had found me.

And now he had something to lose again.

A voice suddenly echoed from the hallway.

“Adrian Blackwood!””

Everyone froze.

The voice was unfamiliar.

Cold.

Commanding.

Victor’s face changed slightly.

Not fear.

Recognition.

“They came sooner than expected.””

Adrian looked at him.

“Who are they?””

Victor did not answer.

The library doors opened.

Three men stood outside.

They wore dark clothing.

No uniforms.

No symbols.

Nothing that revealed who they were.

But their confidence said enough.

The man in front stepped forward.

“My name is Marcus Vale.””

Adrian stared.

“Vale.””

The man smiled.

“You remember.””

“I remember my father’s lawyers.””

Marcus nodded.

“Good.””

My stomach tightened.

Lawyers.

People who worked behind documents.

Behind signatures.

Behind legal systems.

Not criminals hiding in shadows.

People who looked respectable.

People who could destroy lives without ever raising their voices.

Marcus looked at me.

“So this is her.””

Adrian immediately stepped forward.

“You do not speak to her.””

Marcus ignored him.

“Evelyn Blackwood.””

Hearing my full name from him felt strange.

“I’m not interested in what you want.””

Marcus smiled.

“You should be.””

Elena’s voice turned sharp.

“Leave.””

Marcus looked at her.

“After all these years, you still think you have authority.””

“I am her mother.””

The room became silent.

Marcus looked surprised.

Only for a second.

Then he laughed softly.

“That is exactly the problem.””

Adrian’s expression darkened.

“What are you talking about?””

Marcus looked at Victor.

“Did you not tell them?””

Victor said nothing.

Adrian turned.

“Tell us what?””

Marcus smiled.

“Your father was not the only one who knew about Evelyn.””

The silence was unbearable.

Marcus continued.

“There were others.””

I felt a chill.

“Who?””

He looked at me.

“The people who managed the Blackwood family’s assets.””

Adrian’s eyes narrowed.

“You.””

“Yes.””

Marcus looked around the room.

“For generations, families like yours survived because people like us handled the things nobles preferred not to see.””

Elena stepped forward.

“You mean the things you helped hide.””

Marcus shrugged.

“History belongs to whoever controls the records.””

The sentence made me sick.

Adrian’s voice became dangerously quiet.

“What do you want?””

Marcus looked at me.

“The inheritance.””

Of course.

The answer was simple.

Money.

Power.

Control.

Everything always came back to that.

Marcus continued.

“Your mother’s inheritance was placed under protection until you turned twenty-five.””

I frowned.

“How do you know?””

“Because I created the agreement.””

Adrian looked at him.

“You manipulated the legal system.””

Marcus smiled.

“I maintained order.””

Elena laughed bitterly.

“Everyone who hurts people always calls it order.””

Marcus ignored her.

“Evelyn, if you sign over your rights, this ends tonight.””

I stared.

“You expect me to believe that?””

“No.””

He looked at me.

“I expect you to understand.””

He pointed toward the dark windows.

“Look outside.””

I did not want to.

But I looked.

Cars surrounded the estate.

More people stood near the gates.

The entire property was trapped.

Marcus spoke calmly.

“You have lived your whole life believing you were powerless.””

His eyes narrowed.

“You are not.””

The words should have sounded comforting.

They did not.

“You are the last person standing between us and everything your family built.””

I looked at Adrian.

He shook his head.

“Do not listen to him.””

Marcus smiled.

“Of course he says that.””

Adrian looked at him.

“What does that mean?””

Marcus turned toward him.

“You think you found your sister and your niece by accident?””

The room froze.

My heart stopped.

“What?””

Marcus smiled.

“Ask him.””

I looked at Adrian.

His expression changed.

“Ask him what?””

Marcus looked pleased.

“Ask him why your mother’s letter appeared tonight.””

Nobody spoke.

Then Elena turned toward Adrian.

A terrible realization crossed her face.

“Adrian…”

He looked at her.

“What?””

Marcus continued.

“Ask yourself who opened the hidden room.””

The silence became unbearable.

I looked at Adrian.

“No.””

He looked at me.

“Evelyn.””

But suddenly, doubt appeared.

Just for a moment.

And that scared me.

Marcus saw it.

“You found the documents because someone wanted you to.””

Adrian’s voice was cold.

“You are lying.””

“Am I?””

Marcus looked at Victor.

“Tell them.””

Everyone turned.

Victor remained silent.

Adrian stared at him.

“Victor.””

The older man looked down.

That was enough.

Adrian’s face changed.

“You knew.””

Victor closed his eyes.

“I knew someone would come.””

“And you let it happen?””

“I needed the truth revealed.””

“You endangered her.””

Victor looked at me.

“I needed to know who would protect her.””

The words hurt.

Because they sounded like everyone else.

Everyone had made choices about my life.

Everyone had decided what I could handle.

Nobody had asked me.

Adrian looked furious.

“You used her as a test?””

Victor’s voice softened.

“No.””

A pause.

“I used myself.””

The room went quiet.

Then Victor walked toward the desk.

He placed an old key beside the envelope.

“This is what they really came for.””

Marcus’s expression changed.

“What are you doing?””

Victor looked at him.

“Ending my family’s mistakes.””

He turned to me.

“Evelyn.””

I looked at him.

“Open the letter.””

Marcus stepped forward.

“No.””

Adrian immediately blocked him.

Victor’s voice was calm.

“Everything you need to know is inside.””

I looked down at the envelope.

My mother.

My past.

My identity.

The truth.

Slowly, I opened it.

Inside was a single page.

The first line made my heart stop.

*My daughter, if you are reading this, then Adrian has finally found you.*

I looked at Adrian.

He stared at the letter.

I continued.

*But before you trust anyone in this family, there is something you must know.*

My hands began shaking.

The next sentence was impossible.

*Your brother did not lose you. He saved you.*

I looked up.

Adrian’s eyes widened.

Then I read the final paragraph.

And every person in the room went silent.

*The person who ordered my disappearance was not your grandfather.*

A pause.

*It was someone who was still alive.*

My breathing stopped.

The last sentence waited beneath it.

*And Adrian has been protecting you from him without even knowing it.*

I slowly lowered the letter.

Everyone looked at one another.

Because now the question had changed.

Not who had betrayed us years ago.

But who was still hiding among us.

Then the library door closed behind us.

And a familiar voice whispered from the darkness:

“You finally found the truth.””

We turned.

A figure stood there.

Someone I recognized.

Someone who had been beside us all night.

Someone who should have been helping us.

May you like

Thomas.

But the old butler was holding a gun.
