Amused

Chapter 6: The Family That Buried the Truth

For several seconds, nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

The woman standing in my doorway looked exactly like my mother.

Not a memory.

Not a dream.

Not a photograph.

Her.

The same sharp eyes.

The same silver necklace she always wore.

The same small scar above her eyebrow from the accident she had when I was a child.

My mind tried to fight what I was seeing.

Because there were things in life you accepted as impossible.

Your dead mother appearing in your house was one of them.

“Mom?””

The word came out before I could stop it.

The woman’s expression softened.

Just slightly.

“Yes, Ryan.””

My knees almost gave out.

I grabbed the table beside me.

“No.””

My father looked at her with anger I had never seen before.

“You shouldn’t have come.””

She looked at him.

“You knew this day would come.””

“You were supposed to stay away from him.””

“And you were supposed to tell him the truth.””

The room filled with silence.

I looked between them.

“You’re both alive.””

Neither answered.

I laughed.

A broken, confused laugh.

“My whole life is a lie.””

Emily stepped closer.

“Ryan…”

I turned toward her.

“No.””

My voice was quiet.

That made everyone stop.

“I don’t want apologies.””

Emily froze.

“I don’t want another explanation.””

I looked around the room.

“My father disappeared.””

My eyes moved to the woman.

“My mother died.””

Then to Victor.

“You tried to kill me.””

Then to Emily.

“And my wife hid an entire child from me.””

My voice cracked.

“Is there anyone in this room who has told me the truth?””

Nobody answered.

And that was the worst answer they could give.

The woman who looked like my mother walked closer.

“My name is Clara.””

I stared at her.

“My mother’s name was Clara.””

She nodded.

“Because I am your mother.””

I shook my head.

“You died.””

She looked down.

“I let you believe that.””

The words felt like a punch.

“Why?””

Her eyes moved toward Mia.

“Because I needed you to forget.””

I looked at Mia.

The little girl was holding Daniel’s hand.

Terrified.

“You made me forget my daughter?””

Clara’s face changed.

Pain.

Real pain.

“I saved your life.””

“No.””

My anger finally broke through.

“You erased my life.””

The room became quiet.

Clara looked like she wanted to argue.

But she didn’t.

Because she knew.

She had no defense.

Victor laughed quietly.

“Now you understand.””

Everyone looked at him.

“You all keep pretending you protected Ryan.””

He shook his head.

“You destroyed him.””

My father stepped toward him.

“You don’t get to act innocent.””

Victor smiled.

“I never said I was.””

That answer surprised me.

He wasn’t denying anything.

He wasn’t pretending.

He was simply waiting.

Waiting for me to see something.

I looked at him.

“What do you want?””

Victor looked at Mia.

“I want what your father stole.””

My stomach tightened.

“What did he steal?””

Clara answered.

“The truth.””

I looked at her.

“What does that mean?””

She walked to the table and placed a folder down.

Old.

Worn.

Filled with papers.

“Before the accident, Ryan discovered something.””

My father looked away.

“He discovered that the company wasn’t just losing money.””

Clara opened the folder.

“He discovered a network.””

I looked at the documents.

Names.

Accounts.

Transactions.

My head started hurting.

“Why do I feel like I’ve seen this before?””

Clara looked at me.

“Because you have.””

She placed a finger on one page.

“You hid copies of these files.””

I stared.

“I did?””

“Yes.””

“Where?””

She looked toward the wall.

My heart stopped.

The wall.

The hidden room.

Mia.

I slowly turned.

“What?””

Daniel’s face changed.

“No.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

He shook his head.

“Ryan, don’t.””

I walked toward the broken panel.

Inside the hidden space were old drawings.

Old toys.

Old memories.

And behind a loose wooden board near the floor…

Something.

My hands trembled as I pulled it open.

Inside was a small metal box.

Everyone went silent.

I knew that box.

I didn’t know how.

But I did.

My fingers remembered the lock.

The scratches.

The weight.

I opened it.

Inside were documents.

A flash drive.

And a handwritten letter.

My name was written on it.

*For Ryan.*

My breathing stopped.

I opened the letter.

The handwriting was mine.

If you are reading this, it means I failed.

My vision blurred.

I knew they would try to make me forget.

I looked up.

Everyone was watching me.

I continued.

Ryan, do not trust anyone who tells you the accident was random.

My hands shook.

The person responsible is closer than you think.

A cold feeling moved through me.

I looked at Emily.

Then my father.

Then Clara.

The letter continued.

I hid Mia because she saw something she was never supposed to see.

Mia covered her mouth.

I looked at her.

The letter continued.

She saw who betrayed us.

The room went silent.

“Who?”” I whispered.

I turned the page.

The final sentence was written larger.

As if I had written it in a hurry.

The person who betrayed our family is someone you love.

Nobody moved.

Nobody breathed.

Then the lights went out.

Again.

A scream came from downstairs.

Not one of ours.

A stranger.

Daniel immediately pulled Mia closer.

“They’re inside.””

I looked around.

“Who?””

My father reached for something hidden beneath his jacket.

A weapon.

I stared.

“You carry that?””

He looked at me.

“I’ve been running for ten years.””

A sound came from the hallway.

Footsteps.

Slow.

Confident.

Someone walked through the darkness.

Then a voice spoke.

“Ryan.””

My blood froze.

Not because I knew the voice.

Because I recognized the words.

It was the same phrase from the recording.

The same phrase from the night I lost my memories.

“You were never supposed to find that box.””

A figure stepped into the light.

Everyone froze.

Even Victor.

The person standing there wasn’t one of Victor’s men.

It wasn’t a stranger.

It was someone from my own home.

Someone who had been beside me every day.

Someone who had hugged my daughter.

Someone who had told me they loved me.

Emily slowly stepped backward.

Her face went pale.

“No…”

I stared at her.

“What?””

The figure behind us smiled.

“Tell him, Emily.””

She shook her head.

“No.””

The person stepped forward.

“Tell Ryan who gave us the information.””

Emily started crying.

“Please…”

My heart began pounding.

“Emily?””

She looked at me.

And for the first time in ten years…

I saw my wife look truly afraid.

Not of Victor.

Not of my father.

Not of anyone else.

Of the truth.

The stranger whispered:

“She wasn’t protecting Mia.””

A pause.

“She was protecting herself.””

I felt the room spin.

I looked at Emily.

“Is that true?””

Her lips trembled.

“Ryan…”

“Is it true?””

She couldn’t answer.

And then Mia spoke.

A tiny voice.

Full of fear.

“Daddy…”

I looked at her.

“She was there.””

My heart stopped.

“Who?””

Mia pointed at Emily.

“The night you disappeared…”

May you like

Tears rolled down her face.

“Mommy was there.””
