Chapter 7: The Company in My Name
For several seconds, Danielle couldn't speak.
She stared at the document Margaret Ellis had placed in front of her.
Carter Family Holdings International.
Authorized Director: Danielle Carter.
The signature beneath the appointment looked almost identical to hers.
Almost.
"Who established this company?"" Danielle finally asked.
Margaret adjusted her glasses.
"According to the registration documents, it was incorporated eleven months ago.""
"While I was pregnant?""
"Yes.""
Danielle looked at Daniel Foster.
"Did I sign anything?""
Daniel examined the document.
"No. At least, not anything that would authorize this.""
Margaret opened another folder.
"The company was established using a power of attorney that supposedly originated from your father's estate.""
Danielle frowned.
"My father was dead.""
"Exactly.""
"Then how could he authorize it?""
Margaret looked uncomfortable.
"Someone submitted a document claiming that your father had signed the authorization before his death. However, the date on the signature page is inconsistent with the notarization record.""
Daniel leaned forward.
"Do we have the original?""
Margaret nodded.
"It's being held by the corporate registry.""
"Then we need a forensic examination.""
"Already requested.""
Danielle looked at the company name again.
"Why would Michael put this in my name?""
Margaret folded her hands.
"Because the company was designed to receive assets without immediately attracting attention.""
"That doesn't make sense. If I own it, why would he benefit?""
Daniel answered.
"Because the company could be used to establish a legal separation between the original assets and the person controlling the transactions.""
Danielle slowly understood.
Michael hadn't needed to own the company.
He needed to make it appear that she did.
If investigators discovered questionable transfers, he could claim he was merely acting as an administrator for his wife's company.
If the money disappeared, the legal responsibility could become hers.
She looked at Margaret.
"Was I supposed to become the scapegoat?""
Margaret didn't answer immediately.
Then she nodded.
"That is one possible interpretation.""
Danielle pushed her chair back.
She felt nauseated.
For five years, Michael had told her that she didn't understand his business.
Now she was discovering that he had apparently planned to use her identity as a shield for financial misconduct.
"How much money went through this company?""
Margaret opened a spreadsheet.
"Approximately $4.8 million in incoming transfers. The full amount has not been reconciled.""
Danielle closed her eyes.
Four-point-eight million dollars.
And her name was on the paperwork.
Daniel placed a hand on the table.
"We need to move carefully. If the company was created through fraudulent authorization, we can challenge its formation and seek to freeze the remaining assets.""
"Do it.""
"There's another issue.""
Danielle looked at him.
"Of course there is.""
Daniel turned his laptop toward her.
"The company has a registered director and a registered secretary. The director is you. The secretary is a man named Paul Whitmore.""
Margaret nodded.
"Do you know him?""
Danielle shook her head.
Daniel searched his records.
"He's listed as a corporate services consultant.""
"Does he work for Michael?""
"Not directly. But he has represented several companies associated with Arthur Reed.""
Danielle felt the room grow colder.
"So Arthur is involved?""
Margaret looked toward the locked document case.
"We cannot establish that yet.""
Danielle remembered Arthur's expression at the marina.
His warning.
Michael was never the most dangerous person in this family.
She looked at the digital storage device.
"What's that?""
Margaret hesitated.
"Your father left a recorded statement.""
Danielle stared.
"A video?""
"An audio recording. He instructed us to release it only if the protective provisions were activated.""
Daniel leaned forward.
"Have you listened to it?""
Margaret shook her head.
"Not yet. I thought it would be better to play it with you present.""
She connected the device to her laptop.
A recording appeared.
The date was almost three years earlier.
Danielle recognized the sound of her father's breathing before she recognized his voice.
"Hello, sweetheart.""
Her eyes immediately filled.
"Hello, my darling girl.""
She covered her mouth.
Her father continued.
"If you're listening to this, something has gone wrong. And I suspect Michael has finally done what I feared he would.""
Danielle looked down.
She could almost imagine him sitting across from her, wearing his favorite brown cardigan and holding a cup of black coffee.
"I want you to know that none of this is your fault. You loved someone. You trusted him. Those are not crimes.""
The recording crackled.
"Michael approached me because he believed I could give him access to the investment structure behind Carter Maritime. At first, I refused. Later, when I realized how much he cared about you, I reconsidered.""
Danielle wiped her cheek.
"I gave him a temporary administrative role. I wanted to see whether he could protect something that wasn't his.""
Her father's voice became firmer.
"He failed.""
Margaret looked at Danielle.
The recording continued.
