Chapter 4: The Father Who Was Supposed To Be Dead
My father was dead.
I knew that.
Everyone knew that.
I had stood beside his grave when I was nineteen years old.
I remembered the cold morning.
The gray sky.
The sound of dirt hitting the wooden coffin.
I remembered my mother holding my arm so tightly her fingers left marks on my skin.
I remembered telling myself that losing my father was the first pain I would never recover from.
But now he was standing in front of me.
Older.
Different.
Alive.
Holding a blood-stained photograph.
My mind refused to accept what my eyes were seeing.
“No.””
The word escaped my mouth.
My father tilted his head slightly.
“Ryan.””
Hearing my name from him broke something inside me.
Not because I was happy.
Because I remembered.
A hundred tiny memories came rushing back.
Him teaching me how to ride a bike.
Him carrying me home after I broke my arm.
Him standing in the doorway the night he left.
Wait.
Left.
Not died.
The memory changed.
I grabbed the wall.
My breathing became uneven.
“He didn’t die.””
Everyone looked at me.
Emily’s face turned pale.
Daniel lowered his eyes.
Victor smiled.
“No,” Victor said softly.
“He didn’t.””
My father looked at Victor.
“You were never supposed to bring him this far.””
Victor laughed.
“And you were never supposed to come back.””
The two men stared at each other like they had been enemies for decades.
I looked between them.
“Someone needs to explain.””
My voice shook.
“Right now.””
Nobody moved.
Then my father stepped forward.
Daniel immediately raised his hand.
“Don’t.””
My father stopped.
“Daniel.””
“You don’t get to walk back into his life after ten years.””
My father’s expression hardened.
“I was protecting him.””
Daniel laughed bitterly.
“By disappearing?””
“I had no choice.””
“There is always a choice.””
Their words hit me harder than their anger.
Because they sounded like people who had been fighting this battle for a long time.
A battle I never knew existed.
I looked at Emily.
“You knew.””
She started crying.
“Ryan…”
“You knew my father was alive.””
She closed her eyes.
“Yes.””
The answer destroyed the last piece of trust I had left.
I stepped away from her.
“How many people knew?””
Nobody answered.
I looked at Lily.
My little girl was hiding behind Emily’s leg.
She looked scared.
I immediately felt guilty.
This wasn’t her burden.
None of this was hers.
I walked toward her slowly.
“Lily.””
She looked up.
“Is Mommy in trouble?””
The question broke my heart.
I crouched down.
“No.””
“But everyone is yelling.””
I forced myself to smile.
“Sometimes adults keep secrets because they think they’re protecting people.””
She looked toward Mia.
“Is Mia my sister?””
The room went silent.
I looked at the little girl behind me.
Mia stared at the floor.
Waiting.
I didn’t know the answer.
But something inside me already did.
“Yes,” I whispered.
Mia looked up.
For the first time since I found her, she smiled.
A tiny smile.
Like she had been waiting years to hear that one word.
Sister.
Victor suddenly clapped slowly.
“How touching.””
I turned toward him.
“Why are you here?””
His smile disappeared.
“You still don’t understand.””
“Then explain.””
He looked at my father.
“Ask him.””
My father’s expression changed.
“Victor.””
“No.””
Victor pointed at him.
“Tell your son what happened.””
My father looked at me.
The room became heavy.
“I was investigating something.””
I frowned.
“Investigating what?””
“Your grandfather’s company.””
I stared.
“My grandfather?””
He nodded.
“You were born into something much bigger than you knew.””
I almost laughed.
“My entire life has been a lie, and you’re telling me this is about a company?””
“It’s about power.””
My father looked at Victor.
“And people who will kill to keep it.””
Victor smiled.
“Still dramatic after all these years.””
My father ignored him.
“Ryan, before the accident, I discovered financial records showing that someone close to our family was stealing from the company.””
“Who?””
My father looked at Emily.
My stomach dropped.
“No.””
Emily started crying.
“Ryan, listen.””
“No.””
I backed away.
“Not again.””
Victor stepped closer.
“Your wife wasn’t the thief.””
Everyone looked at him.
