Amused

Chapter 4: My Father's Last Warning

Danielle read the first sentence of her father's letter three times.

Michael Carter did not meet you by accident.

The marina seemed to disappear around her.

The guests, the yachts, the voices, even Michael's furious demands became distant background noise.

She looked down at the familiar handwriting.

Her father had been dead for almost three years.

Yet somehow, his words had reached her at the exact moment she needed them.

"Danielle?"" Richard Bennett asked gently.

"Are you all right?""

She shook her head.

"Did you know what was in this letter?""

"Only that your father left specific instructions. I haven't read its contents.""

Danielle looked at the envelope.

"Why would my father think Michael married me for a reason?""

Richard hesitated.

"Perhaps we should discuss this somewhere private.""

"No.""

Her voice was quiet but firm.

"I've spent five years being told to keep quiet. I'm finished doing that.""

Michael turned sharply.

"What letter?""

Danielle folded the paper.

"Something from my father.""

Michael's eyes moved toward the envelope.

"Give it to me.""

She looked at him.

"Excuse me?""

"I said give it to me. Whatever this is, it concerns my family.""

Richard stepped between them.

"Mr. Carter, I suggest you take several steps backward.""

Michael laughed bitterly.

"You're all acting like I'm some criminal.""

Thomas Reed replied, "That is a question the investigators will determine.""

Michael pointed at Danielle.

"She has been manipulating all of you. She's been planning this.""

Danielle looked at him.

"You think I planned your affair?""

"No. But you knew about the company.""

"I discovered you were stealing from it.""

"I was moving money to protect the business!""

"Then why did you need Vanessa's company?""

Michael's jaw tightened.

"She provided consulting services.""

Vanessa suddenly laughed.

It wasn't a happy laugh.

It was the sound of someone who had just realized that the person beside her might sacrifice her to save himself.

"Stop lying, Michael.""

He turned.

"Vanessa.""

"You told me the payments were approved by Bennett Capital. You told me Danielle had already signed the authorization.""

Michael lowered his voice.

"Not here.""

Vanessa ignored him.

"You said the money was ours. You said we'd be living in Miami by Christmas.""

Michael grabbed his suitcase.

"You're making things worse.""

She pulled her arm away.

"No, Michael. You're making things worse. I'm just finished covering for you.""

Danielle watched them argue.

Then she returned to her father's letter.

My darling Danielle,

I know you may be angry with me for not telling you everything while I was alive. I wanted you to have the freedom to choose your own future without being burdened by my fears.

But there is something I discovered about Michael before your wedding.

Danielle's breath caught.

She continued reading.

Three months before you introduced him to me, Michael approached one of my former business associates. He asked questions about my logistics company, my investments, and the trust I had established for you.

At the time, I believed he was simply ambitious. I was wrong.

Her fingers trembled.

I later discovered that Michael had been involved in a failed investment scheme with a man named Arthur Reed. That man's son was Daniel Reed, the original owner of the consulting company that now operates under Vanessa's name.

Danielle stopped.

Vanessa Reed.

Arthur Reed.

She looked up.

"Richard, do you know a man named Arthur Reed?""

Richard's expression changed.

"Yes.""

"Who is he?""

"An investor. He was involved in several shipping ventures years ago.""

"Was he connected to my father?""

Richard nodded.

"Very closely.""

Danielle looked down again.

The letter continued.

Michael's first approach to me was not about business. It was about you. He wanted to know whether you would inherit control of my investments.

I rejected his business proposal and warned him to stay away from my daughter if his intentions were not genuine.

He smiled and promised me he loved you.

I wanted to believe him.

Danielle pressed her lips together.

A memory surfaced.

Her father standing in the garden on her wedding day.

His hand resting on her shoulder.

"Danielle, marriage is supposed to make your world bigger, sweetheart. Never let a man make you feel smaller.""

She had laughed then.

She thought he was simply being protective.

Now she understood the sadness in his eyes.

"Did he know?"" she whispered.

Richard nodded.

"Your father was one of the most careful businessmen I ever worked with. He rarely trusted anyone without checking their background.""

