Amused

Chapter 8: The Mother-in-Law's Secret

Patricia Carter chose a quiet restaurant on the outskirts of Chicago.

She arrived twenty minutes early and selected a table in the back corner, away from the windows.

Danielle almost didn't recognize her.

The elegant woman who usually wore designer dresses and perfectly styled hair looked exhausted.

Her hands trembled as she lifted a cup of tea.

"Thank you for coming," Patricia said.

Danielle remained standing.

"I didn't come because I wanted to.""

Patricia nodded.

"I understand.""

"Then tell me why you were accessing my father's documents.""

Patricia looked toward the empty chair.

"Please sit.""

"I'd rather stand.""

For several seconds, neither woman spoke.

Then Patricia reached into her handbag.

She removed a photograph.

It showed Michael as a teenager, standing beside William Hayes.

Danielle stared.

"Where did you get that?""

"Your father gave it to me.""

"When?""

"Before you and Michael got married.""

Danielle felt a cold sensation spread through her chest.

"Why would my father give you a photograph of Michael?""

Patricia looked down.

"Because he knew my son was getting close to you.""

Danielle's jaw tightened.

"How long have you known?""

Patricia closed her eyes.

"Since the beginning.""

The restaurant seemed suddenly too quiet.

Danielle pulled out the chair and sat down.

"Explain.""

Patricia wrapped both hands around her tea.

"Michael was twenty-four when he first met your father. He had just started Carter Maritime. He was ambitious, intelligent, and convinced he would become a major businessman.""

"That sounds familiar.""

"Your father admired his determination at first. He helped Michael secure a meeting with several investors.""

Danielle looked at the photograph.

"But my father said Michael approached him before our wedding.""

"Yes.""

"Why?""

Patricia swallowed.

"Because Michael wanted to know how much money you would inherit.""

Danielle stared at her.

"And you knew?""

Patricia nodded.

"I did.""

"Did you tell my father?""

"I tried to stop him.""

Danielle's voice rose.

"Stop him from what?""

"From marrying you.""

The words hung between them.

Patricia continued.

"Michael had been struggling financially. Carter Maritime was close to bankruptcy. He believed marrying into your family would give him access to the money he needed.""

Danielle felt her stomach tighten.

"Then why did you let the marriage happen?""

Patricia's eyes filled.

"Because I thought he would change.""

Danielle gave a bitter laugh.

"Everyone seems to have thought that.""

Patricia looked at her.

"I know I failed you.""

"You didn't just fail me. You watched your son use me.""

"I tried to intervene.""

"When?""

"Two years after your wedding. I confronted him about Vanessa.""

Danielle went still.

"You knew about Vanessa?""

Patricia nodded.

"Not the entire relationship. But I knew he was seeing someone.""

"Did you tell me?""

"No.""

"Why?""

Patricia looked ashamed.

"Because Michael threatened to cut me off financially.""

Danielle stared at her.

"So you protected your lifestyle.""

Patricia didn't deny it.

"Yes.""

For a moment, Danielle felt more disgust than anger.

Patricia had watched her son humiliate his wife and had chosen silence.

"Why contact me now?""

"Because yesterday Michael came to my house.""

"What did he want?""

"He wanted the original beneficiary schedule.""

Danielle's fingers tightened around the table.

"What did you tell him?""

"That I didn't have it.""

"Did you?""

Patricia hesitated.

Then she opened her handbag again.

She removed a small silver key.

"Your father gave me this.""

Danielle looked at it.

"What does it open?""

"A safe-deposit box.""

"Where?""

"At a private bank in Chicago.""

Danielle reached for the key.

Patricia pulled her hand back.

"Before I give you this, I need you to understand something.""

Danielle looked at her.

"Go ahead.""

"Michael believes Richard Bennett has been helping you. But Richard has been involved in the Northbridge transactions from the beginning.""

Danielle felt her heart sink.

"How?""

Patricia leaned closer.

"Richard's company wasn't just financing Carter Maritime. It was also purchasing assets through a separate investment partnership with Arthur Reed.""

"That would mean—"

"Yes. Richard knew about the transfers.""

Danielle thought of the marina.

Richard standing beside her.

His reassuring voice.

His promise to help.

"Why would he protect me?""

"Because he needed the trust to remain intact long enough to complete a separate transaction.""

Danielle stared at her.

"What transaction?""

Patricia shook her head.

"I don't know all the details. But I heard Michael arguing with Richard last month. They were discussing a document called the Original Beneficiary Schedule.""

Danielle remembered Emily's call.

The document Michael had accessed.

The document he had downloaded.

"Why would Michael need it?""

Patricia looked at the key.

"Because it contains the name of the person who actually controls Northbridge.""

Danielle swallowed.

"Olivia?""

Patricia shook her head.

"Not exactly.""

She slid the key across the table.

"Your father created a separate protective arrangement. Olivia is the beneficiary, but someone else has authority to protect the assets until she reaches adulthood.""

"Who?""

Patricia looked directly into Danielle's eyes.

"You.""

Danielle exhaled.

"I already knew that.""

"No. You don't understand. Your father appointed you as the permanent protector, even if someone else becomes the legal administrator.""

