Chapter 6: The Woman Who Carried A Mother’s Face
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
The hidden room that had held decades of secrets suddenly felt too small for the three of us standing inside it.
Adrian stared at the woman in the doorway.
I stared at her too.
Because there was no denying it.
The resemblance was impossible.
The same dark eyes.
The same shape of her face.
The same gentle curve of her smile, even though there was no warmth in it.
She looked like the woman in the photographs.
She looked like Elena Blackwood.
She looked like my mother.
But she was alive.
And that made no sense.
Adrian was the first to find his voice.
“No.””
The word came out quietly.
Almost like a child refusing to believe a nightmare was real.
The woman’s expression softened.
“Still stubborn after all these years.””
His face changed.
“Who are you?””
She stepped farther into the room.
The candlelight touched her face.
“I think you already know.””
Adrian shook his head.
“No.””
His voice became harder.
“My sister died.””
The woman looked at him sadly.
“That is what they wanted you to believe.””
A thousand questions seemed to appear at once.
I looked between them.
“Adrian…”
He didn’t hear me.
His entire world had narrowed to the woman standing in front of him.
“If you’re Elena…”
The woman looked at him.
“If?””
His breathing became uneven.
“Then why did you let me believe you were gone?””
The question was not angry.
It was broken.
The woman looked away.
For the first time, I saw pain on her face.
“Because I had no choice.””
Adrian laughed bitterly.
“No choice?””
He stepped forward.
“You had twenty-six years.””
She flinched.
The reaction told me everything.
Whatever happened between them was not simple.
“I searched for you,” Adrian said.
The woman’s eyes filled slightly.
“I know.””
“You know?””
“Yes.””
“How?””
“Because I watched.””
The answer shocked me.
Adrian froze.
“You watched?””
She nodded.
“From a distance.””
“Why?””
Her eyes moved toward me.
And my heart stopped.
“Because I was protecting her.””
I looked at her.
“Me?””
The woman nodded slowly.
“Yes.””
My voice barely worked.
“Who are you?””
The question came out softer than I expected.
She looked at me.
And the sadness in her eyes was unbearable.
“I am Elena.””
The room went silent.
“My mother?””
The word escaped before I could stop it.
She closed her eyes.
A tear fell down her cheek.
“Yes.””
I stepped back.
I had imagined this moment my entire life.
Finding my parents.
Learning where I came from.
Understanding why I was left behind.
But I never imagined my mother would appear after all these years and simply say she had been watching me.
I didn’t know whether to run toward her or away.
“You were alive.””
My voice cracked.
“Yes.””
“And you never came back.””
Pain crossed her face.
“I wanted to.””
“But you didn’t.””
“No.””
The answer hurt because it was honest.
Adrian moved between us.
His expression was cold.
“Explain.””
Elena looked at him.
“I owe you that.””
“You owe her more.””
Her eyes lowered.
“I know.””
Adrian pointed at the documents on the desk.
“My father said you had a child who could destroy everything.””
A shadow crossed her face.
“My father was afraid of anything he could not control.””
“He said you disappeared.””
“I did.””
“Why?””
She took a slow breath.
“Because I found out what he planned.””
The room became quiet.
“What did he plan?”” Adrian asked.
Elena looked at the old documents.
“To take Evelyn away completely.””
My stomach tightened.
“He wanted to erase her existence.””
Adrian’s hands curled into fists.
“But why?””
Elena looked at him.
“Because Evelyn was not just my daughter.””
She paused.
“She was the legal heir to everything your grandfather built.””
I looked at the papers.
The inheritance.
The properties.
The companies.
Everything.
“But that was not enough,” Elena continued.
“He didn’t care about money.””
“Then what?””
“Control.””
The word echoed.
“He believed the Blackwood family belonged to him. He believed everyone in it existed to serve his vision.””
Adrian looked down.
A painful realization appeared in his eyes.
“My father became like him.””
Elena did not answer.
She didn’t need to.
The silence said enough.
I looked at Elena.
“Why did Clara raise me?””
Her expression softened.
“Because I trusted her.””
“You left me with her.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
The tears in her eyes grew.
“Because I knew if I kept you near me, he would find you.””
“Your father?””
She nodded.
“My father.””
I swallowed.
“You chose to leave me.””
She looked like the words physically hurt her.
“I chose to let you live.””
The answer should have made me angry.
Maybe it did.
But when I looked at her face, I saw something familiar.
The same sadness Clara carried.
The same kind of pain hidden behind love.
“How did you know where I was?””
Elena looked at the necklace around my neck.
“That.””
I touched it.
“This?””
She nodded.
“My mother gave it to me.””
I froze.
“Clara?””
“Yes.””
“She had one too?””
Elena smiled faintly.
“She made two.””
“Why?””
“One for me.””
She looked at me.
“One for my daughter.””
My fingers closed around the necklace.
All those years.
I had thought it was just a gift.
A memory.
A piece of Clara.
But it had been a connection.
A promise.
Adrian walked toward the desk.
“There is something I don’t understand.””
Elena looked at him.
“What?””
“If you were alive…”
He swallowed.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
Her expression broke.
“Because I was afraid.””
“Of me?””
“No.””
She looked at him.
“Of what would happen to you.””
The answer confused him.
“My father was already willing to destroy his own daughter.””
She stepped closer.
“If he knew you were helping me, he would have destroyed you too.””
Adrian shook his head.
“I was your brother.””
“I know.””
“Then you should have trusted me.””
The words were quiet.
But they carried years of pain.
Elena looked at him.
“I was twelve when our mother died.””
Adrian stopped.
“What?””
She continued.
“You remember the night they told you she abandoned us?””
His expression changed.
“Yes.””
“She didn’t.””
The air seemed to disappear.
“She was trying to leave with me.””
Adrian stared.
“What are you saying?””
Elena’s voice became barely audible.
“Our mother discovered what our father had done.””
A terrible silence followed.
“She tried to expose him.””
Adrian stepped back.
“No.””
“She found out about the hidden accounts. The illegal deals. The things he had done to build his empire.””
“No.””
“He stopped her.””
The word hung there.
“Stopped?””
Elena looked at him.
“He made sure nobody would believe her.””
Adrian’s face turned pale.
“What happened to her?””
Elena looked at the floor.
“She died trying to protect us.””
Nobody spoke.
Even the air felt heavy.
The man who had spent decades believing his mother abandoned him had just learned the truth.
She had fought for him.
She had loved him.
And someone had taken that away.
A sudden sound came from the hallway.
Footsteps.
Fast.
Approaching.
Elena’s expression changed immediately.
“They found me.””
Adrian turned.
“Who?””
She looked at him.
“The people who have been protecting your father’s secrets.””
Thomas appeared at the doorway, breathing heavily.
“My lord!””
Adrian looked at him.
“What happened?””
The old butler’s face was pale.
“Someone entered the estate.””
“Who?””
Thomas looked at Elena.
Then at me.
And his voice dropped.
“The person leading them…”
A pause.
“…is the man who has controlled the Blackwood family since your father’s death.””
Adrian narrowed his eyes.
“My father is dead.””
Thomas shook his head.
“No.””
The words froze everyone.
“He was never the one giving orders.””
Adrian stared.
“Then who?””
Thomas looked toward the entrance hall.
A figure appeared at the end of the corridor.
A man in a dark suit.
Older.
Calm.
Smiling.
And when Adrian saw him, his expression changed.
Because he recognized him.
The man who had been beside the Blackwood family for thirty years.
The man everyone trusted.
The man who knew every secret.

Thomas whispered:
“Your uncle.””
