Amused

Chapter 7: The Man Who Inherited The Family’s Darkness

The man standing at the end of the corridor looked nothing like a villain.

That was the most terrifying part.

He did not look angry.

He did not look desperate.

He did not look like someone who had spent years hiding crimes and manipulating an entire family.

He looked calm.

Elegant.

Almost kind.

The kind of person strangers would trust immediately.

He wore a perfectly tailored black suit, his silver hair neatly combed back, and his expression carried the confidence of someone who believed he belonged wherever he stood.

Because he did.

For decades, he had belonged here.

Adrian stared at him.

“Uncle Victor.””

The man smiled.

“Adrian.””

His voice was warm.

Too warm.

I immediately felt something was wrong.

People who carried kindness did not usually make an entire room fall silent when they entered.

Victor Blackwood slowly walked into the library.

His eyes moved across the room.

First to Adrian.

Then to Elena.

Then finally to me.

When his gaze stopped on me, his smile disappeared for only a second.

But I saw it.

Recognition.

Not surprise.

Recognition.

“You look just like her,” he said.

My skin turned cold.

Elena stepped forward.

“Stay away from her.””

Victor sighed.

“Still dramatic after all these years.””

Adrian moved between them.

“What are you doing here?””

Victor looked around the library.

“My home.””

Adrian’s expression hardened.

“This is my home.””

Victor smiled slightly.

“Is it?””

The question carried a strange weight.

I looked at Adrian.

He noticed too.

“What does that mean?””

Victor walked toward the desk.

“The Blackwood family was never built on one person.””

He touched the old documents.

“It was built on inheritance.””

Adrian’s eyes narrowed.

“You knew.””

Victor looked at him.

“I knew many things.””

“You knew about Evelyn.””

“Yes.””

The answer came so easily that it shocked me.

Adrian stepped closer.

“For twenty-six years?””

Victor nodded.

“For twenty-six years.””

My hands tightened.

“And you did nothing?””

Victor looked at me.

“I did exactly what was necessary.””

The words made my stomach turn.

Adrian’s voice became colder.

“Necessary?””

“Yes.””

“To hide my sister’s child?””

“To protect the family.””

Adrian laughed once.

A bitter, painful sound.

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

Victor’s expression remained calm.

“Because it is true.””

Elena looked at him with disgust.

“You sound exactly like my father.””

The smile faded.

Only slightly.

But it faded.

“Be careful, Elena.””

The way he said her name made the room colder.

“You have spent years hiding. Do not mistake survival for victory.””

Adrian immediately reacted.

“Enough.””

Victor looked at him.

“My nephew.””

He smiled.

“You have grown into your father’s image.””

Adrian froze.

I saw the anger flash across his face.

“I am nothing like him.””

Victor tilted his head.

“Are you sure?””

The question was designed to hurt.

And it worked.

Because Adrian had spent the entire night discovering that everything he believed about his family was wrong.

Victor knew exactly where to strike.

“You built an empire using his methods.””

Adrian’s jaw tightened.

“You think you know me?””

“I watched you.””

A pause.

“Your father would have been proud.””

The silence afterward was sharp.

Adrian stepped forward.

“I am giving you one chance to explain why you are here.””

Victor smiled.

“There is the Blackwood determination.””

Then he looked at me.

“I came for her.””

Every muscle in Adrian’s body tightened.

“No.””

Victor ignored him.

“Evelyn.””

Hearing my name from him felt wrong.

“How do you know my name?””

Victor looked amused.

“Because I knew who you were before you did.””

I felt a wave of anger.

“You knew I existed.””

“Yes.””

“And you let me live like I had nothing?””

His expression did not change.

“That was not my decision.””

“Then whose was it?””

Victor looked at Elena.

“Your mother’s.””

Elena’s face changed.

“Do not use my choices to justify your cruelty.””

Victor sighed.

“You always were emotional.””

Adrian stepped between them.

“Watch your words.””