Danielle frowned.

"What's the difference?""

"The administrator can manage the assets. The protector can remove the administrator.""

Danielle slowly understood.

"Then Michael could never take control.""

"Not without removing you first.""

Patricia looked away.

"And that's what he was trying to do.""

Danielle felt a chill.

"How?""

"By creating the false company in your name. If the court declared you responsible for the fraudulent transfers, the trustees could suspend your authority.""

Danielle stared at her.

"He wanted to make me look like the criminal.""

Patricia nodded.

"He wanted to remove you from the trust.""

For several seconds, Danielle couldn't speak.

Then she asked the question that had been haunting her since the marina.

"Was my father afraid Michael would hurt me?""

Patricia looked down.

"He was afraid Michael would do something much worse than hurt you.""

Danielle's voice dropped.

"What?""

Patricia reached into her handbag and removed another envelope.

This one was older.

The paper had yellowed at the edges.

"Your father gave me this three months before he died. He told me to keep it until the day Michael attempted to claim the Northbridge assets.""

Danielle took it.

Inside was a handwritten note.

Patricia,

If Michael has reached this point, it means Arthur has convinced him that the old agreement can be used against my family.

Do not allow him to obtain the original document.

The original agreement does not simply establish ownership.

It contains evidence of the first fraudulent transfer, and the person who authorized it is not Michael.

Danielle looked up.

"Who is it?""

Patricia's eyes filled.

"I think you already know.""

Danielle felt the blood drain from her face.

"Richard?""

Patricia nodded.

"Richard Bennett.""

The pieces began falling into place.

Richard had been present at the marina.

He had been the person presenting the documents.

He had insisted that Michael's authority be suspended.

But he had also been involved in the financing structure that allowed the questionable transactions to occur.

Danielle thought about her father's recording.

If Arthur is involved, be careful.

Perhaps her father had been warning her about both men.

Her phone vibrated.

A message from Daniel Foster.

Danielle, urgent. We received a new filing. Richard Bennett's company has requested emergency control of the Northbridge assets. The hearing has been moved to 9:00 a.m.

Danielle stared at the screen.

Patricia leaned forward.

"What's happened?""

"Richard is making his move.""

Patricia looked frightened.

"Then you need to open the safe-deposit box tonight.""

"Why?""

"Because the original agreement contains something that can stop him.""

Danielle stood.

"Come with me.""

Patricia looked surprised.

"Me?""

"Yes.""

"Why would you want me there?""

Danielle picked up the key.

"Because if you're telling the truth, you have spent years being afraid of your son. I want to know whether you're finally ready to stop protecting him.""

Patricia began to cry.

"I am.""

Danielle didn't comfort her.

Not yet.

They arrived at the bank shortly before closing.

The manager escorted them into a private room.

The safe-deposit box was small, but the contents were carefully organized.

There were property records, old corporate agreements, a sealed envelope, and a thick black notebook.

Danielle opened the envelope first.

Inside was a document titled:

*ORIGINAL NORTHBRIDGE BENEFICIARY AND CONTROL AGREEMENT*

She began reading.

The first pages established the trust structure.

The next pages listed the original investors.

Then she reached the section about the first fraudulent transfer.

A name appeared beside the authorization.

Richard Bennett.

But there was something else.

A second signature.

Arthur Reed.

Both men had approved a transaction that William Hayes later discovered was fraudulent.

Danielle turned the page.

There was a handwritten statement from her father.

Richard and Arthur worked together to conceal the first transfer. Michael was later recruited to create a second structure that would make the money appear to have been moved through Carter Maritime.

Danielle looked at Patricia.

"So Michael wasn't the mastermind.""

Patricia shook her head.

"No. He was the person they thought they could control.""

Danielle turned another page.

A photograph fell from the notebook.

It showed Richard, Arthur, and Michael standing together outside a private office building.

The date was printed on the back.

Three months before Danielle's wedding.

Danielle felt sick.

They had all known one another long before she had met Michael.

She picked up the final document.

It was a letter addressed to the trustees.

If Richard Bennett or Arthur Reed attempts to claim the Northbridge assets, immediately activate the independent succession provision.

Beneath it was a name.

Not Danielle's.

Not Michael's.

Not Olivia's.

A third person.

Danielle read it twice.

Then she looked at Patricia.

"Who is Eleanor Hayes?""

Patricia's eyes widened.

She slowly sat down.

"Your father's sister.""

Danielle shook her head.

"My father told me she died when I was a child.""

Patricia stared at the document.

"That's what everyone was told.""

Danielle's phone rang.

Daniel Foster.

She answered immediately.

"Daniel, we found the original agreement.""

"Good. Danielle, listen carefully. Richard's lawyers are trying to get the trust placed under emergency administration.""

"We have evidence against him.""

"Then bring it to the hearing.""

"There's a name in the succession provision. Eleanor Hayes.""

Silence.

Then Daniel spoke.

"Danielle, that's impossible.""

"Why?""

"Because I just received a call from a woman claiming to be Eleanor Hayes.""

Danielle gripped the phone.

"Where is she?""

May you like

Daniel's answer made her blood run cold.

"She's outside my office.""