"Three months before my death, I discovered that Michael had been communicating with Arthur Reed. They were discussing a plan to transfer Northbridge assets through a company registered under your name.""
Daniel leaned closer.
"Did he mention a company?""
Her father continued.
"I confronted Michael. He denied everything. He told me that Arthur was trying to manipulate him. I asked him to leave you alone if he couldn't be honest.""
A pause.
Then a sentence Danielle would never forget.
"He promised me he would never hurt you.""
The recording went silent for several seconds.
When her father spoke again, his voice sounded weaker.
"Danielle, if Arthur is involved, be careful. He has always believed that the Hayes family took something from him.""
The recording ended.
Nobody spoke.
Danielle stared at the laptop.
"Why would Arthur believe that?""
Margaret closed the document case.
"That may be explained by the original Northbridge agreement.""
She removed another file.
Inside was a letter dated twenty-two years earlier.
It described a failed investment partnership between William Hayes and Arthur Reed.
Arthur had invested in a shipping development project.
William had discovered that several expenses were fraudulent and refused to release additional funds.
The project collapsed.
Arthur blamed William.
But the documents showed something else.
William had personally absorbed a significant portion of the losses to protect the employees and smaller investors.
Arthur, however, had lost nearly everything.
"He believed your father ruined him," Margaret explained.
Danielle read the final paragraph.
"Did my father ever tell you this?""
"No. He wanted you to know as little as possible about Arthur.""
Daniel closed the folder.
"Which means we need to determine whether Arthur and Michael were working together.""
At that moment, Danielle's phone rang.
An unknown number.
She answered.
"Hello?""
A woman's voice whispered.
"Mrs. Carter?""
"Who is this?""
"My name is Emily. I work in the finance department at Carter Maritime.""
Danielle sat straighter.
"What can I do for you?""
"I know I shouldn't be calling, but I saw something in the system.""
"What?""
"Mr. Carter accessed an archived employee account yesterday.""
"Whose account?""
There was a pause.
"Your father's.""
Danielle looked at Daniel.
"That's impossible. My father died years ago.""
"I know. But someone used his old credentials.""
"What did they access?""
"The original Northbridge agreement. And something else.""
"What?""
Emily's voice became almost inaudible.
"A private document titled Beneficiary Protection Schedule.""
Danielle's heart began pounding.
"Did you read it?""
"No. But I saw that it had been downloaded.""
"By whom?""
"Mr. Carter.""
Danielle looked at the laptop.
Her father's voice still echoed in her mind.
Be careful.
"Emily, listen to me. Don't touch anything else. Don't delete anything. Can you preserve the access logs?""
"I already copied them.""
"Good. Send them to my attorney.""
"There's something else.""
"What?""
Emily took a shaky breath.
"Mr. Carter wasn't alone when he accessed the file.""
Danielle tightened her grip on the phone.
"Who was with him?""
Emily whispered a name.
"Your mother-in-law.""
Danielle went completely still.
Her mother-in-law, Patricia Carter, had always been polite to her.
Cold, sometimes.
Critical, often.
But never openly hostile.
Patricia had attended Olivia's birth.
She had brought flowers, kissed Danielle on the forehead, and told her that Michael would eventually become a wonderful father.
Now Danielle was hearing that Patricia had been inside the company's archive, accessing documents connected to her dead father.
"Are you certain?"" Danielle asked.
"I saw her.""
"Why would she be there?""
"I don't know.""
The call ended.
Danielle slowly lowered the phone.
Daniel noticed her expression.
"What happened?""
She told him.
Margaret exchanged a glance with him.
"That complicates matters.""
Danielle stood.
"I want to speak to Patricia.""
Daniel immediately shook his head.
"Not alone.""
"She has been involved in this from the beginning, hasn't she?""
"We don't know that.""
Danielle looked at the photograph of her father on the office shelf.
For the first time, she wondered whether the secret had been bigger than Michael's ambition.
Maybe the man she married hadn't been the only person who knew about her inheritance.
Maybe the entire Carter family had known.
And maybe someone had been waiting for her father to die.
Her phone vibrated again.
A text message appeared.
It was from Patricia.
Danielle, I know what's happening. We need to talk before tomorrow's hearing.
A second message followed.
Please don't trust Richard Bennett.
Danielle looked at Daniel.
"What's going on?""
He read the messages.
Then his face hardened.
"Mrs. Carter, I think we just discovered why your father was so worried.""
"Why?""
Daniel pointed toward the digital recording.
"Because Richard Bennett may not have been protecting your family.""
May you like
He paused.
"He may have been protecting his own interests.""
