Chapter 7: The Wife Who Knew Too Much
The words came from Mia’s mouth.
Small.
Broken.
Impossible.
“Mommy was there.””
Everyone looked at Emily.
And Emily looked like she had just been sentenced.
For ten years, I had trusted that woman with everything.
My fears.
My dreams.
My children.
My entire life.
Now I was standing in the same room with a child who had been hidden behind my wall, and she was telling me my wife was there the night I disappeared.
“Ryan…”
Emily’s voice shook.
I held up my hand.
“No.””
She stopped.
I didn’t recognize my own voice.
It was calm.
Too calm.
“Let her finish.””
Mia looked terrified.
I crouched down.
“Mia, sweetheart, what happened?””
She looked at Emily.
Then at me.
“I don’t want Mommy to be angry.””
My heart broke.
“No one is angry at you.””
Emily started crying.
“Mia…”
The little girl flinched.
That tiny reaction told me more than any confession could.
I stood up slowly.
“Don’t.””
Emily covered her mouth.
“Ryan, I never hurt her.””
“But you scared her.””
“I was trying to protect her.””
The same words.
Everyone kept saying the same words.
Protect.
Save.
Hide.
But all I saw were broken pieces left behind.
“Protect her from what?”” I asked.
Emily looked at the floor.
“From the truth.””
Victor laughed quietly.
“There it is.””
I turned toward him.
“Stop.””
For once, he did.
Because even he knew this moment belonged to Emily.
I stepped closer to my wife.
“How long have you known?””
She wiped her tears.
“About Mia?””
“No.””
I stared at her.
“About everything.””
Emily closed her eyes.
“I knew before we got married.””
The room went silent.
I felt like I couldn’t hear anything anymore.
“You knew before we got married?””
She nodded.
My hands curled into fists.
“You knew I had a daughter.””
“Yes.””
“You knew my father was alive.””
“Yes.””
“You knew my mother was alive.””
“Yes.””
I laughed softly.
A painful sound.
“What didn’t you know?””
Emily looked destroyed.
“Ryan…”
“No.””
I shook my head.
“You don’t get to say my name like everything is normal.””
She looked away.
“I loved you.””
The words hurt.
Because a part of me still believed them.
And that made everything worse.
“If you loved me,” I whispered, “how could you let me wake up every morning thinking my life was something it wasn’t?””
Emily cried.
“Because when you woke up, you didn’t remember.””
“That doesn’t make it okay.””
“I know.””
She looked at me.
“I know.””
For a moment, nobody spoke.
Then my father stepped forward.
“Ryan.””
I turned.
“What?””
“There is something you need to understand.””
I almost laughed.
“Another thing?””
His face tightened.
“Yes.””
I waited.
“When you woke up after the accident, you weren’t just missing memories.””
“What then?””
He looked at Clara.
“She removed them.””
I turned toward my mother.
My anger shifted.
“What?””
Clara looked down.
“I had no choice.””
“No.””
My voice became louder.
“You don’t get to say that.””
She flinched.
“I watched you die once.””
“Apparently not.””
The words hit her.
Good.
For the first time, I wanted someone else to feel the pain I had carried without knowing why.
Clara’s eyes filled with tears.
“Ryan, your brain was damaged. You remembered Victor. You remembered what happened that night.””
“And?””
“You were trying to go back.””
“Back where?””
“To Mia.””
I looked at my daughter.
Clara continued.
“Your memories were returning too quickly. The doctors warned us that the trauma could kill you.””
“So you erased them?””
“I suppressed them.””
“Same thing.””
She looked broken.
“I made a choice.””
“A choice for me?””
“Yes.””
I stepped closer.
“No.””
My voice dropped.
“A choice for yourself.””
She had no answer.
Because maybe that was the truth everyone in this room had been avoiding.
They had all made choices.
And every choice had taken something from me.
A loud sound came from outside.
A vehicle.
Then another.
Daniel looked toward the window.
“We need to move.””
Nobody listened.
I was done running.
“No.””
Everyone turned.
I looked at Daniel.
“No more hiding.””
Then I looked at Victor.
“No more threats.””
Then Emily.
“No more secrets.””
I pointed toward the documents.
“I want the whole truth.””
Victor smiled.
“You finally sound like yourself.””
I ignored him.
I looked at Emily.
“Start.””
She took a deep breath.
“The night of the accident, you found proof that Victor was involved in illegal activities.””
I nodded slowly.
“Okay.””
“You wanted to expose him.””
“Yes.””
“But before you could, someone betrayed you.””
“Who?””
Emily looked at Clara.
Then at my father.
Then back at me.
“I don’t know.””
I stared.
“You don’t know?””
She shook her head.
“I knew someone gave Victor information. I just didn’t know who.””
My eyes narrowed.
“But Mia knows.””
Everyone looked at the little girl.
Mia held onto Daniel’s hand.
“I saw someone.””
“Who?””
She looked afraid.
“Someone from the family.””
The room froze.
“Who?””
Mia shook her head.
“I don’t know the name.””
She closed her eyes.
“But I remember the necklace.””
Everyone looked confused.
Except Clara.
Her hand immediately went to her necklace.
A silver chain.
The same one she had worn my entire life.
Mia pointed.
“That one.””
Nobody moved.
Clara’s face went pale.
“No.””
Mia started crying.
“That’s what they were wearing.””
My father stared at Clara.
“Is that possible?””
Clara stepped backward.
“No.””
But her voice lacked confidence.
I looked at my mother.
My entire world had already collapsed.
But somehow, it found another floor to fall through.
“Mom.””
She looked at me.
“Tell me the truth.””
Her lips trembled.
“Ryan…”
“Was it you?””
The silence was unbearable.
Then something happened I never expected.
Victor laughed.
Not a cruel laugh.
A surprised one.
“Well.””
Everyone looked at him.
“This is interesting.””
My father moved toward Clara.
“What did you do?””
Clara shook her head.
“I didn’t betray him.””
“Then why does she recognize your necklace?””
“I don’t know.””
Victor smiled.
“I do.””
I turned toward him.
“Explain.””
Victor looked at Clara.
“You never told him what happened after the crash.””
Clara’s face changed.
Victor continued.
“You never told him where you were the night he lost his memories.””
My heart raced.
“Where were you?””
Clara said nothing.
“Mom.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I was at the hospital.””
“With me?””
She shook her head.
“No.””
A horrible feeling moved through me.
“Then where?””
She whispered:
“With Victor.””
The room exploded.
My father stepped back.
Emily covered her mouth.
Daniel looked shocked.
Even Victor looked surprised.
I stared at my mother.
“No.””
Clara cried.
“Ryan, listen.””
“No.””
I backed away.
“You were with him?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
She looked at Victor.
And for the first time…
Victor looked afraid.
Because he knew what she was about to say.
Clara whispered:
“Because Victor wasn’t the person who caused your accident.””
Everyone froze.
She looked directly at me.
“He was trying to stop it.””
My breath caught.
“What?””
She pointed at the old documents.
“The person who wanted you gone…”
A tear rolled down her face.
“Was someone much closer.””
The lights flickered.
A phone rang.
Everyone looked toward the hidden room.
Again.
The same phone.
The same impossible phone.
Daniel picked it up.
This time, there was no voicemail.
There was a live call.
A voice came through.
My voice.
Older.
Terrified.
“Ryan…”
Everyone froze.
The recording wasn’t old.
It was happening now.
My voice whispered:
“Do not trust my mother.””
The room went silent.
May you like
Then the voice added:
“Because she is the reason Mia disappeared.””