Victor looked at him.

“You still defend her.””

“She is my sister.””

“And Evelyn?””

Adrian did not hesitate.

“She is my family.””

Something changed in Victor’s expression.

For the first time, he looked irritated.

Only for a moment.

But it was there.

“You have no idea what you are saying.””

“I do.””

“No.””

Victor stepped closer.

“You have no idea what happens when the entire foundation of this family collapses.””

Adrian stared.

“What foundation?””

Victor smiled.

“The one your father spent his life protecting.””

“The one built on lies?””

Victor’s expression hardened.

“The one built on sacrifice.””

Elena laughed quietly.

“Sacrifice?””

She looked at him.

“You call destroying children sacrifice?””

Victor looked at her.

“You were always incapable of understanding responsibility.””

“And you were always incapable of understanding love.””

The words hit him.

For the first time, the calm mask cracked.

Only briefly.

But enough.

Adrian noticed.

“So it is true.””

Victor looked at him.

“What?””

“You know everything.””

Silence.

Adrian continued.

“You know what happened to my mother.””

Victor did not answer.

“You know what happened to Elena.””

Still silence.

“You know why Evelyn was hidden.””

Victor’s eyes moved to me.

“Yes.””

The honesty was terrifying.

Adrian’s voice dropped.

“Then tell me.””

Victor looked at him.

“No.””

The answer was simple.

Cold.

Final.

Adrian’s expression changed.

“Why?””

“Because some truths destroy people.””

I stepped forward.

“You don’t get to decide that.””

Victor looked at me.

A strange sadness crossed his face.

“You sound like your mother.””

I hated how familiar the sentence felt.

“You don’t know me.””

“No.””

He looked at me carefully.

“But I know what you inherited.””

I frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Victor did not answer.

Instead, he turned to Thomas.

“You kept the promise.””

Thomas remained silent.

Victor smiled.

“I always wondered how long your loyalty would survive.””

Thomas looked at him.

“My loyalty was never to the family name.””

“Then who?””

The old butler glanced at me.

“The people who deserved protection.””

Victor’s expression darkened.

“How noble.””

Then he reached inside his coat.

Adrian immediately moved.

But Victor only removed a small envelope.

He placed it on the desk.

“This belongs to Evelyn.””

I stared at it.

Another letter.

Another secret.

“No,” Elena whispered.

Victor looked at her.

“You knew this day would come.””

Elena’s face went pale.

“What is that?””

Victor smiled.

“The last thing your mother left behind.””

Adrian picked it up.

But Victor stopped him.

“Careful.””

Adrian looked at him.

“Why?””

“Because once she reads it, there is no going back.””

I felt my heart race.

“What does it say?””

Victor looked at me.

“It tells you why your mother disappeared.””

Elena closed her eyes.

“Victor…”

He looked at her.

“It tells her the truth about her birth.””

My hands went cold.

“My birth?””

Victor nodded.

“The truth your mother was willing to die to protect.””

Nobody spoke.

Adrian looked at Elena.

“What does he mean?””

She looked away.

And that frightened me more than anything.

Because Elena had faced Victor without fear.

She had faced years of pain without breaking.

But now?

Now she looked afraid.

I picked up the envelope.

My fingers shook.

There was only one sentence written on the front.

Not my name.

Not a greeting.

Only four words.

*Read this before they find you.*

A sudden noise came from outside.

A car door slammed.

Then another.

Then another.

Victor looked toward the window.

His expression changed.

“They’re here.””

Adrian turned.

“Who?””

Victor looked at him.

“The people who have been waiting for this night.””

The lights flickered.

Again.

And this time, they did not return.

In the darkness, I heard footsteps surrounding the manor.

Many footsteps.

Adrian reached for my hand.

Not as a lord protecting a servant.

As a brother protecting his sister.

And in the darkness, Victor whispered:

“Now you will finally learn why your mother ran…”

May you like

A pause.

“…and why someone is still trying to kill you.””
