Chapter 3: The Man Who Stole My Past
The voice from downstairs froze every person in the room.
I didn’t know how I knew it.
I didn’t remember a face.
I didn’t remember a name.
But my body recognized him before my mind did.
My hands began shaking.
My chest tightened.
And somewhere deep inside me, buried beneath ten years of missing memories, something screamed.
Run.
“Ryan,” Emily whispered.
She was holding Lily tightly against her.
Mia had disappeared back into the hidden space behind the wall, covering her ears with both hands.
Daniel stood in front of us.
Protecting us.
The same man who had been hiding inside my house.
The same man I thought was part of the nightmare.
But now he looked like the only person who understood the danger.
“Who is he?”” I whispered.
Daniel didn’t look back.
“You really don’t remember.””
It wasn’t a question.
It was a fact.
I hated those words.
Because everyone in the room knew something about me that I didn’t.
My own life felt like a book someone else had already read.
“I asked you who he is.””
Daniel tightened his jaw.
“His name is Victor.””
The name hit me strangely.
A flash.
A dark hallway.
A man’s hand on my shoulder.
A voice saying:
“You should have listened.””
Then it vanished.
I grabbed my head.
A sharp pain shot through my skull.
“Ryan?””
Emily rushed toward me.
I pushed her hand away.
Not because I wanted to hurt her.
Because I didn’t know what to believe anymore.
“Don’t.””
The word hurt her.
I saw it.
But I couldn’t stop.
Not after ten years of lies.
A loud knock echoed from downstairs.
Three slow knocks.
Everyone went silent.
Then Victor spoke again.
“Ryan, I know you’re up there.””
His voice carried through the house.
Calm.
Confident.
Like he owned the place.
“I’ve been waiting a long time for this conversation.””
Daniel whispered:
“He wants you to come down.””
“Why?””
“Because he knows you’re confused.””
I looked at him.
“And?””
“And confused people make mistakes.””
Another memory flashed.
A hospital room.
A man standing beside my bed.
A voice saying:
“Your family needs protection from people who want to hurt you.””
I blinked.
Gone.
I looked at Daniel.
“Why do I remember pieces?””
“Because your brain is fighting to bring back what was taken.””
“What was taken?””
Daniel looked toward the stairs.
“Your life.””
Before I could answer, Victor called again.
“Emily.””
My wife froze.
The fact that he knew her name made my stomach twist.
“Come downstairs.””
Emily stepped backward.
“No.””
Victor laughed quietly.
“You always were better at hiding than telling the truth.””
I looked at Emily.
“You know him.””
She didn’t answer.
That was enough.
“Emily.””
Tears filled her eyes.
“Yes.””
The answer felt like a knife.
“How?””
She looked away.
“I knew him before you did.””
The room went silent.
Daniel looked angry.
“Emily.””
She shook her head.
“No more.””
She looked at me.
“No more lies.””
For the first time all night, I saw something different in her expression.
Not fear.
Guilt.
“I met Victor through your father.””
My heart stopped.
“My father?””
I barely remembered my father.
He died when I was young.
“What does my father have to do with this?””
Emily swallowed.
“Everything.””
Another pain exploded in my head.
A memory.
A younger version of me.
A man yelling.
A door slamming.
A photograph burning.
Then darkness.
I stumbled.
Daniel caught my arm.
“Ryan.””
I pulled away.
“Why didn’t anyone tell me?””
Emily cried.
“Because your father made sure nobody could.””
I stared at her.
“What does that mean?””
Before she could answer, glass shattered downstairs.
Victor had stopped waiting.
“He’s inside,” Daniel said.
Panic moved through the room.
“Call the police,” I whispered.
Emily looked at me.
“We can’t.””
“Why?””
She hesitated.
And that hesitation terrified me.
“Because Victor owns the people who would come.””
I stared at her.
“What?””
Daniel moved toward the closet.
“We need to leave.””
“Through the wall?””
He nodded.
I almost laughed.
Ten minutes ago, a hidden child behind my wall would have sounded impossible.
Now it was our escape route.
The world had changed too quickly.
Daniel opened the wooden panel wider.
“Mia.””
The little girl slowly crawled out.
Daniel reached for her.
But she looked at me first.
“Are you leaving me?””
The question destroyed me.
Because I knew the answer she was afraid of.
Everyone had left her before.
I crouched down.
I didn’t know if she was my daughter.
I didn’t know if Emily had betrayed me.
I didn’t know who was telling the truth.
But I knew one thing.
A child was scared.
And she needed someone.
“No,” I whispered.
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I won’t leave you.””
She reached for my hand.
And when her fingers touched mine, another memory exploded.
A little girl laughing.
A swing in the backyard.
A tiny hand holding my finger.
A voice saying:
“Daddy, don’t let go.””
I gasped.
“Mia.””
She looked at me.
“You remember?””
I couldn’t answer.
Because I did.
Not everything.
Just a moment.
A tiny piece.
But it was real.
I had held her before.
I had loved her before.
Then a gunshot echoed through the house.
Everyone froze.
Lily screamed.
Daniel pushed us toward the hidden passage.
“Move!””
We crawled through the narrow space.
Dust filled the air.
The walls were covered with old scratches.
Drawings.
Little marks.
I stopped.
There were hundreds of them.
Small drawings made by a child.
A family.
A house.
A man holding a little girl’s hand.
I touched one.
My breath caught.
At the bottom was a name written in messy handwriting.
Mia.
And underneath:
Daddy loves me.
I nearly broke.
Ten years.
Ten years of my life missing.
Ten years of my daughter living in darkness.
Behind us, footsteps entered Lily’s room.
Victor.
“Ryan?””
His voice was closer.
Daniel pulled me forward.
“Don’t stop.””
But I did.
Because I heard Victor say something that made my blood run cold.
“She was never your daughter.””
I turned.
“What?””
Victor stood at the entrance of the hidden passage.
The darkness covered half his face.
He smiled.
“You really thought Emily told you everything?””
Emily froze.
Victor looked at her.
“Tell him.””
She shook her head.
“Victor, please.””
“Tell him what happened the night of the accident.””
My heart raced.
Emily looked at me.
Her lips trembled.
“Ryan…”
I stepped out of the passage.
“Tell me.””
Victor smiled.
“That’s right.””
He lifted the old photograph.
“The truth is the one thing nobody could take from you.””
I stared at Emily.
“What happened that night?””
She cried.
“You weren’t alone in the car.””
Silence.
I felt the air leave my lungs.
Victor stepped closer.
“You had someone with you.””
My mind screamed.
No.
That wasn’t possible.
The accident report.
The hospital.
Everything I knew.
All of it.
Victor whispered:
“You were driving to meet your real family.””
I looked at Mia.
Then Emily.
Then Daniel.
“Real family?””
Victor smiled wider.
“And when you crashed…”
He paused.
“The person sitting beside you disappeared.””
A horrible feeling crawled over me.
“Who?””
Victor looked directly into my eyes.
“The person who knows exactly why Mia had to be hidden.””
The lights suddenly flickered back on.
And standing behind Victor, holding a blood-stained photograph, was someone I never expected to see.
May you like
Someone who should have been dead.
My father.