Victor continued.
“She was the messenger.””
Emily covered her face.
“What?””
I looked at her.
“What does he mean?””
She whispered:
“I was trying to help you.””
I felt anger rise.
“By hiding my daughter?””
Her tears fell.
“I thought I was protecting her.””
“From who?””
She looked at Victor.
“From him.””
The room went silent.
Victor’s face finally changed.
Only slightly.
But I saw it.
A flash of anger.
Daniel noticed too.
“That’s why he wants Mia.””
I turned.
“What?””
Daniel looked at me.
“Victor didn’t hide Mia.””
He pointed at him.
“He was looking for her.””
My heart raced.
“Why?””
Nobody answered.
Mia suddenly spoke.
“Because I saw something.””
Everyone turned.
The little girl was shaking.
I knelt beside her.
“Mia?””
She looked at Victor.
“When Mommy and Daddy fought, I saw him.””
Victor’s face went cold.
“Don’t listen to her.””
I stood up.
“What did you see?””
Mia held onto my hand.
“He hurt Grandpa.””
My father froze.
Victor laughed.
“A child’s memory.””
“No,” Mia whispered.
“You pushed him.””
The room went completely still.
I looked at my father.
He looked older in that moment.
Not physically.
Emotionally.
Like he had been carrying something too heavy for too long.
“What happened?””
My father looked at me.
“I confronted Victor.””
“About stealing?””
“Yes.””
“And?””
His silence answered.
Victor stepped forward.
“Your father attacked me.””
My father laughed.
A sad, empty sound.
“You’re still lying.””
Victor’s expression hardened.
“I don’t need to explain myself to a man who abandoned his family.””
The words hit.
Because that was the one thing I still couldn’t understand.
My father looked at me.
“I left because staying would have gotten you killed.””
I stared.
“What?””
“After the accident, Victor thought you were dead.””
A chill moved through me.
“He thought?””
My father nodded.
“You weren’t supposed to survive.””
The same words again.
The same impossible truth.
My accident wasn’t an accident.
Someone had tried to kill me.
And everyone I loved knew.
Except me.
I looked at Emily.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
Her voice broke.
“Because the doctors said your memories might return slowly.””
“That’s not an answer.””
“No.””
She wiped her face.
“It’s not.””
She stepped closer.
“When you woke up, you didn’t remember Mia.””
My heart tightened.
“You knew I had forgotten my daughter.””
“Yes.””
“And you still let me live like she never existed.””
Emily broke down.
“I was afraid.””
“Of what?””
She looked toward Victor.
“Of what he would do if he knew you remembered.””
Victor smiled.
“You see, Ryan? Everyone was afraid of me.””
I stared at him.
“Why?””
His smile faded.
“Because I know what really happened.””
A sudden silence.
“What does that mean?””
Victor looked at my father.
Then at Daniel.
Then at Emily.
“Ask them why Mia was hidden.””
Nobody spoke.
Victor took one more step forward.
“Ask them why your daughter spent years living inside your own house.””
My blood ran cold.
I looked at Daniel.
“You knew?””
Daniel looked away.
“Ryan…”
“You knew she was here?””
“Yes.””
The betrayal felt unbearable.
“You all knew.””
Daniel’s eyes filled with regret.
“I was trying to get her out.””
“Then why didn’t you?””
“Because every time I tried, Victor found us.””
A phone suddenly rang.
Everyone froze.
It wasn’t my phone.
It wasn’t Emily’s.
It came from inside the hidden passage.
Daniel’s face changed.
“That’s impossible.””
He walked toward the wall slowly.
The phone kept ringing.
Once.
Twice.
Three times.
Mia grabbed my hand.
“Don’t answer.””
I looked at her.
“Why?””
Her face was filled with fear.
“Because that’s the phone Daddy gave me.””
My heart stopped.
“Mia…”
She whispered:
“The phone he gave me before he disappeared.””
Daniel reached into the wall and pulled out a small old phone.
The screen lit up.
One name appeared.
A name that made everyone in the room stop breathing.
*Ryan.*
My own name.
May you like
The phone had been calling me.
For ten years.
