Chapter 4: The Stranger Behind The Locked Door
The voice disappeared into the darkness.
For several seconds, nobody moved.
The library remained frozen in silence.
The only sound was the faint ticking of the old grandfather clock standing against the far wall.
Tick.
Tick.
Tick.
I stood behind Adrian, barely breathing.
His body had changed completely.
Moments earlier, he had been a grieving son trying to understand a lost piece of his past.
Now he was something else.
Alert.
Focused.
Dangerously calm.
His eyes moved across the darkness, searching every corner of the library.
“Show yourself,” he said.
His voice was quiet.
But there was a warning beneath it.
A warning that made even me understand why people feared him.
No answer came.
Then suddenly, the lights flickered back on.
The library was empty.
The doors were still closed.
The windows were locked.
Nobody was there.
Thomas rushed forward and checked the hallway.
“My lord…”
Adrian followed him.
“Search every room.””
“Yes.””
“Now.””
The butler immediately left.
I remained standing near the desk, staring at the envelope with my name written on it.
My name.
A name Clara had chosen.
A name that suddenly felt like it belonged to a completely different person.
Adrian returned a few moments later.
His face was unreadable.
But his hands were clenched.
“Who was that?”” I asked.
He did not answer.
“Adrian.””
It was the first time I said his name instead of calling him my lord.
He noticed.
For some reason, that made him look even more serious.
“I don’t know.””
“You recognized the voice.””
His eyes shifted away.
“No.””
I knew he was lying.
“You did.””
Silence.
Then he sighed.
“There are people who would do anything to keep old secrets buried.””
“That isn’t an answer.””
“No.””
He looked at me.
“It isn’t.””
For a moment, I saw something behind his cold expression.
Fear.
Not for himself.
For me.
That frightened me more.
“Open the envelope,” he said.
I looked down.
“You think I should?””
“Yes.””
“Even after someone just threatened you because of it?””
His expression hardened.
“That is exactly why you should.””
I hesitated.
The envelope felt impossible to open.
Because I knew whatever was inside would change everything again.
But I had spent my entire life waiting for answers.
I could not turn away now.
Slowly, I broke the seal.
Inside was a letter.
Only one page.
The paper was thin and old.
The handwriting immediately made my chest tighten.
Clara.
I sat down.
My hands trembled as I read.
*My dear Evelyn,*
I stopped.
Evelyn.
My name.
Not the name everyone at the estate knew.
The name only Clara had used when we were alone.
I continued.
*If you are reading this, then the truth has finally reached you. I prayed this day would come, but I also feared it.*
My vision blurred slightly.
*You were never unwanted. You were never abandoned. You were loved before you ever opened your eyes.*
I pressed my lips together.
Those words hurt.
Because they were the exact words I had spent my whole life needing to hear.
*Your mother loved you more than anything in this world. She fought to keep you safe. She made a choice no mother should ever have to make.*
I looked up.
Adrian was watching me.
His expression was painful.
He wanted to know what the letter said.
But he also seemed afraid.
I continued.
*Your mother was Elena Blackwood. She was Adrian’s younger sister.*
The room became silent.
I looked at Adrian.
His eyes closed.
Even though he already knew, hearing it from Clara made it real.
*When your grandfather discovered Elena had a child, he believed you were a threat to the family’s future. He wanted control. He wanted obedience. He wanted the Blackwood name to continue exactly as he planned.*
My fingers tightened around the paper.
*Your mother begged him to leave you alone. She begged your father to protect you. But nobody could stop what happened next.*
A cold feeling moved through me.
*The night you were born, you disappeared from the family records.*
I swallowed.
*Everyone was told you had died.*
I stopped reading.
The words became impossible.
Dead.
That was the story they created.
I had not been abandoned.
I had been erased.
Adrian stepped closer.
“Evelyn…”
I looked at him.
The sympathy in his eyes almost broke me.
“I was dead?””
His expression changed.
“No.””
“But that’s what they told everyone.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
His jaw tightened.
“Because someone wanted you gone.””
I looked back at the letter.
There were more words.
*I took you away because I promised your mother I would protect you. She knew she could not trust the Blackwood family anymore.*
My breathing became uneven.
*Before she disappeared, Elena gave me one instruction.*
I continued reading.
*“Keep my daughter alive. Keep her away from the name Blackwood until the name becomes safe.””*
A tear fell onto the paper.
Clara had kept her promise.
All those years.
Every sacrifice.
Every difficult day.
She had protected me.
The letter continued.
*Adrian was only a child when this happened. He did not know. Please remember this. Your brother did not abandon you.*
I looked up.
Brother.
The word felt strange.
Impossible.
Adrian looked away.
I wondered what he was feeling.
He had lost his mother.
Lost his sister.
And now he had found a person who carried pieces of both.
*If Adrian discovers the truth, tell him this:*
I read the final lines slowly.
*You were not too late to save Elena. But you are not too late to protect her daughter.*
The letter ended there.
The silence afterward felt endless.
I placed the paper down.
Neither of us spoke.
Then Adrian quietly said:
“My sister.””
His voice broke.
I looked at him.
“She had a daughter.””
I nodded.
“And that daughter was you.””
Another nod.
He turned away.
For a powerful man, he looked incredibly fragile.
“I spent twenty years believing she left me.””
I didn’t know what to say.
“My sister was alive.””
His voice became quieter.
“She had a child.””
He wiped his face quickly, almost embarrassed by the emotion.
“And I knew nothing.””
I stood.
“Adrian…”
He looked at me.
“I don’t know what I’m supposed to feel.””
That honesty surprised me.
“I don’t know what I’m supposed to call you.””
The words hung between us.
I looked down.
“I don’t know either.””
For a moment, we were not a wealthy estate owner and a maid.
We were two strangers standing in the ruins of a family secret.
Then Adrian stepped closer.
Not as a master.
As someone trying to reach a person he had just discovered was family.
“Evelyn.””
Hearing him say my name felt different.
“I’m sorry.””
The apology shocked me.
“For what?””
“For every year you spent alone.””
I looked away.
He continued.
“For every birthday where nobody told you who you were.””
My eyes burned.
“For every moment you thought nobody wanted you.””
I could not answer.
Because those words touched every wound I had spent years hiding.
Before I could speak, the library door suddenly opened.
Thomas rushed inside.
His face was pale.
“My lord.””
Adrian turned.
“What happened?””
The old butler held a small object in his hand.
Something metallic.
Something old.
“We found the person who entered the manor.””
Adrian’s expression changed.
“Who?””
Thomas looked at me.
Then at Adrian.
And slowly placed the object on the desk.
A necklace.
A silver necklace with a small black stone.
I recognized it immediately.
My hand flew to my throat.
Because I had one exactly like it.
The necklace Clara gave me when I was a child.
Adrian stared at the object.
“Where did you find this?””
Thomas swallowed.
“In the east wing.””
“That wing has been locked for fifteen years.””
“Yes.””
Adrian stepped closer.
“Then how did someone get inside?””
Thomas looked toward the darkness outside the library.
“My lord…”
His voice lowered.
“The person we found was not an intruder.””
A pause.
“He was someone who used to live here.””
Adrian froze.
“Who?””
Thomas looked at him.
“The man your family buried with the rest of this secret.””
The room became ice cold.
Then Thomas whispered the name.
May you like
And Adrian’s face lost all color.
“Your father.””
