Chapter 5: The Phone That Held Ten Years of Secrets
The phone kept ringing.
My name remained glowing on the cracked screen.
*Ryan.*
Not Daniel.
Not Emily.
Not Victor.
Me.
The impossible thing wasn’t that someone had saved my name in an old phone.
The impossible thing was the date.
The screen showed a battery percentage that somehow still remained alive.
And beneath my name was a message.
*27 missed calls.*
My hands went cold.
“That phone shouldn’t work,” Daniel whispered.
I looked at him.
“What do you mean?””
He stared at the device like it was something dangerous.
“Because it was destroyed.””
“By who?””
Nobody answered.
I took the phone from his hand.
The moment my fingers touched it, pain exploded behind my eyes.
A memory.
A rainy night.
My hands gripping this exact phone.
A little girl crying.
A voice saying:
“Daddy, promise you’ll come back.””
Then darkness.
I dropped the phone.
Emily caught her breath.
“Ryan?””
I looked at Mia.
She was crying silently.
“You remember.””
I shook my head.
“I don’t know.””
But that was a lie.
Because somewhere inside me, I did.
Not everything.
Not enough.
But pieces were returning.
Pieces that hurt.
I picked up the phone again.
The screen changed.
A voicemail notification appeared.
*1 unheard message.*
Recorded ten years ago.
My thumb hovered over it.
Nobody spoke.
Everyone waited.
Even Victor.
For the first time since he entered the house, he looked uncertain.
I pressed play.
Static filled the room.
Then my own voice came through.
Older.
Tired.
Afraid.
“Ryan…”
I stopped breathing.
It was me.
My voice.
From a memory I didn’t have.
“If you’re hearing this, something went wrong.””
The recording crackled.
“Mia is safe. Emily knows what to do. Daniel knows where to take her.””
My eyes moved toward Daniel.
He looked down.
The recording continued.
“But if Victor finds her…”
A pause.
Then my voice became quieter.
“Do not trust anyone who says they’re protecting you.””
The room went still.
My own words.
My own warning.
A warning I had left for myself.
The recording continued.
“Ryan, listen carefully. You may not remember this.””
My chest tightened.
“You may wake up believing your life is different.””
Emily covered her mouth.
“But the truth is…”
Static interrupted.
Then:
“You have another daughter.””
Mia started crying.
I closed my eyes.
The words hurt more than I expected.
Because they sounded like a stranger telling me about my own life.
The recording continued.
“I’m sorry, Mia.””
A child’s small voice appeared in the background.
“Daddy?””
My heart broke.
The little girl on the recording was younger.
But it was her.
Mia.
“I promise I’ll come back.””
My own voice shook.
“I promise.””
Then another sound.
A door opening.
Someone shouting.
The recording became chaotic.
A man’s voice.
Victor.
“Ryan!””
The recording ended.
Silence.
Nobody moved.
Then Victor spoke.
“You always were good at leaving messages.””
I turned toward him.
“You knew about the phone.””
He didn’t answer.
“You knew I recorded that.””
“Yes.””
My anger rose.
“You knew I had a daughter.””
“Yes.””
“You knew I was trying to protect her.””
“Yes.””
“Then why did you let me lose everything?””
Victor’s face remained cold.
“Because you chose the wrong people.””
I laughed.
A bitter laugh.
“You expect me to believe that?””
“No.””
He looked at Emily.
“I expect you to ask her.””
I turned.
“Emily.””
She looked terrified.
“What else?””
She closed her eyes.
“Ryan…”
“What else did you hide?””
The silence lasted too long.
That was the answer.
“There’s more.””
Daniel looked at Emily.
“You can’t.””
She looked at him.
“I have to.””
She sat down slowly.
Her hands were shaking.
“The night of the accident…”
I waited.
“You weren’t driving home.””
My eyebrows pulled together.
“What?””
“You were going somewhere.””
“Where?””
She looked at Mia.
“To get her.””
My heart stopped.
I looked at my daughter.
“You were coming for her?””
Emily nodded.
“Yes.””
“Then why was she hidden?””
Her voice broke.
“Because someone found out.””
“Who?””
She looked at Victor.
“He knew you were going to expose him.””
Victor smiled slightly.
“You’re making me sound like a villain.””
Nobody responded.
Emily continued.
“Ryan discovered documents showing Victor had been moving money through fake companies.””
I looked at Victor.
“You stole from my family?””
He shrugged.
“Your family stole from everyone.””
“What does that mean?””
He stepped closer.
“Your father built an empire on lies.””
My father’s face darkened.
“Don’t.””
Victor ignored him.
“You think this is a simple story? Good people versus bad people?””
He laughed softly.
“Your father destroyed lives too.””
I looked at my father.
“Is that true?””
He didn’t answer.
And somehow, that hurt more.
“Dad.””
The word felt strange after so many years.
His eyes met mine.
“I made mistakes.””
“What kind?””
He looked away.
“Dangerous ones.””
I felt betrayed all over again.
Everyone had pieces of the truth.
Everyone except me.
Victor walked toward the old photograph.
“You want to know why your father disappeared?””
My father stepped forward.
“Stop.””
Victor smiled.
“He didn’t die.””
I stared.
“I know.””
“No.””
Victor looked at me.
“You don’t know anything.””
He pointed at my father.
“He disappeared because he made a deal.””
My father’s expression changed.
“What?””
Victor laughed.
“Tell him.””
Nobody moved.
“Tell your son who you traded.””
My father looked furious.
“You have no idea what you’re talking about.””
“Oh, I do.””
Victor leaned closer.
“You traded your own family to save yourself.””
The accusation hung in the air.
I looked at my father.
“Dad?””
He looked exhausted.
Not angry.
Not defensive.
Just tired.
“I was trying to stop something worse.””
“What?””
He didn’t answer.
A loud crash interrupted us.
Everyone turned.
The front windows shattered.
Glass sprayed across the floor.
Emily screamed.
Daniel grabbed Mia.
Victor immediately moved toward the door.
“What are you doing?”” I asked.
He looked back.
“Leaving.””
“Why?””
His expression was serious.
“Because the person you should be afraid of isn’t me.””
The room went silent.
“What?””
Victor looked toward the broken window.
“They found us.””
Outside, headlights appeared.
Not one car.
Several.
Black vehicles surrounded the house.
Daniel’s face turned white.
“No.””
My father whispered:
“They’re here.””
I looked outside.
“Who?””
Nobody answered.
Then the front door exploded open.
People rushed inside.
Not police.
Not strangers.
Men wearing suits.
Professional.
Armed.
A woman walked behind them.
Everyone froze when they saw her.
Emily whispered:
“No…”
The woman looked around the room.
Her eyes landed on Mia.
Then on me.
And she smiled.
“Ryan.””
I felt my entire body go cold.
Because I knew her.
Somewhere.
Somehow.
A memory surfaced.
A hospital room.
A woman standing beside my bed.
A woman telling me:
“Your daughter died.””
I stared at her.
The woman who had stolen ten years from me.
The woman who had convinced me Mia never existed.
My mother.
But my mother had died fifteen years ago.
The woman smiled.
“You finally found your way back to the truth.””
Mia screamed.
“Grandma!””
I froze.
Grandma.
My mother.
Impossible.
The woman looked at me.
“I’m sorry, Ryan.””
May you like
She stepped closer.
“But you were never supposed to remember.””