"Why didn't he tell me?""

"He probably wanted to protect you.""

Danielle continued reading.

If Michael has remained a good husband, then this letter may never need to be opened.

But if he has attempted to use your name, your trust, or your child to gain control of what I left behind, then the trustees must activate the protective provisions.

And Danielle, there is one final thing.

She turned the page.

The next paragraph was underlined.

The company Michael believes he built from nothing has never truly belonged to him.

Danielle stared.

"What does that mean?""

Richard took a slow breath.

"Your father was the original private financier of Carter Maritime.""

Danielle looked up.

"That isn't possible. Michael founded the company.""

"Michael founded the operating company. Your father financed its first expansion through an investment partnership.""

"Why didn't I know?""

"Because the partnership was managed through several holding entities. Your father wanted to remain a silent investor.""

Richard opened his briefcase.

He removed a document showing the original investment structure.

Danielle recognized the date.

Five months before her wedding.

The first major investment into Carter Maritime had come from Hayes Family Investments.

Her father's company.

Richard pointed to a paragraph.

"Your father negotiated a protective agreement. If the founding executive engaged in fraud, concealed related-party transactions, or attempted to misuse protected family assets, the original investors could exercise specific intervention rights.""

Michael heard him.

He abandoned his argument with Vanessa and approached.

"That's old paperwork. It has nothing to do with the current company.""

Richard looked at him.

"Actually, it has everything to do with the current company.""

Michael grabbed the document.

He scanned the first page.

Then the second.

His face tightened.

"Where did you get this?""

"From the original investment records.""

"These provisions were never activated.""

"They are now.""

Michael looked at Danielle.

"You knew about this?""

She shook her head.

"No.""

He laughed.

"Convenient.""

Danielle's voice became colder.

"You keep saying that as though I arranged everything. I didn't know my father had invested in your company. I didn't know you were trying to take control of my trust. And I certainly didn't know you were planning to use my newborn daughter as part of a financial scheme.""

Michael's expression flickered.

Richard looked toward Thomas.

"Please explain the next step.""

Thomas removed another document.

"The trustees have invoked the protective provisions. Your executive voting authority is suspended pending the completion of the investigation.""

Michael stared at him.

"You're removing me?""

"Temporarily, pending the board's formal determination.""

"This is my company!""

Richard replied quietly.

"Your father-in-law helped build it. You should have remembered that before attempting to steal from his family.""

Michael's face turned red.

He looked toward the crowd.

"Everyone here knows what I've done for this company.""

Nobody answered.

Then Danielle noticed something else.

Vanessa had disappeared.

Her red dress was visible near the marina entrance.

She was walking quickly toward the parking lot while talking on her phone.

Danielle watched her.

"Where is she going?""

Michael turned.

"Vanessa!""

She didn't stop.

He started after her.

Thomas stepped into his path.

"Mr. Carter, please remain here.""

Michael shoved his hand away.

"Get out of my way.""

Two security officers approached.

Michael stopped.

Danielle looked down at the final paragraph of her father's letter.

If Vanessa Reed is involved, do not assume she is acting alone.

Her stomach tightened.

She read the sentence again.

Then she looked toward the parking lot.

Vanessa had reached a black SUV.

But before she could open the driver's door, another vehicle pulled in.

A gray sedan.

An elderly man stepped out.

He had silver hair, a walking cane, and a face Danielle recognized from an old photograph in her father's study.

Arthur Reed.

Vanessa stopped.

The older man said something to her.

Her expression changed immediately.

Then he looked directly toward Danielle.

And smiled.

Not warmly.

Not kindly.

It was the smile of someone who had been waiting a very long time.

Richard followed Danielle's gaze.

His face became unusually serious.

"That's Arthur Reed.""

Danielle swallowed.

"Why is he here?""

Richard looked toward Michael.

"Because I suspect he knows your husband better than any of us.""

Arthur began walking toward them.

And the first thing he said was not a greeting.

May you like

It was a warning.

"Danielle, your father was right about one thing. Michael was never the most dangerous person in this family.""
